Would like to find place for family items

Posted: Jan 3, 2016

My mother and father both deceased and I have some of their things as well as my own. I am trying to discard things but just do not want to throw away in the garbage. Is there any place that might take clothing items that might be older, not up to date things. I would feel much better if able to help someone else out with what I have this way rather than just trashing things.

lots of charities... - anon

I'm sure there is a charity in your area that will take anything in usable condition, no matter what the "style." Look for Goodwill, The Salvation Army, The Rescue Mission. Where my mom lives they have a shop for a cancer charity that takes donations, sells the items in the shop, and the proceeds go to help families of cancer patients.

taking them to a senior living place? I am sure that many in any senior home would be interested in the items.

this is the place I drop off all items. They provide new living spaces for homeless women getting a new start on life.
any thrift store/goodwill/always take donations/drop off at their back door/no need to wait for receipt.

Older items. - Recycler.

Thank you for recycling! I know for a fact that schools and local theater groups will buy some of the older items from charity shops to use as props. The money then goes to help the charity. So, don't feel uncomfortable about donating out-of-date items.

There is a Unitarian church not too far from my apartment. Twice a year they have an all-day event where people can bring things to give away or take anything they see there that they need. There are no questions asked and you do not have to be a Unitarian to participate in it. (I am not a Unitarian.) After the day is over, they have a committee that gathers what is left and they divide it between three charities--one for people living with AIDS, one for refugees, and one other one, not sure which. Anyway, I have Unitarian friends who inform me when these days are going to be and throughout the year I save things for them. Some people have been able to start their first apartments by going here and this has been of huge value to the refugee community. Not sure if all Unitarian churches do that or only this one, but they seem like pretty social action oriented folks, so I would imagine that the one where I donate is not the only one.

Re UU churches...SM - Old Anon

Hi Nick: Not all UU (Unitarian/Universalist) churches operate the same way. I belonged to a UU church for years in a middle-class mill town in New England. We eventually had to close because of dwindling membership, but there is a UU church about 25 miles away in a bedroom community/college town closer to Boston which has a huge membership (location makes a big difference). My church had a flea market/rummage sale once a year which also was very popular. At the end of the day, what we couldn't sell was taken to the Salvation Army around the corner from us. Some UU churches are more socially active than others. Ours was minimally because we only had about 20 members to draw from many of whom were elderly. So we had the same 10 members, or so, doing everything. It's the only religious group I would belong to, as the members governed things, of course within the guidelines of the national organization; but there is very little interference with how we did things.

Thanks for the information. I have gotten to know several UU people, mostly through my legal work. The thing that has impressed me about them is their commitment to social justice and their outreach to the poor and disenfranchised. The church where I donate seems to have a lot going--they have a choir that gives concerts for the public, have a community garden, etc. They have various speakers come and speak on issues of current concern and political interest. It is a medium sized church. I have gotten to know several of the members and have been quite impressed with their openness and caring about people who otherwise might live on the margins. There was an attorney several years ago (he has passed away) in Denver who was a big stick in both the UU and the ACLU and he did a lot for poor people, took on a lot of pro bono cases, etc. Although I did not know him personally, he was very well known in the world of poverty law as kind of this icon who would help people who really needed a lawyer but could not afford one. Anyway, I will keep on donating what I can to the UU group here. Once the cold winter passes, they will probably have another event.

New Items In My Etsy ShopAug 01, 2010
Good evening, everyone!  Hope today finds you well.  Just a post about some new items in my Etsy shop such as stitch markers, new necklaces, bracelets, rings, etc.  I recently (this week) lost my at-home MT job.  I am in the process of looking for a new one.  If anyone has any leads, I'd greatly appreciate it.   Of course, this happens after we buy my 17-yo DS his first vehicle.  Have a great week, everyone! ...

Two More Items To Add To Obama's LegacyJan 19, 2017
1. (a)  All totaled so far, he communited 1715 jail sentences. This is the most in the history of this country. Besides the drug dealers he commuted the sentence of a treasonist ( Pvt. Manning) because he thought he was punished enough.  Is 7 years enough of a sentence of someone who risked the security of this country? I don't think so. The government used to hang or shoot people convicted of treason. I don't think 35 yeras is too much to ask.  Even some ...

Hitler - I Assume This Is The Right Place To Put ThisNov 27, 2009
I have one of those extremely analytical minds that wonders about so many things.  I must have been a really annoying todder because I'm sure  I asked the word "why" too many times. I was watching something on the History Channel on Hitler and how he wanted to build a master race - blonde hair and blue eyes - the exact opposite of who he was.  So did he not consider himself part of the master race?  I wonder how many people in Germany thought the same but were afraid to ...
