Ted Turner urges global one-child policy

Posted: Dec 9, 2010

Ted Turner founder of Commie News Network (CNN) and TBS at Cancun global summit wants one-child policy instituted.   What a moron, but he is a progressive/lib after all.

How is it selfish and irresponsible if you - have more than 2 children

[ In Reply To ..]
if you are taking care of you own kids? Why would that be anyone's business? This is coming from a mother of 3 who works at home, taking her children to school everyday, picking them up from school so they don't have to go to daycare or ride a bus. They are involved in about anything they want to be involved in. They have excellent grades. How is this selfish and irresponsible of me? Please remember this is a forum of medical transcriptionists, many of whom have lots of children, hince their reason for choosing an at-home profession.

It is called overpopulation. - sm

[ In Reply To ..]
Overpopulation is a condition where an organism's numbers exceed the carrying capacity of its habitat. The term often refers to the relationship between the human population and its environment, the Earth. Steve Jones, head of the biology department at University College London, has said, "Humans are 10,000 times more common than we should be, according to the rules of the animal kingdom, and we have agriculture to thank for that. Without farming, the world population would probably have reached half a million by now." The world's population has significantly increased in the last 50 years, mainly due to medical advancements and substantial increases in agricultural productivity.

The recent rapid increase in human population over the past two centuries has raised concerns that humans are beginning to overpopulate the Earth, and that the planet may not be able to sustain present or larger numbers of inhabitants. The population has been growing continuously since the end of the Black Death, around the year 1400; at the beginning of the 19th century, it had reached roughly 1,000,000,000 (1 billion). Increases in life expectancy and resource availability during the industrial and green revolutions led to rapid population growth on a worldwide level. By 1960, the world population had reached 3 billion; it doubled to 6 billion over the next four decades. As of 2009, the estimated annual growth rate was 1.10%, down from a peak of 2.2% in 1963, and the world population stood at roughly 6.7 billion. Current projections show a steady decline in the population growth rate, with the population expected to reach between 8 and 10.5 billion between the year 2040 and 2050.

The scientific consensus is that the current population expansion and accompanying increase in usage of resources is linked to threats to the ecosystem. The InterAcademy Panel Statement on Population Growth, which was ratified by 58 member national academies in 1994, called the growth in human numbers "unprecedented", and stated that many environmental problems, such as rising levels of atmospheric carbon dioxide, global warming, and pollution, were aggravated by the population expansion. At the time, the world population stood at 5.5 billion, and optimistic scenarios predicted a peak of 7.8 billion by 2050, a number that current estimates show will be reached around 2030.
The word abstinence comes to mind....is that too... - obvious? If population control...
[ In Reply To ..]
you would preach abstinence. There are certain portions of the "humans" you seek to "modify."

Much like that German fella who sought racial purification? He took the quick method, however. Just round them all up and kill them, don't bother to go through the steps of population control. They can't procreate if they are dead.

Sigh.

It's not just whether or not you can financially afford children - anon

[ In Reply To ..]
It is can the earth survive more people. I'm certainly not questioning whether you can afford your children or if you love them. You sound like a wonderful mother and even though I don't know you, I know you love your children.

I think overall Ted Turner is right. The earth can only sustain so much. The poster above me said it better than I could. There are a lot of factors that come into play. I think if people limited their families to one or two children that should be enough. There is no reason for people to be having tons of kids. I'm not talking about you, I'm thinking of people like Octomom and a lot of families that have a brood.

The planet needs a rest from the infestation of people. If we could cut down on the population then the planet could have a chance to heal.
Here's hoping folks like you don't take the express lane... - like Hitler did.

When you open the door, give away more personal freedom and put that kind of power in any government you expose yourself to whatever the people in government power want to do, however they want to get rid of certain elements, control population, etc. Remember the movie where the way do jour to control population was killing everyone on their 30th birthday? Do you think the average German yelling sieg heil ever thought in their wildest imagination their leaders would commit genocide for ANY reason?

The point here is not to give that kind of power to a government, even though you not so skillfully tried to deviate attention from it.

Basically, she acts like a kid herself, totally irresponsible. The taxpayers pretty much support her and her family. Its ridiculous and not all that uncommon. I think you should have as many kids as you want as long as you take care of them.. the more, the merrier, but if you cannot, at least use birth control after the first one!

And what do you suggest? Mandatory tube tying... - after 2?

That people should carry on and have broods of kids and not give a crap if the planet can sustain them. Sometimes people have to sacrifice for the good of others. So you think its okay for people to have as many children as they want and show they have no regard for the planet?

What do you think happens when resources run out? This planet can only survive with so many people on it. It is irresponsible for people to have more kids than is necessary. People should control themselves. And before you flame me about my beliefs, I am a conservative/independent. But at least I have enough sense to think about the planet and not my selfish wants.

Okay, flame away.
You didn't answer the question - No I don't think we should continue overpopulating
[ In Reply To ..]

but what's the alternative?  It's not something a government can control outside of forcing women to have abortions or outright killing newborns if the parents already have 2 kids.  That's not the kind of world I want to live in, do you?

There are other alternatives - see message
[ In Reply To ..]
I thought I answered the question, but I guess I didn't.

I thought everyone knew what was obvious. If someone wanted to be responsible then there are procedures after your 1st or 2nd child to have your tubes tied or the father a vasectomy. There is no need for barbaric abortions or killing newborns. People need to learn to be responsible. Limiting the brood is the responsible thing to do.
To go back to my original question, - what about when those measures fail?

Tubals and vasectomies have been known to fail or spontaneously grow back, so what happens in that case?

their idea of what the "race" should be in this country...check out these quotes from Margaret Sanger, founder of Planned Parenthood:

"The most merciful thing that a family does to one of its infant members is to kill it."
Margaret Sanger (editor). The Woman Rebel, Volume I, Number 1. Reprinted in Woman and the New Race. New York: Brentanos Publishers, 1922.

"Birth control must lead ultimately to a cleaner race."
Margaret Sanger. Woman, Morality, and Birth Control. New York: New York Publishing Company, 1922. Page 12.

"We should hire three or four colored ministers, preferably with social-service backgrounds, and with engaging personalities. The most successful educational approach to the Negro is through a religious appeal. We don't want the word to go out that we want to exterminate the Negro population. and the minister is the man who can straighten out that idea if it ever occurs to any of their more rebellious members."
Margaret Sanger's December 19, 1939 letter to Dr. Clarence Gamble, 255 Adams Street, Milton, Massachusetts. Original source: Sophia Smith Collection, Smith College, North Hampton, Massachusetts. Also described in Linda Gordon's Woman's Body, Woman's Right: A Social History of Birth Control in America. New York: Grossman Publishers, 1976.

"Eugenic sterilization is an urgent need ... We must prevent multiplication of this bad stock."
Margaret Sanger, April 1933 Birth Control Review.

"Eugenics is ⦠the most adequate and thorough avenue to the solution of racial, political and social problems.
Margaret Sanger. "The Eugenic Value of Birth Control Propaganda." Birth Control Review, October 1921, page 5.

"Birth control itself, often denounced as a violation of natural law, is nothing more or less than the facilitation of the process of weeding out the unfit, of preventing the birth of defectives or of those who will become defectives."
[no source available at this time...]

As an advocate of birth control I wish ... to point out that the unbalance between the birth rate of the 'unfit' and the 'fit,' admittedly the greatest present menace to civilization, can never be rectified by the inauguration of a cradle competition between these two classes. In this matter, the example of the inferior classes, the fertility of the feeble-minded, the mentally defective, the poverty-stricken classes, should not be held up for emulation....
On the contrary, the most urgent problem today is how to limit and discourage the over-fertility of the mentally and physically defective.

"The third group [of society] are those irresponsible and reckless ones having little regard for the consequences of their acts, or whose religious scruples prevent their exercising control over their numbers. Many of this group are diseased, feeble-minded, and are of the pauper element dependent upon the normal and fit members of society for their support. There is no doubt in the minds of all thinking people that the procreation of this group should be stopped."
Margaret Sanger. Speech quoted in Birth Control: What It Is, How It Works, What It Will Do. The Proceedings of the First American Birth Control Conference. Held at the Hotel Plaza, New York City, November 11-12, 1921. Published by the Birth Control Review, Gothic Press, pages 172 and 174.

What it has done is make promiscuity A-OK, and why we now use abortion as a means of birth control. And if you look at the stats, Margaret got what she wanted. Look up the stats on abortion divided by race and income level.

Might have been better if the doors had not been thrown wide open on promiscuity...? Better on SO many levels...young girls' self esteem being one of the first casualties. I think that's very, very sad.

Tom DeLay's reasoning - sm
[ In Reply To ..]
"Speaking in Arlington, Va., at the recent national convention of College Republicans â a 250,000-member organization that promotes GOP policies and candidates â the Texas Republican said: "I contend [abortion] affects you in immigration. If we had those 40 million children that were killed over the last 30 years, we wouldnât need the illegal immigrants to fill the jobs that they are doing today. Think about it.â

Oh lol. So he is suggesting that those - children
[ In Reply To ..]
would be any more able to work for less than minimum wage than the millions of people already here who need jobs? Illegal immigrants are here because it's cheap labor escaping the laws of the United States. Having extra Americans who have no effect on that issue.

How ridiculous to suggest it.
Tom DeLay--GOP House Majority leader - Pretty powerful Republican
[ In Reply To ..]
From my understanding of the context (I recall the video, but I can't find the link), it was that more abortions are in low income, relatively uneducated, working class families, thus ensuring a cheap labor supply. He was speaking to a very "yuppie" group of young Republicans.
That's not unlike Margaret Sanger's - argument
[ In Reply To ..]

That is nothing like Margaret Sanger's argument... - however, a dumb statement
[ In Reply To ..]
on DeLay's part, and even though I think it is goofy rationalization it his his right to say it.

He is no longer house majority leader, and as to being a powerful Republican...what little power he still has does not go past the Texas border, and I doubt he has much there. He is not a national player any longer. For some reason Republicans tend to freeze out their criminals and the Democrats want to censure them and let them keep their office. Not sure why that is. Illegal is illegal...right?

He is making a "class" argument. Maybe you - don't consider
[ In Reply To ..]
that on the same level as a race/class argument, but I do.

It is most definitely not unlike Margaret Sanger's argument.
Sanger was trying to purify the race.... - DeLay said nothing about that.
[ In Reply To ..]
and there is a grain of truth in what he said...illegal immigrants will take any job for any pay. Americans by and large won't. If there were no jobs for illegals it would not pay them to come here. They are not getting the "good" jobs. They are getting the ones Americans don't want to do, for whatever reason.

What DeLay is suffering from is the delusion that those millions who have died through abortion would have taken those low-paying jobs. History shows they would not have. Which still does not diminish the horror that we as a country exterminate millions of babies every year.

You read it one way, I read it another.
That's not correct. They are taking jobs for pay below - minimum wage
[ In Reply To ..]
A reputable employer who follows US hiring laws and minimum wage laws does not hire illegals. Extra Americans would not be able to fulfill this... ahem, "demographic." It's illegal.

He is making a class argument. In essence saying the babies of low income people would be able to fill jobs that illegal immigrants do? How ridiculous.....among other adjectives.

I do not read what he said the way you do..... - and Margaret Sanger's..
[ In Reply To ..]
goal was to prevent that "lower class" FROMN EVER BEING BORN. DeLay's premise was that if we had not aborted those folks, perhaps they would have taken the lower wage jobs that the immigrants are now filling (chicken plants, seasonal farm work, etc.) that American workers don't want to do, thus no job market for illegals. Again...his problem was that he thinks Americans actually want to fill those jobs. They don't. That's a fact. That is where his argument fails. Probably what would happen is we would now have millions more unemployed and the illegals would still be doing the jobs they are currently doing (all how many thousands of them)?

Apparently we have a lot of "nonreputable" employers who are giving jobs to those thousands of illegals because they are here working and more coming over every day. Probably a lot of THEM on unemployment.

The fact remains, as I said, both are making class - arguments
[ In Reply To ..]
And, if those employers offered at least minimum wage, you bet there would be Americans doing the work.

It's a silly old argument that Americans would rather not work than work at a minimum wage job....any minimum wage job. Of course, there are bad apples in every barrell, but the main reason illegals are working here is because below-board people hire them.

He is still real big in the Dem political scene because, as I said, Dems tend to circle the wagons on their own felons and take potshots at the other side. Tom DeLay is no longer a player in national pub politics and he should NOT be. Rangel should have been kicked out of Congress and Clinton should have been prosecuted like you or I would be if we lied under oath.

And then there was that guy with all the money in his freezer. The Dems circled the wagons on him for months.

Nixon, when caught, resigned.

As I said...there are crooks on both sides, but the Republicans are better about cleaning their own house. Dems...not so much. It's a fact. And apparently that is all righty then with you. :)
I don't know....I just find it funny that Nixon's offense is being compared - to Clinton's.
[ In Reply To ..]
And the fact that so many straws are being grasped to try and prove Pubs are somehow better than Democrats.

If anyone wants to claim Republicans clean house better, there had better be a lot more facts and statistics than this post shows.

I sure can't find any to support it. I can; however, find information to show there are about 30% more Republicans than Democrats who committed crimes while in office.

Nixon COVERED UP a felony (break-in)....Clinton - personally COMMITTED...
[ In Reply To ..]
a felony. So, in this case, Clinton WAS worse. Nixon resigned. Clinton did not, so in that case, a Republican did the right thing and a Democrat did not. Rangel should have resigned. He did not.

I would be interested in the percentage of Republicans who committed crimes and stayed in office rather than resign and the number of Democrats who stayed in office rather than resign.

Bottom line, there are crooks on both sides, not saying Republicans are less likely to be crooks than democrats. But it is pretty evident that Republicans when caught resign more often than Democrats and Democrats tend to protect the wrongdoers even after it becomes public...Republicans not so much.

LOL! The nature of the two crimes is not - comparable
[ In Reply To ..]
and Nixon knew he'd better get outta there before he said "I am notta crook" under oath. lol

Saying the pubs "clean house better" is just plain silly.

Give some statistics showing how many pubs committed crimes while in office, how many of those who committed crimes in office left or were removed due to those crimes. Same for democrats.

Republicans clean house better....LOL! Well, they sure have more to clean.

one child policy - sm

[ In Reply To ..]
Wow, some of the posts on here are way out. I think Ted Turner is correct in the fact that if we keep going, we are going to outpopulate the planet and its resources. It is kind of funny, we think it is okay to control the population of animals, but not humans. Nobody is suggesting we slaughter humans or anything like that. I think we just need to control population through birth control. I don't think it has anything to do with race, religion, social status or anything like that, just common sense. Too many people don't give a crap about our planet and, sorry, but when it is used up, we will all cease to exist. Many people think the planet is just here for whatever we want to do with it. It is the source of our existence and when it is all used up, we are gone no matter what race, religion or social status we are.

Everybody is so concerned about the deficit we are leaving our children and our grandchildren, how about leaving the earth in good condition for them!

Look back in history at what opening a door has caused.... - and the "unitended" consequences.

[ In Reply To ..]
the point is, you do not want to relinquish that control to the government. How many more rights are people willing to give away? Seriously? Now you want to give the government control over your womb?

Already the statement "we control the population of animals but not humans" speaks volumes. Ok, perhaps we just start a neuter and spay campaign for humans? Every year all the OBs can get together and do half price. Or maybe if we ever get to the government run option neuter and spay are free and you get a check from Ted for volume.

Opening doors....sometimes once opened they can't be closed, but you really, really wish they could.

[ In Reply To ..]
I guess I need to rephrase my comment. I do believe we need to control our population. I do believe we just need to do it as individuals. We humans need to control our population.

Sorry to indicate that I meant we should have government control over that. I do see how you took it that way.

I just mean we all need to take care of our planet and part of that is not having so many children. Back in the old days, when we worked farms and so forth, we had many children mainly because of lack of birth control and the need for many people to work the farms. This is not the case now and though we love our children, we just need to have less of them in order to sustain a population that our planet can withstand.

Sorry for the misunderstanding.
Ok. Then I believe we agree that if ... - people do believe we need to...

control population, it needs to be done through education, and not through any government intervention. Meaning, in the final analysis, the choice to have more than 2 children rests with the individual and not the government.

[ In Reply To ..]

As stated previously, the earth has a finite amount of resources and habitable space.  For the purposes of illustration, boil this down to its simplest form.  If a person were allotted 2 square feet of earth for themselves and all of their offspring, how long would it take before they overran their allotted space?  How long would it be before members of that family had to stand on top of each other because there was no longer enough room for all their feet to touch ground.  Carry that out a little bit further by including the effects of overcrowding observed in testing on animals .  At what point does reproduction begin to have a significant detrimental effect the family unit as a whole?

While I am not advocating abortion, genocide, racial purification, or government population control, I do believe that the effects of the overpopulation of our planet can already be seen, not just in the dwindling natural resources, but also in the increase in violence in our cities, the increased incidence of mothers and fathers killing their children, the increase of general crimes committed against and/or by children, and even in the decrease of personal interaction between people (the latter being partially attributable to the inability to get personal space making interaction a chore rather than a choice).

As with any right, the right to bear children Winkcomes with its own responsibilities.  In my humble opinion, it is the abdication of personal responsibility that opens the window for government to step in and attempt control of personal freedoms.

Global Warming...or NotMay 10, 2011

Now we have middle-of-the-summer temperatures, and absolutely no rain. I've never thought about 'Global Warming' as defined politically, but I definitely, without a doubt, believe in 'Global Weather Changes' no matter what the caus ...
