To rile you up further: No one from the Obama administration showed

Posted: Apr 18, 2013

up at Margaret Thatcher's funeral.  Why? She was one of our staunchest ally's yet the  Obama adminstration didn't send one person to her funeral.

I find that a slap in the face to our closest ally, disgusting and ignorant besides....and don't make excuses by stating the marathon bombing kept it from happening. She died before the bombing. It wasn't like Obama had to be there but he could have sent SOMEONE like he did to represent the U.S. at other official's funerals.

You won't find any story about it on MSM about it nor will you find MSM chastising the administration.

The news that the Obama administration will sit out Mrs. Thatcher’s funeral, sending from the current crop only the charge d’affaires from the U.S. embassy in London, is disappointing. It seems that a seminal figure in Western history will be allocated the same level of functionary that was sent to mourn Hugo Chávez.

This is peculiar in and of itself, but especially so when one considers that senior officals have been readily dispatched by the administration for funerals past. The prime minister of Ethiopia was judged sufficiently important to deserve Susan Rice’s attendance, among others....

Thatcher hasn't served in 13 years. But if - England is butt-hurt,

[ In Reply To ..]
it's only half of England. The other half were busy celebrating.

Ding Dong, The Witch is Dead hit the music charts after she died. I'm not condoning that, but she was very...polarizing.

And again, she hasn't been in office for over a decade.

Adding--I just read he is sending the Secretaries of State from when Thatcher was in office. That seems appropriate to me.

Oh, please. Former SOSs George Schultz, James Baker, - British Ambassador Louis Susman, and

[ In Reply To ..]
acting Ambassador Barbara Stephenson don't count?

I guess there are a few posters here who are always in the mood to get riled up and others who are more than eager to accommodate them. I'm not one of them, particularly in the raw aftermath of the Boston bombings, confirmed poison letters sent by some sick conspiracist to leaders on both sides of the aisle, and the unfolding horrific West, Texas explosion. It's been a rough week for the country, one that I prefer to navigate with a more spiritual, not angry, mindset. Thanks, but no thanks.

Well, the intent is obvious "To Rile You Up Further." - sm

[ In Reply To ..]
That seems to be the intent on most of this OP's posts. Even if a valid point is ever brought, it's accompanied by jab at the left which makes me believe a back and forth intelligent discussion is not ever what she/he is looking for. The moniker on its face is confrontational.

Could not agree with you more. - nm

I used to be nice and try to have intelligent conversations - Truthhurts

[ In Reply To ..]
with posters here but I have been dragged down to their level. Rarely have any poster with a different opinion from mine tried to have a serious debate, just jabs and insults, so...back at 'cha now. Maybe if I'm on your level, you'll understand and WANT to have debates.

Sure, there have been maybe one or two regulars on here that kept their sanity and tried, but it always eroded into nastiness by the rest.

Have a nice day.
I'm sorry - sm
[ In Reply To ..]
I don't think I could make a choice to be dragged down.

If there's a situation that makes me feel like I need to be defensive or vindictive without cause or provocation, rather than letting it cause me to sink to a low level, if making a choice is an option, I find something else to do that makes me happy. Life is too short to choose to be miserable.

AMEN to that!!! - nm

and the plot thickens - pondering

The first thing that came to my mind about the fertilizer plant was if Monsanto was skulking between the raindrops somewhere. . .

http://blogs.wsj.com/corporate-intelligence/2013/04/18/before-the-blast-west-fertilizers-monsanto-lawsuit/

Oh my! It certainly does. Another political economic factor - of no small consequence

[ In Reply To ..]

Crazy Texas zoning laws that allowed West Fertilizer to be located smack dab adjacent to residential neighborhoods and schools.  This despite the immensely wide open spaces in the surrounding area.  Makes no sense.  The map here says it all and the article is right on.

http://www.emptywheel.net/2013/04/18/john-galt-kills-texans-in-massive-fertilizer-plant-explosion/

This one has some pretty interesting stuff besides the no OSHA inspection of West Fertilizer since 1985 eye-opener.

http://theweek.com/article/index/243005/could-the-west-fertilizer-explosion-have-been-prevented

Thanks for posting this.  I'm gonna take a gander at the Texas Tribune  and (Jim) Hightower Lowdown archives.  If anyone can shed some light on the shenanigans that go on in the shadowy world of disappearing Texas class action lawsuits, it would be those folks.

Then of course, there's the recent relevation that Texas GOP Senator Jim Blunt was the Mr. Anonymous behind the Monsanto Protection Act.  His mentor was disgraced former House Majority Leader and convicted felon Tom DeLay R-Tx...the undisputed Texas Two-Step champ when it comes to evading the law down here in the Lone Star.

It was said that the town grew up near the plant - Truthhurts
[ In Reply To ..]
not the other way around.

The former cotton-farming community has come through hard times before, but nothing like this, residents said. The community drew Czech immigrants, who kept their heritage alive through the generations with an annual festival and a bakery that specializes in traditional pastries. On Thursday, the Czech ambassador to the U.S. was on his way to West to offer support.

For decades, the fertilizer plant in West has been a local fixture. As the town grew, homes and schools were built in closer proximity. A park is right across the street.

With sane zoning laws based on - the preservation of
[ In Reply To ..]
and integrity of residential interests over those of business, and the separation of potentially hazardous conditions from homes, apartments, schools and public gathering places like parks and such, the outcome in terms of deaths, injuries, damage and long-term economic impact would have been much, much different. Many places in Texas, including the huge Greater H-town metropolis, do not place residential interests over those of commerce and business. Industrial, commercial and residential facilities are routinely thrown together in this zoneless no-man's land. That would include the oil refinery and chemical plant installations.

That's the whole point of posting that particular observation about senseless Texas zoning laws. Thanks for helping support that premise.

If I was president - Fanatical Hypocrite

I would have pretended not to notice too. I wouldn't want people to confuse paying last respects with support of her regime. Luckily, every British person I know hates her too, so they'll be fine with it.

Besides England and America are best friends with benefits, no social faux pa is going to change that. We're both collapsing empires with huge national debts who still think they control the world, we're both filled with aging white people terrified of growing minority populations, and we all hate the French:)

Until England strikes oil, finds a new source of cheap labor or renames itself Israel, they should consider themselves lucky if they still get a Christmas card.

Just noticed the response - Fanatical Hypocrite

[ In Reply To ..]
One of those weeks/months where life comes barreling at you like a freight train non-stop and I've had so little time for fun.

While celebrating the death of people who disagree with us is an ancient human tradition, I did not wish Thatcher ill or dead. In fact, I hope that after her political career she had a quiet and pleasant life and I hope she went surrounded by good friends and pleasant family. The only thing I wished for her is to stay out of politics. I know a lot of people were celebrating her death and while they are free to do so, I see no point.

I found George W. Bush to be one of the worst presidents in history and destructive to our society, but I felt even booing him as he left office was a bit over the top. Maybe it was just those sad puppy dog eyes. He clearly knew he was hated. I was more in the mood for celebrating Obama and another fresh chance for executive grade disappointment.

Maybe I'm strange, but I see funerals as a personal affair. If I die, I don't want the people who didn't like me to come. I see no point in going to a funeral for someone I didn't like, especially when people knew I didn't like them. Their family is there and there I am in the corner trying to be polite, but clearly making everyone uncomfortable.

Now, if she had been in office when she died and it was a national tragedy, of course that would be a different situation. But she was out of office a long, long time. 60 years from now (hopefully) when Obama dies, will you be attending his funeral to pay respects to the former president of the United States and truthfully honor his memory? Or do you think that would be inappropriate considering the general tone of your remarks about him?

Of course, my personal feelings not withstanding, America did have a presence at the funeral as others mentioned, so it's a non-issue.

Thatcher led an interesting life and accomplished a lot. I disagree with what she did and how she did it to varying extents, but that doesn't mean she shouldn't be mourned. It does mean that I should leave that mourning up to the people who cared about her because it's none of my business.

Only thing I liked about her--woman leader - thats all
