Global Warming...or not

I don't know about the rest of you, but the weather we have been having in our state is unusual. It has been for several years, huge ice storms and blizzards when we never had a blizzard before as far as I know, and ice storms were rare. Now we have middle-of-the-summer temperatures, and absolutely no rain.

I've never thought about 'Global Warming' as defined politically, but I definitely, without a doubt, believe in 'Global Weather Changes' no matter what the cause.

I realize I have not been on the earth for a thousand years, but in my lifetime we have experienced something like 9 years out of 10 the warmest summers on record, three blizzards in two weeks where we had not had a blizzard in this area in 20 years, and tornadoes abnormally late and early in the season. We have also had the occasional record winter low temperature. They say much of the changes will be in the "extremes" which I believe is true.

A more immediate concerning sign to me is that insects that do not normally live in this area are moving in and threatening our local vegetation. I am also concerned about a shortage in pollinating insects (bees). While my garden plants are producing flowers, they do not seem to be producing as much fruit.

Global warming is not "defined politically". It is defined scientifically - political hot potato though it may be.

There's a terrific, brief discussion on the radio program "This American Life" in which these notions are discussed. It's well worth listening to.

I believe in the normal cyclic changes. I also believe that we should do everything we can to keep from harming the earth and those who live in it. That's only common sense, not political, not necessarily scientific, not religious. Just common sense.

We should not contaminate the air or the ground, because we depend on them. There are definite changes in the weather recently though, regardless of how or why.

That is part of the cause for the extremes. The other connection is the weather pattern cycles.

We've had winters where it snowed 3 feet in 1 day and snow every other day all winter, dumping 6 inches or more with hot, sizzling summers and/or drought or severe wind storms and thunderstorms. That was a La Nina year.

We had a year of no winter where it was still 60 degrees in December, mild spring and moderate summer temps. That was an El Nino year. (My kind of year).

We've had winters where it never got above 20 degrees during the day and nights of -15 to -20 degrees, summers that never got above 70, and a lot of windstorms and severe thunderstorms. Another La Nina year.

Our "normal" winter is 30 to 40 degrees during the day, snow once in a while, but no blizzards, mild wet spring, and moderate summer temps with light rains usually in the morning.

So, no, don't believe it's global warming. Weather cycles and La Nina causing this awful weather.

I did see a scientific show a few years back where they said the Mississippi River would swell one day and become twice as wide as it was and forever break this country in two. I hope they are wrong but what I'm seeing now makes me wonder.
