In the Washington Post, William Daley, the former Sec'y of Commerce under Clinton and campaign chairman for Gore, warns Democrats of the very real potential for a political meltdown on the horizon, citing numerous pieces of tangible evidence that the American people do not support the current administration's liberal agenda - ranging from the devastating poll numbers to the defeats suffered in recent gubernatorial elections to the defection and planned retirement of current Democrat legislators (with more likely in the future).
He then tries to give hope to the party if only it will move to the center, at least for the time being, but encouraging the loony left members of the party to continue to try to "nudge" the country toward their brand of socialism (which he delicately phrases as "persuading fellow Americans to see things from their perspective" -referring to the loons).
Daley clearly believes that there is no chance now to avoid losses in 2010, but thinks that changing the message to one that is more centrist can avoid an utter debacle.
Daley, I believe, is much too optimistic, and gravely underestimates the long memory and deep resentment of the American voter when he has been played for a fool. Obama's campaign posture was nothing if not much more centrist than he is or ever has been, and millions of Americans who drank his Kool-Aid will never forget that it turned out to contain poison.
During 2009, Obama and his loony associates tore off their masks and revealed themselves for what they truly are...and the American voter will not trust them again no matter how sweetly they try to sing the song of centrism and bipartisanship.
The ONLY hope for the Democrats in 2012 (because there is no hope for them in 2010) is if they take the highly unusual step of refusing to nominate Obama for a second term (they could use his sheer ineptitude for a reason if they're reluctant to blatantly repudiate his socialist philosophy and risk alienating the loonies completely), AND if they refuse to retain Pelosi and Reid in their leadership positions.
Since the chance of them doing any of these things to rid themselves of the taint of the political frauds that these three have perpetrated on the voters, a fraud that the voters will not soon forget OR forgive...we may start to put our money on a sea change in 2012 that might be even bigger than the one that is coming in 2010.

Just for future reference, here's some past history from CNN. Carter and Bush Sr. finished well above 50% approval after their first year, but neither could get reelected. Reagan and Clinton finished below 50% and both won reelection.
At this point in time, approval ratings don't mean much.
Where is the support going? You might hope the moderates are going in some other direction, but it won't be supporting conservative views. The conservatives have driven out moderates in droves. The Scozzafava election comes to mind. (Even Rasmussen says republicans aren't gaining popularity.) Obama isn't in danger of losing his job.

to keep screwing up. Give him time and, even those who put him in office will have to face reality, whether they want to or not. We all had HOPE for CHANGE but not from BAD to DISASTROUS. ;-)
