Trying to decide whether to take my son to the ER.

Posted: Oct 28, 2009

My 17yo son has been feverish for three days.  He has mostly ran a fever in the early morning and late afternoon, evening hours.  However, when he takes ibuprofen or Tylenol, the fever breaks and he feels fine.  However, this evening he spiked a fever to 102.  He took four 200 mg ibuprofen and the fever came down to 99.4.  But within an hour, it shot back up to 101.7.  He took more ibuprofen (without my knowledge!) and his fever his still hovering at 101.2.  He is also having shaking chills and has his winter coat on and is lying under a sheat, comforter, and an electric blanket and still shaking.

I am about 90% sure it is the flu as his best friend and his girlfriend have been sick and the girlfriend has had a confirmed positive nasal swab for influenza (not sure if that was H1N1 or just seasonal flu).

We've all had flu before and have gotten through without Tamiflu or going to the doctor.  I figure flu is flu and there's really not much you can do about it, but suffer through.  Also to be honest I'm broke and can't afford the copay for an office visit and figured if he got sick enough, we would go to the ER at the hospital I work for.

With this year's H1N1 and all the scary stories and deaths, I'm concerned especially since my son had childhood asthma that has been quiescent most of the time until he catches a cold or gets sick and then it's not uncommon for him to have an asthma attack.  He's not really having much of a cough right now and he says he's breathing fine and his chest doesn't hurt or feel heavy, but then he's a 17yo tough guy, ya know?

So should I call in sick for the rest of shift and take my son to the ER or should I nurse him myself?

Yes, I would take him right away. The H1N1 is a very scarey thing. I wouldn't waste any time getting him to the ER.

I hope your son is feeling better soon. Where I live, we've been told that if you have symptoms of the flu do not go to your doctor's office, but directly to the ER so that's definitely a good idea, especially with him having asthma. My daughter had the same symptoms this weekend, but was better by the third day, thank God.

My sister (in her 40s) got swine flu, has every - symptom listed. After 3 days, she -sm

went to her doctor's office, but I think she should've gone to ER, because the virus went straight to her lungs. (She's a heatlhy person with no asthma or other lung issues). It was too late for Tamiflu to be of much use, but what helped her the most was an Albuterol inhaler, which made it possible for her to breathe more easily.

yes, take him - truffle

My daughter had what seemed like the flu and we took care of her at home, but she has no history of respiratory problems and although her fever was persistent even on Advil, she wasn't as miserable as your son sounds. I would take him because of his history of asthma. That could cause a dangerous complication.

they might not give him the Tamiflu - having it for 3 days

I think the cut off for that is 3 days because the virus has already attacked the body and the white blood cells are responding to it. I suffered through the flu for 2 weeks because I didn't have insurance. If he has insurance take him! I mean then they can just test to be sure and if it is H1N1 then you have to notify his school and keep him out for about a week or more. It just depends on the school. I would ask him and see if he wants to go to the ER. If not then keep giving him the alternating acetaminophen and ibuprofen and do that for a little while even after the fever goes down. My son gets these fevers like that for days with seizures and it is never fun to see them suffer!!! Hope he gets better soon!

I have a 17 year old son too and he was sick - beenthere

like that for days, fever, weak,(he was coughing though) and just wanting to lay in bed. After about a week, I took him to the doctor, and he did have the swine flu, (H1N1) plus bronchitis and an ear infection. I felt so bad that I waited to take him in and that he had to suffer for that many days. But like you said, he is a teenager and just wanted to be left alone and sleep saying I'll be all right. The doctor gave him Tamiflu, Z-Pak, and he was told to take Mucinex. He felt better after about 3 days but had to stay out of school for a week with documentation from the doctor's office. I would take your son in. You don't want to regret it later if it is something worse. Sometimes you just can't put a price on taking care of your kids and their health.

Update: I did take my son to the ER last night. - Definitely H1N1

I was driving myself worrying about it. They did a nasal swab and he has H1N1. They gave me an Rx for Tamiflu, but said it's probably too late for him to start taking it because he's been sick since Monday. I also refilled his inhalers.

They said it was good I took him because he is considered to be in the high risk category because of his history of asthma, but his lungs were fine. So basically treat the fever with ibuprofen and Tylenol, use the inhaler if he feels he needs to, and plenty of fluids and rest.

He actually seems better today. He took some ibuprofen this morning, but hasn't taken anything all day since and has not spiked a fever yet. So I'm hopeful we are on the back end of it.

Now I just have to worry about myself and my daughter getting sick. So far so good.

Debates Obviously Do Not Decide Elections.Oct 12, 2012
I have not been happy with O's performance the last 4 years.  However, I am not sure he is totally to blame for the state of our economy, debt, and job situation.  The R fully admit that what was dumped in his lap was tremendous.  Much of the debt technically does not even belong to O.  The rest, I believe he had no choice, as we were actually looking at a depression.  As Clinton stated, NO president, R or D, could fix these problems in 4 years. Even though I just ...

Looking At Straight Talk Cell Phones And Can't Decide Which One Would Be Best.Nov 13, 2014
My first instinct is to go for the cheapest and on the straight talk website they have a free Samsung T528G when you purchase a plan.  I have a cheapy prepaid phone now that I hate!  It is supposedly touchscreen, but I cannot get it calibrated right and half the time I have no service which I don't know is the phone or the cell service. I also see Samsung Centura or Discover for $50 to $70.  So what would you guys suggest I get? ...
