anyone enjoy watching the live bird cams?

Posted: Mar 28, 2012

Just curious to know if there are others here who enjoy watching bird cams like the Decorah eagle cam, Harrisburg falcons, et. al.   : )

Yes! For 2 years I watched a bald eagle cam - sm - Meerkat

that was set up out on Catalina Island. Watched those magnificent raptors build their nests, the eggs appear over a couple of mornings, and then they took turns sitting on them. Loved the little fuzzy chicks, and what big birds they grew into so quickly, and their first flights. It was totally addicting!

Just you and me, Meerkat? - sm

I think the live bird cam is the best use of the internet! The Decorah eagle cam has become quite popular, as has the Harrisburg falcon site. I enjoy watching the raptors nest and raise their young. It's so fascinating.

I used to watch the Duke Farms eagle cam - mthead

but they had a lot of storm damage last year and didn't get the camera repaired so they no longer have live feeds; all we're getting is occasional updates on the progress in the nests. When I retire, I'm going to be a birder :-)

you don't have to wait till you retire! - start today, you'll get hooked : )

bird cams on the web; I'll have to check them out. I didn't get interested in birds until we moved to New Jersey; there are hawks and owls everywhere - it just amazes me.
New Jersey is the best for birds - sm

Because of New Jersey's unique north-south orientation, it is an absolutely fabulous place for birders. Cape May is actually considered a migration mainline, and we are now members of the Cape May Bird Observatory.

During fall migration, raptors pass directly over Cape May, literally in the thousands. It is absolutely mindblowing! You can visit the hawk watch area at the Cape May lighthouse and view hundreds of raptors pass overhead, while hanging out with a bunch of like-minded birders!

It is really thrilling if you enjoy hawks! I hope you have a chance to go!
I didn't know that. We've been here 6 yrs - mthead

now and get to the beach a few times a year even though it isn't far from us. Cape May is a bit farther, and we've been meaning to go but never make the time. We will now, though! I like the beach better in the fall anyway :-) I need new field glasses/binocs - ours are old and heavy. Do you have any recommendations along those lines? TIA!
oh lovely!! - bird nerd

Oh, I hope you go! We had been wanting to visit Cape May for years, and finally made it a few years ago. We actually go there for a week for our big, once-a-year vacation. We've been in the spring and the fall, but we really love the fall for the raptor migration.

I like the Nikon Monarch binocular. They get good ratings, the optics are great, they are lightweight, and they don't cost a total fortune. Before these, I had an inexpensive pair of Nikon binoculars that I loved, and I still use.

Usually about once a year, some of the birding magazines do a "review", and these can be helpful.
PS: Went to the observatory website - mthead

Thanks so much for mentioning it. I did see some recommendations for binocs, too!
oh that's great! - p.s...

It's a cool website, and they do have good info on binocs!

The director of the observatory, Pete Dunne, is a world-class birder, and every Monday morning in the spring you can go birding with him at "The Meadows" in Cape May! Check it out on the Events Calender. It's so much fun. His knowledge of birds is encyclopedic, he is very engaging, and just a lovely guy.

He is also a terrific author and writer of essays on birding and nature, which are often funny and almost always moving!

Google "phoebe allen" for a hummingbird webcam - Maggie May

Phoebe is the bird's name. She laid 2 eggs one on the 12th and one on the 15th, one of them just hatched (this morning, I think).

I was just looking at "phoebe allen" today - lovely nest!!

Anyone Enjoy Gardening Or Birding?Apr 24, 2013
I love to hear about what others are doing in their gardens. I am in landscape zone 6a. Cherries are not yet blooming here, but daffodils abound. The magnolias are about to pop, and the maples are close. Meanwhile, ospreys and cormorants have returned. Red-winged blackbirds and common grackles have returned, as have the eastern blubirds. I saw tree swallows last weekend and barn swallows this weekend. Pretty much all of the diving ducks have gone north by now. ...

It includes a story about Pope Francis and his ministering to the poor.  For the first time in my 61 years on this earth, I've never respected a Pope to the extent that I respect this Pope, for he is showing, IMHO, TRUE Christianity in the face of those too greedy to care about the poor, choosing instead to take food out of children's mouths in the richest nation in the world and the contempt for them by the GOP/TP  (and I'm not even Catholic).  The TP/CONS cou ...

I started watching it in the beginning just because of Adam Levine, and I've found I'm loving it the way Americal Idol used to get me.  I love the banter between the coaches, though Christina gets a little too crude for me sometimes.  But I like her otherwise.  What do you think of the talent?  I voted for Frenchie Davis today.
