favorite restaurant freebies

Posted: Aug 30, 2010

The question below sparked my new poll:

What's your favorite restaurant freebie?

Mine is definitely Red Lobster's cheddar bay biscuits.  Texas Roadhouse sweet rolls definitely takes a strong second.

There are 150 calories in each of those cheddar biscuits and 227 in the Texas Roadhouse sweet rolls.

When I was much younger it didn't matter, but coming up on 40 now and it has become important to me to count calories, to read lables, find out what is in the food I am eating to maintain a good weight and to remain healthy.

I used to love Grandy's Chicken sweet rolls (351 calories) and would eat 2 if given the chance... Sometimes I miss those days...

I never realized how many bad calories there are in some fast foods that are presented in commercials to use to be so appealing!

Gotta agree - Old part-timer

I love the Cheddar Bay biscuits. At Red Lobster, once I have my Caesar salad and cheddar bays, I've had enough and am ready to leave.

(Don't know about anyone else, but one of my great annoyances are people who immediately post the calorie count in regard to any food question!)

I think the calorie count is a good thing for people to see... - sm

most of the food at these substandard chain restaurants is crap, full of fat and hardly worth eating. I'm always amused when people think The Olive Garden is real Italian food, Red Lobster is great seafood or the run of the mill Applebees, Chili's, etc is worth eating at.

I totally agree! Olive Garden, Red Lobster and the others you mentioned are HORRIBLE foods!

I lived in Pensacola FL for a bit and then Port Aransas, TX. Now THEY have sea food! My favorite little local eatery was a place right on the docks. The shrimp and fishing boats would unload their catch right beside the restaurant. I saw sacks of potatos and fresh veggies stacked up, no frozen fries here! They also used fresh fruits in their delicous drinks.

as far as Italian, well nothing can compare to hubby's family! They are from Italy and mama is the cook! Always fresh, homemade!

I agree also, that most little local eats are better than these chain places.

I don't think the calorie counter said anything negative, just posted calories for goodness sakes. I appreciate the information. and, they did say that they used to love the grandy's rolls... (I love the pecan pie)

I personally don't like any of those chain resturants. I prefer local places that cook fresher, healthier foods myself. We have a little tiny place in my hometown that serves up the freshest bread and home churnned butters and jams. delish! I bet they blow the red lobster biscuit out of the water!

on a PERSONAL note: I dislike posters who immediately get offended and defensive and provoke argument... just saying.

Just sayin.... - Old part-timer

I didn't really say anything derogatory about the calorie police, just mentioned how they feel compelled to weigh in (ha! Funny choice of phrase!) about any posting about food.

A while back there was someone on here looking for a recipe for hashbrown casserole and the calorie police jumped down their throat immediately!

I'm pretty sure we all know we should live on fresh fruit and veggies, but we all know that really isn't gonna happen.

Who To Contact In Mgt In Restaurant DisputeNov 11, 2012
I had dinner last month at a popular restaurant chain and ordered (ok, so it was breakfast that evening) country ham and 2 pancakes. When I got the ham it looked to be the size of a child's serving. I called the manager over and said I eat there quite frequently and usually served a full serving of ham. He replied maybe the server thought I wanted the half serving?? I ordered country ham, nothing more, nothing less and there is no half serving listed. The manager took my ticket (origin ...

Trump Supporter Says Mexican Restaurant Refused ToJul 05, 2016
An Orange County woman claims she was tossed from a Mexican restaurant Sunday, not for too much tequila — but for too much Trump. Esther Levy, 61, of Warwick, said an employee at the popular Cancun Inn eatery in Sugar Loaf chucked her out for wearing a “Make America Great Again” hat and a Trump button. Levy said she was booted for her support for the presidential candidate who wants to curtail illegal immigration and build a wall on the Mexican border. Joined by retired local j ...

Local Fast Food Restaurant Paying $15.00. Success StoryOct 30, 2014
There has been a lot of discussion on this board about raising the minimum wage to $15.00 and I have been very vocal about being in favor of this. I have listened to how the prices of everything will go up, they do anyway. Think of gas prices. Just mention the word hurricane or bad weather and even before a hurricane forms they are raising the prices of gas. Just talk about cold weather hitting Florida and orange juice goes through the roof. So they will raise prices regardless. But my main reas ...

Least Favorite Christmas Music?Dec 02, 2011
I have to admit I can't stand the "Christmas Shoes" song.  I have a high tolerance for schmalz, but that's over the top for me.  I change the radio station when that comes on.    I'm sorta on the fence about "I Want a Hippopotamus for Christmas".  It's kind of cute, but it has the disadvantage of sticking in my head and I end up singing it the rest of the day! Anyone else? ...
