that our marxist president is using this crisis to impose a national energy legislation/ tax that will slow private growth and put yet another huge piece of our economy under government control???

that there would be any doubt whatsoever that regulation is in order after having witnessed the big fat "duh" that has issued forth from the private corporate sector in the wake of this environmental catastrophe, illustrating their utter incompetence regarding even a modicum of preparedness for such inevitable disasters when they occur.

is that all the regulations that are already in place failed - regulations set by the government. These rigs were supposed to be inspected and weren't and when they were inspected and given unsatisfactory inspections, nothing happened. This from the government who is now going to "fix" the problem? Why is everyone so mad at the government for not doing anything now? Had the oil companies been forced to have insurance instead of relying on the government to "take care of it" they would have had to shut down as soon as they recieved that unsatisfactory inspection or risk their rates going sky-high. Government cannot regulate everything and it cannot fix everything and this is going to be a sad reminder of that fact for a long time to come.

You really want to go into the whys and wherefores of all that? - Suffice to say that

beefed up enforcement and streamlined, updated, 21st century regulations are in order, and that this time around, federal oil industry legislation and regulation will NOT be delivered to us by oil industry corporate executives.

Safety standards, hazard prevention, environmental protection and disaster response is NOT too much to ask. In fact, I can remember the day when such regulations were in force while working for Shell Oil in the OSHA Compliance Department back in the 70s. It was not perceived as "government takeover." It was simply par-for-the-course and a part of the job description we all took in our stride.

I think we all can see that the fox-guarding-the-hen-house approach has been a dismal failure. What is NOT an option is to allow political agendas to obsficate, impede or obstruct responsible environmental stewardship imperatives. This issue transcends economic and political contexts, considering the fact that there is no religion on the face of the earth that does not charge all human beings with that moral responsibility. For me, it does not matter HOW we get there, just as long as we get there.

your faith in politicians who have shown time and time again that they will take money from anyone willing to donate to their campaign and then they have to return the favor. You can't regulate companies by a government full of politicians who get kick backs and are corrupt. I'm surprised that some of you don't get that.
Not half as suprised as I am - sm

that you seem to put your faith in (oil company) corporate executives who have the politicians beat nine ways to Sunday when it comes to greed and corruption. Consider this. Kick backs are a two-way street, are they not? I mean, they don't occur between politicians or in a vacuum. So within the context of the oil spill, who do you suppose is on the other side of the kick backs you voice such concern over? Ah-hah. Must be the oil industry lobbyists, huh? Whose interests do they represent?

What we have before us is a prime example of what happens when the oil companies are left up to their own devices in the absence an effective regulatory system. The article cited below expresses what I believe to be a feasible approach to address these issues and begin to fashion effective solutions.

To date, the spill estimates range between 66 and 120 million gallons of spillage, or 6-11+ times the magnitude of the Exxon Valdez disaster. Just go take a look at the immediate short-term and ultimate long-term consequences in terms of damage to the environment and ecosystems. Twenty years later, long-term consequences are ongoing and it is predicted that the Arctic shoreline will need at least another 10 years to fully recover. This does not even begin to address the dollars and cents costs. To my mind, the devastation to the wildlife populations alone is beyond comprehension.

What I know is that politicians and oil company executives are parties to both the problems and to the solutions, like it or not. Status quo is not an option.

You want the very people who are in bed with big oil companies to regulate them. LOL! How naive are you? Excuse me Mr. Politician...we will donate to your campaign if you make regulations slack....i.e. current gulf oil spill. Get a clue! There were regulations so obviously that worked great...thanks for pointing that out.

Prediction: Not An October Surprise, But A November Surprise.Sep 09, 2016
My analysis showed Trump ahead by 3 points until the last week and now show 7 points. The "traditional" polling methods are not valid in this election and a lot of people are going to be gobsmacked. I predict that Trump will win the popular vote by at least 9 points and will win the electoral college. (Guess what? The Clinton campaign is starting to think the same.) ...

embarrassed himself once again.  He bragged about supporting a law that would prevent immigrants from re eiving any form of means tested government assistance for a period of five years.  The thing is, that law was passed by President Bill Club and has been in force for over 20 years.  What a boob!  Of course his supporters will continue to make excuses for him no matter what he says or does. I guess that makes them boobs too. ...

Not A Thank You To Be Seen Or Heard But Surprise!Dec 27, 2012
I mailed a family (including some little friends, 2 girls) a huge box of Christmas goodies including all forms of candies, cookies, pretzels, and girlie things for the 8 and 10 year old I knew they liked. The box weighed almost 37 lbs. Know they got, their mother said so and she thanked me. I also sent her some money to buy gifts for her family as they had no gifts for the kids (there are 4 kids in this family). I had bought the little girls some jewelry boxes and necklaces with their names on t ...

Interesting Bit of Legislative History - McCarran Walter Act of 1952 Note: McCarran and Walter were Democrats. This act was created in 1952 and used by Carter in 1979 … Trump was recently severely criticized for suggesting that the U.S. should limit or temporarily suspend the immigration of certain ethnic groups, nationalities, and even people of certain religions (Muslims). The criticisms condemned such a suggestion as, among other things, being “Un-American,” dumb, stupid, reck ...

BIG Surprise In Her Hometown - Kim DavisSep 14, 2015
Anti-gay marriage clerk Kim Davis is about to get a rude awakening in her hometown. Non-profit organization Planting Peace just erected the above billboard in Davis' hometown of Morehead, Kentucky. The message is plain and simple -- if Davis is going to use Biblical rhetoric to justify her opposition to same-sex marriage, she might want to take a closer look at how else marriage has been redefined in relation to the book's sacred teachings.
