Democratic debate showed civility.

Posted: Oct 14, 2015

I keep wishing the US would get back to civility without the bullying.  It was nice to see the Democrats discuss the issues without the insulting and bad language  that is the norm for the Republicans.

Nice NOT to see Trump whining about moderator being unfair and  insulting everyone and quoting polls.

;

It was staged, they knew the questions in advance. They all have one common enemy, - Republicans, not Iran, Russia, or ISIS.

[ In Reply To ..]
It's conservatives/Republicans.

Their "true believers" never fact check anything. - Bernie overstates the wealth of the rich,

[ In Reply To ..]
the hallmark of his campaign (envy), and Hillary is a mix of fact and fiction.

Excerpt from link...

SANDERS: "Make every public college and university in this country tuition-free."

CLINTON: "My plan would enable anyone to go to a public college or university tuition-free. You would not have to borrow money for tuition."

THE FACTS: Free for the students, but someone has to pay.

Clinton and Sanders both would shift more college costs onto taxpayers and away from parents and students.

Sanders' plan would cover tuition and fees at public universities — a $70 billion annual expense with the federal government picking up two-thirds of that tab by taxing trading in the financial markets.

Students would still be on the hook for room and board costs that average $9,804, according to the College Board.

The Clinton plan is bound to cost more than the $35 billion per year over 10 years projected by her campaign. This is because more students would probably switch to public universities on the potential to graduate without debt, raising costs for the government and potentially leaving many modestly endowed private institutions in the lurch.

The potential of a debt-free education would also depend on states providing reliable money streams and controlling costs — both major sources of uncertainty. But the Clinton plan would also expose a sharp generational divide. New college students would be helped, but the 40 million Americans who already owe a combined $1.2 trillion in education debt would receive little aid other than refinancing at lower rates.

Neither candidate told TV viewers about the costs to the treasury of what they propose.

---

SANDERS: "What we need to do is ... raise the minimum wage to $15 an hour."

THE FACTS: That might boost pay for many workers, but as with college tuition, there's a cost: His plan would probably cause many low-wage employers to outsource or automate some jobs.

Economists have long debated the impact of raising the minimum wage, and some recent research has found that modest increases don't actually cost many jobs. But a jump to $15 an hour would be more than double the federal minimum of $7.25. It would also be far above the minimum wage's previous peak of just under $11, adjusted for inflation, in 1968.

And a $15 minimum wage is above the median wage in eight states, which suggests a boost to $15 could cause widespread job losses in those states.

---

CLINTON on her Syria strategy as secretary of state: "What I said was we had to put together a coalition ... and yes, it included Arabs, people in the region, because what I worry about is what will happen with ISIS gaining more territory, having more reach, and frankly posing a threat to our friends and neighbors in the region and far beyond."

THE FACTS: Clinton is ignoring much of the context of her coalition-building effort in Syria: It was designed to push Syrian President Bashar Assad from power, not target the Islamic State or other extremist groups fighting among the opposition.

As secretary, Clinton helped spearhead meetings of the U.S. and various Arab and European countries frustrated by the escalating conflict in Syria. The coalition was concerned primarily with helping armed opposition groups better defend themselves and directing political groups to coalesce behind a common, inclusive platform for a post-Assad Syria.

At that time, the Islamic State didn't exist. But al-Qaida and other terrorist groups did. And even as they gained a foothold and became increasingly prominent among the anti-Assad rebels, the coalition Clinton worked on didn't come up with a military plan for combating them.

Hmm, I think this fact checker needs fact checking. - sm

You are underestimating Bernie's true believers. I cannot speak for Hillary's. We are pretty much very educated and politically savvy. Bernie Sanders stands for no bulls**t. You can take that to the bank. Even many republicans are starting to see and appreciate that when given the choice of anyone in the republican field. A few points:

SANDERS: "Make every public college and university in this country tuition-free."

Fully paid for (with money left over) by a very tiny tax on speculative Wall Street trades, mostly by hedge fund managers. No federal tax money involved.

SANDERS: "What we need to do is ... raise the minimum wage to $15 an hour."

No one is saying to immediately raise the minimum wage to $15 an hour from $7.25. This would take place gradually over five years, 2015-2020. After that, Bernie recommends tying the minimum wage to the cost of living. When people live in poverty our tax dollars need to be used to give them help. Give them a wage that lifts them out of poverty and we can shift the responsibility away from the government and onto the employer.

It's time we stopped calling them Democrats. They are openly - socialists now. I would say

[ In Reply To ..]
communist, but that has lost its sting with this generation. They have no idea what it means.

The new name, Democratic Socialists of America. Same stuff, different name.

What is democratic socialism? sm - Bernie Sanders

[ In Reply To ..]
Democratic = By the people
Socialism = For the people

A government by the PEOPLE, for the PEOPLE, not a government by Wall Street and bought by the mega-billionaires with their lobbyists that bribe Congress.

In other words, not a republic, not Constitutional. - NM

The problem with dependency, you have no incentive to - improve. You are permanently in the
[ In Reply To ..]
same cycle. There's a difference between income and wealth.

Our Constitution provides for the establishment...sm - Bernie Sanders
[ In Reply To ..]
of a government of the people, by the people and FOR the people. Exactly what I am advocating, a government that is NOT for sale.
Half of the people don't want a socialist. By the people is - by voted, for the people are representatives,
[ In Reply To ..]
of the people is the Constitution.
Taking from one group and giving to another is not - constitutional, but since that
[ In Reply To ..]
doesn't matter anymore anything goes.
Wait a minute, we are taking from one group - and giving to another already
[ In Reply To ..]
Right now, ever since Reagan started with his trickle down nonsense.

Except it is the reverse of what it should be.

This country is subsidizing oil companies, millionaires, and international corporations (such as our beloved Medical Transcription SERVICE organizations) to the tune of millions in the form of tax breaks, no penalty and actually encouragement for offshoring, looking the other way when they commit environmental infringements, allowing wage theft, etc.

I wish it were in the constitution not to allow the 1% to steal everything from the lowest paid, but too late.

Just because we lower income earners live better than 99% of people in the world is not something that should be crowed by Republican politicians - you know they have no intention of living any less than they are, so why should we? We all know it's bad enough now, how they have been allowed to pick at our wages and benefits as much as possible to enrich themselves.

The strong middle class and ability to succeed despite origins is what made this country strong and why we all want to live here, so why are Republicans saying, well, at least you don't have it as bad as other countries...

What's with that anyway, and why would anyone think that's a good argument except those who are wealthy and want to poke down the lower income earners even more? And why would lower income earners buy that, it doesn't make any sense.

They are asking you to sacrifice, but not themselves, and the "job creaters" are not creating jobs anymore, they are cutting jobs and creating tax havens only.
Nope, trickle down just meant someone creates a job and hires - employees, therefore it "trickles down"
[ In Reply To ..]
to the employees. In other words, the employee would not have a job in the first place.

The redefining of words is silly.
So you actually think trickle down worked? - because it did not
[ In Reply To ..]
Trickle down USED to mean maybe they would spread the wealth, kind of, if they were allowed to keep more of their money, BUT it hasn't been that way for a long long while. They take their tax breaks as "job creators" now and find ways to cut staff and put their money somewhere so they can pay even less tax or none at all.

It's not surprising that today's Republican candidates will NEVER bring up "trickle down" because they know it's poison in that nothing has really ever trickled down at all, it has all trickled up instead.
Gvt regulation is one reason. - NM

That was half the people in the country want. "democratic socialism" - "national socialism" "communism&quo
[ In Reply To ..]
it's all redistribution of wealth. Most communist countries have "Republic of..." in front of their names, which is laughable.

Yes, Lincoln did mention it in the Gettysburg Address.... - sm

and he was referring to our Constitution and our government of the people, by the people and for the people, that it may not perish from the earth.
What does that really mean when... - sm
[ In Reply To ..]
the Supreme Court says corporations are people? We are definitely broken!
The Constitution also mentions life, liberty and the PURSUIT of - happiness, and securing the blessings
[ In Reply To ..]
of liberty to ourselves and our posterity, which is pretty much gone with illegal immigration and the high taxes necessary to sustain a centrally managed economy. So much for my pursuit of happiness and money for my posterity. It will be redistributed.
Didn't I read "promote the general welfare" somewhere? - VTMT
[ In Reply To ..]
.
The general welfare clause is mentioned twice. It means - protecting us from foreign aggressors
[ In Reply To ..]
and protecting individuals from criminals.

Writing about the “general welfare” clause in 1791, Thomas Jefferson saw the danger of misinterpreting the Constitution. The danger in the hands of Senators and Congressmen was “that of instituting a Congress with power to do whatever would be for the good of the United States; and, as they would be the sole judges of the good or evil, it would be also a power to do whatever evil they please.” Unlike public officials during Jefferson’s time, our modern-day legislators have a very loose interpretation of the Constitution. The result is that government has mushroomed into a monolithic bureaucracy.

Once the government opens its arms (and bank accounts), it divides the citizens into two groups: those who receive direct (personal, individual) benefit from the government, and those who do not. That is why the founders designed a FEDERAL system of government that provided only for the “GENERAL” (meaning- non-specific) WELFARE of the people by confining its services to things like “national defense” and “interstate commerce”. It leaves to the states the issues of HOW or WHEN other services are provided to specific sub-groups. HOWEVER (This is critical) the new government must represent the BEST INTERESTS of all the people, which logically means that it MUST be limited in scope, for the MORE a government undertakes, the more oppressive it becomes. Government MUST be ANCHORED in fundamental principles (see lecture notes).

If you advocate for federal spending on social welfare programs, you are describing a redistribution of income (MY income) for the benefit of Specific individual citizens INSTEAD of (for example) a strong national defense. Which of those activities is the government LEGALLY REQUIRED to perform? (hint: Art. I, Sec. 8, U.S. Constitution.)
OMG! Art you serious? - nm

The Democratic debate was so refreshing and intelligent - They talked about issues for a change

[ In Reply To ..]
Compared to the fun, but not really intelligent debates the Republicans have had, this was a refreshing change. I almost didn't watch it because everyone knew it would be boring. Everyone knew they wouldn't call each other names or otherwise act like children, and they didn't, and yet they talked about substantial issues, which is really what I want in a President of the United States of America.
