U.S. "official" language

Posted: Mar 29, 2011

I am Mexican-American.  Born and raised right here in the good ol' U.S. of A.  I am trilingual and college educated.

I was out at the grocery store last night, was in line when the lady behind me asked me in Spanish about the instructions on a box of stuffing.  I was explaining to her how to make in, (In Spanish) when I overheard the cashier trying to whisper, telling the bag boy that she wishes "we" would learn to speak the official language or "go back to Mexico".

I said "excuse me?" she turned red and then started fumbling for an excuses.  I called for the manager when all of the sudden another customer began to defend the cashier, saying that "who knows what we were talking about, and it could have been insulting and why don't we talk English since we were in America".

I left my items and walked out, telling the manager and cashier I was going to let the newspaper and TV know about the incident.  (the lady is a friend of my mom's and also speaks English by the way).

I was furious!  Got me to thinking... why does it offend some when they hear people speaking a different language?  You think that cashier would have been equally offended or put off if I spoke German (my other language)? or is it just Spanish?  I wonder if she is aware that the U.S. doesn't have an "official language", that English is the de facto language, but congress will not name an "official language" and that debate has been going on for decades.  I wonder also if that ninny realizes that "America" are continents, not a "country", that our country is the United States OF America   AND when they tell a Mex-American person to "go back to where they came from", if they KNOW how much of the US was Mexico's a long time ago, and that essentially, WE'VE been here all along!  I'm a Cali gal, born and raised.  My family has been here since the late 1700's!  Landowners still!

I am running out of ways to defend my stance against ignorance.  I just wanted to vent.   Sorry its all over the place...

It was ignorant of them. Racists. I knew a German man who HATED anyone who spoke Spanish around him, yet when he was around his family and friends always spoke German! Go figure.

I know it's hard, but put people like that out of your mind. Sadly, once that mindset has taken place, it probably will never change.

I think anyone who can speak more than one language is very lucky.

I think it's just plain old RUDE. People can't understand what you're saying. AND FYI: ENGLISH is the official language, everyone knows that.
And AMERICA is a country. College educated my aunt Fanny.

Go educate yourself. I am trying to learn spanish so I can relate to the soon-to-be majority in this country. "And crowned thy good with brotherhood from sea to shining sea." Whatever happened to THAT America?

English should be the official language. The USA is - ignorant for not deciding it long ago.

[ In Reply To ..]
Schools educate the kids to speak English, yet have no official language.. how idiotic. We should have always had ONE "official" language, but everyone has always been free to learn any other language of their choosing. Its ridiculous any other way.

My city has a HUGE Hispanic population and many of our schools are and have been bilingual for years and years. In the past 10 years a few of the elementary schools decided to also introduce a third language starting at the 1st grade level and if the student stayed in the district, they would graduate fluent in 2 languages and conversant in yet a third (Russian, Japanese, Chinese, French and there are other choices too. The idea behind this is so that these children have an advantage in the real working world, which is changing dramatically every year, with foreign companies setting up shops here in our country.

This is a HUGE deal and the waiting list to get into these schools is looooong! I am proud of my city. It embraces the diversity that exists here and offers an opportunity that few other schools in the U.S. do.

I think that it is rude, too. - Just like the ladies at the nail salon

I guess I should have said, "The ladies in - the nail salon I go to."

Feel better now? I am categorizing the ladies in the nail salon that I deal with. I certainly was not talking about all the ladies in every nail salon everywhere.
why do you patronize that salon? - they should do your nails and be quiet?

You are happy to have these women perform a service for you, but you begrudge them their conversation?

Go find yourself a happy American to do your nails. Oh wait - Americans don't do that, do they.
re: Nail salons - IMHO
[ In Reply To ..]
Oh, there are some American ladies that work in salons... it'll cost you your arm, leg and probably your first born though!

I am African American, in my town we are the majority population.

In my town the salon I frequent is owned by a Korean family and a lot of times they are just happily talking and laughing with each as they work. They talk to me as if they are practicing their English so many conversations turn out funny! It's a nice place. They even offer tea or water or a soda. The owner tells me that family and friends take jobs there, fresh from Korea while they get their ducks in a row to live in the U.S.

A mani pedi there runs me about 35 bucks and I tip. Fills are 20.

At the salon a bit further up the street, it is local owned. Patrons are barely acknowledged when they walk in the door, then instead of hello, you are greeted with a "do you have an appointment?" while the receptionist never even looks up from the books.

They talk to each other, also; about how miserable they are, their terrible lives, their bratty kids, how hungry they are, how tired they are (like you want a hungry tired someone working on your toenails??) But mostly they are rude, never acknowledge you, i'm just put in the chair and get my work done and then they say, your done, pay at the register...

Cost there: 55 to 60 bucks! 30 dll fills.

I frequent the Korean establishment. I know that they are probably saying the same thing, but they are friendlier, very fast and at least talk to me as best they can! There are always people in there that speak Korean and English and interpret. I have FUN at that salon.

I go where they provide the best service and a reasonable price, language barrier or not.
In the town where I grew up there was a nail salon - with girls who spoke English as a first language a
[ In Reply To ..]
they were very friendly and cheerful and not too expensive (as opposed to what the lady below said). I liked that salon. In the last town I lived in, there was a Vietnamese owned salon where the ladies were very very nice, friendly and did not speak Vietnamese to each other while working. They did chat with each other in English and I enjoyed going there--it was fairly expensive, though, although not $60 for a pedicure. This new town only has one nail salon and the ladies there talk on and on in Vietnamese and barely acknowledge me when I walk in the door. They usually greet me with, "Do you have an appointment?" which I don't find particularly offensive. I am a little offended when they call each other over in Vietnamese and hold a conversation while pointing to my nails and never tell me what they are saying, even when I ask. Are they saying anything nasty? I really don't know, but it is rude. I go back because I don't want to drive an hour to go somewhere else and they do a good job. Like I said, there are plenty of other things that people do that are rude and there is not much to be done about it. And by the way--I pay these women for their services. It's not as if they are doing it out of the kindness of their hearts. And, I tip well. I don't really think it's too much to ask that they speak English, but it's probably not going to happen.

Speaking of this, have you seen the - sm

The debate about why we call our country American is a hot topic. We just do, like a nickname. We are Americans, not United Statians! It's like calling the ocean between the states and England the "pond". It's just a harmless term of endearment.

I get what you are saying and know that the Americas contain many, many countries, but in general conversation, when you mention American, anywhere in the world, it is just understood that you mean the U.S.A. It shouldn't be interpreted as offensive.

As for the rest, sorry you encountered an ignoramus. That's all I can say. I also think that anytime a person takse the time to learn another language or two that it's to their benefit. Congratulations on that, but you shouldn't get so overly defensive, to the point where you come across as just as ignorant as the person who insulted you.

I don't believe anyone really needs a history lesson. Most of us are really and truely aware of the history of our country. There's no need to pull out the books to prove your point. I really am sorry you were insulted, but sadly, ignorance runs rampant all over the world.

You should stand proud and go back to that store as if nothing happened! Maybe now that you brought it to their attention, they'll be more considerate of their customer's diversity.

I have a wonderful lady who cleans my house. She brought someone with her yesterday. I liked her too. They were speaking Spanish as they were working.

At one point the new lady had run downstairs, done a few more things, ran into my office, came out again and said, "Mucho Mucho!"

My imagination is going wild. Did she mean my office has too much in it? Did she mean the house is bigger than she thought? Did she mean...you see what I mean, my imagination is going crazy.

How would you interpret it. My Spanish used to be good, but it isn't anymore.

Thanks!

re: question - cowgal

Maybe she was saying you have a lot of stuff. mucho mucho just means much much. but she could have been using it loosely. I guess it depended on the circumstance at the moment she was saying it.

Could have been mucho mucho work to be done, mucho mucho dirty house, mucho mucho stairs to climb or clean... I don't see why you'd let your imagination "go wild"! Maybe she was just also trying to acknowledge YOU and it was a silly way of saying just any old thing!

Maybe she was just complimenting your home.

Next time, stop her and try to find a way to talk to her! The only way you're going to remember your Spanish is to use it! You've got a beautiful opportunity there. Have fun with it!

Thanks! I think I know what she meant - see message

[ In Reply To ..]
I liked her very much, so I will do a you suggested next time. I would love to have the opportunity to use a little bit of my Spanish. I do occasionally, and people enjoy laughing with me about how bad it is, but they understand what I'm trying to say.

All of the house is pretty clean, other than my office. It's a fairly big house, so I think she was shocked when my regular housecleaner knocked on my office door and told me she was ready to clean my office. She was probably thinking, another room?! Oh my! She has to knock on the office door so I can take my dog, who is not allowed to be around people, and leave the office so it can be cleaned.

My office is a disaster area! There is no way they could even get to the surface of the desk because of all of the books and files all over it, income tax, etc.

A few minutes after that, she made the comment. She was cheerful about it. I don't think she was complaining. I know I should have just stopped right then and asked, but I didn't. I'll do that next time, although I think I've been shamed into cleaning my desk. LOL.

Thanks again!

I'm a second generation American on both sides. I had paternal grandparents from Italy and maternal grandparents who were Sovak. Like many 2nd gen kids, I could understand Italian (only a little Slovak) more than I could speak it. When I was 18, I moved in with my Slovak grandmother, who happened to live in a city neighborhood full of Italian immigrants. Her Italian neighbors really kept my Slovak grandmother at a distance. When I moved in with her, they assumed I was 100% Slovak. One day, the neighbors were sitting on the stoop within earshot of me, and they were chattering away about me in Italian, saying that I was the "Polish lady's granddaughter" and that I looked more Italian (I do). They made some snippy little comments about us and talked about how they would need to keep their sons away from me. It actually made me laugh a little. Finally, I turned to them, and in what little Italian I knew, I explained to them that my father's people were Italian. The look on their faces when they realized that I understood everything they had been saying was just priceless! They were thoroughly embarrassed. I laughed, told them it was okay, and we started a conversation. After that, they were friendlier to my grandmother and always called me by my Italian name. For the rest of the time that I lived there, the next door neighbor nearly fell over herself to give me figs that she grew in her yard. That's quite a gift from an old-world Italian!

I suppose people naturally like to keep to their own kind. Unfortunately, that isolation can lead to rude, hateful behavior. Happily, a little education and pleasant exchanges between people seems to go a long way in breaking down barriers.

There has been attempts over decades to make English the "lingua franca" with repect to international businesses, airport communications, scientists and technology. It is not set in stone as THE world language, and you can imagine that world wide it is not a concept that is embraced. So Lingua franca, yes. International language, not so much.

English is the international language, not only of business, but of aviation - pilots have to know it. In schools around the globe, including China, India, Russia, all students are expose to English at a very young age. In the United Arab Emirates, English begins at 18 months - that's when formal education begins for their kids. Compare that to the US where most kids aren't expose to a new language until middle or high school - we are so far behind the rest of the world, it is pathetic. I believe in speaking English here, but I also believe we need to educate ourselves about the rest of the world and learning their language and culture is the way to do it. There is no reason why our kids can't learn 5 or 6 languages by high school and this is something we really need to do, like yesterday.
I so agree! - Immigrant stock

I just don't understand why people get so defensive when they hear other languages being spoken. As a nation, our approach to language education is pitiful. Anyone who has grown up in a bilingual household, as I did, knows that it is a blessing to know another language. It allows us to connect with more people, and that's such a wonderful thing.

Yet, we see over and over again, Americans who angrily, and in my opinion, very ignorantly carry on when they hear a foreign language being spoken. They act as if it's some sort of assault on the American way of life, when in fact, that IS the American.

When I had that first conversation with my Italian neighbors in the city, they asked me if I were Italian. I said to them, "Io sono Americana." I am an American.

There are so many people who come to live in America and never learn to speak English. They have babies here and teach them their native language and when it is time for them to go to school, my tax dollars have to pay for an interpretor for the school so that this child who was born here can learn English. That is what a lot of people, including myself disagree with. If you live in America, you need to learn English. Then there are tons of people here who are not even legal and they are taking away jobs from Americans. On top of all that, people come to America, don't speak the language and gets loans to start business, education paid for, etc., etc. and we who live in America have to tell our kids that they can not go to college or we can not get a business loan to start a business, etc., etc. because all the foreigners have come over here, taken up all the money and are given everything on a silver platter, Americans get screwed and they can not even understand us when we try to talk to them!!

re: anon - imo

[ In Reply To ..]
It was barely in the late 1800s, early 1900 that English became the dominant language in the U.S. All over the country there were cities and towns everywhere in which other languages were spoke. In schools at that time, which ever language was dominant is what classes were taught and bilingualism being taught was the norm rather than the exception.

There are still communities all over the states in which immigrants seek out knowing their language and culture will be predominant. Because it is not against the law in our country, they are free to speak, conduct their day to day activities and live their whole lives speaking their native tongue. Regardless of how they were raised, they are American Citizens and entitled to the same opportunities that we all are.

"Foreigners" aren't taking your jobs away. In my community the people you are referring to do the menial labor and jobs that most American's consider "beneath" them; cook, clean, yard work, back breaking farm work... Our community was in such an uproar several years ago that the "illegals" were taking all the jobs that for one spring and harvest season the mayor insisted that the farmers hire only from the community. Well let me tell you, NO ONE showed up at the bus pick up station to take the helpers to the fields! BUT there were hundreds of people protesting about "how dare we be treated like lowly cotton pickers"!

It's my contention that a job is a job and when you complain that your so far down on your luck you can't feed your family, PICK COTTON!

Next season our farmers picked up the normal workers.

I am not insulted or put off when a person comes to this great country of ours in an attempt to better their life situation, and if they bring their family and go about all the legal procedures to live here and contribute to our communities, more power to them.

Let me say this though, HERE in my community the majority of the people receiving all those benefits you are talking about are life time welfare recipients. generation after generation of American's who refuse to try to better their lives and live off of our taxes; free housing, stipends for bills, free food, free medical care, free education (of which they usually just cash the check and drop out)... Do THOSE people make you just as angry? They speak English so you'll be able to understand them...

Long gone are the days that people are thrown into the public school systems and made to feel that their language and culture mean NOTHING. That they have to start to live the way we MAKE then live. The "melting pot" meant we were all melted down to form one shape. We now all it a "stew pot or salad bowl", where each individual contributes to the "flavor" of the dish. THAT is what makes our country absolutely AWESOME.

So basically then its about jealousy. - I get it.

What about the people in this country who have disabilities but there is no money for them, and no I am not talking about the people who sit on their a** and collect disability because they do not want to work and just keep popping out babies. What about a child in this country that just because his parents make an income greater than a homeless person but not enough to pay for the medical care they needed but can not afford, can not get disability benefits due to his medical condition because there is nothing left for them?! I am not jealous, just think that America should take care of their own first!

I understand the FRUSTRATION you feel, but your anger needs to be focused on your government, NOT the (your words) "foreigners".

You need to learn about how the government works. You don't really think that people come over illegally and are handed a public housing and foodstamp voucher do you?

There are very many issues that our country needs to work on, so many so that it overwhelms our officials and more often than not, they chose to deal with the biggest ones; like security, environment, the next elections, taxes... Unfortunately it seems that we barely have a government anymore, that likely this country is going to be run by the Chinese businessmen whom have lent us billions and billions and are now wanting it back! (IMO, IMO, IMO)

It is not the fault of the immigrants that our country is in billions and trillion dollars of debt, that is the fault of our government!

If a person comes here from another country, the process to get benefits is long and they'd better hope and pray that they find a church, ministry or sponsor family or friends to help them during that time.

My neighbors have family from the middle east living in their converted garage. They arrived here about 9 months ago and right off were vilified and the boy even beat up, he's only 17! The kids that beat him up call him "hajji or towel head", some of the other kids thought his name was "tal" and that's what they call him. He goes along with it, but how can he but hate it. His name is Azeem.

They can't enroll him in school. Not only do they not speak English, but they don't have all their papers. They can't get jobs right now, even though the husband is an master electrician in his country, so he does odd jobs and the lady (who was a teacher) cleans houses and yards. The boy is miserable and I worry for him. I made my son and his friends talk to him (as best they can) and they now are his "protectors" and have started to get him out of his hiding hole.

They have had it rough, as rough as rough can be. the neighborhood has banded together NOW and we help them get food and clothes, make sure they have heat and cooling. They certainly did not come here and get ANYTHING handed to them on a silver platter.

It's important, very, very important that we not LUMP a racist stereotype onto absolutely everyone we meet that looks "foreign" and doesn't speak English. They might be running away from a horrible situation, like this family, trying to escape a war torn country.

We don't have a declared language but English SHOULD BE - our official language.

[ In Reply To ..]
This company should not make any amends for those who do not speak English; it should be the requirement to come here.

I don't care for hearing other languages here but as long as you can speak English and do all legal business, etc., in English, speak whatever you want.

Since our constitution was written in English why is English not our officical language? Do any taxpayers realize what it is costing us to produce documents bilingual instead of just English? Also some of the illegals do collect income tax refunds, they do it with a tax id number instead of a SSN. I do agree with one of the other posts - Tunisia and Egypt speak English fluently when I was there. Why is our country going backwards?

re: Proud - history student

[ In Reply To ..]
Yes, it was written in English, but did you know that back they they also were keenly aware of the need to interpret it very carefully to those who did not speak English?

Our countrie's framers were very aware of the diverse populations and made interpeters were on hand. Today, we just assume everyone speaks English which leads to many problems; people not understanding that they are being "detained" and not arrested, people not knowing that you have the right NOT to have your vehicle or home or person seached...

I've been to Egypt too. There are some people and some businesses, in the touristy sections that do speak English, not fluent but you make is sound like EVERONE speaks it fluent there does and they do not. I was very glad I had a friend to interpret!

As for me on the issue of should it be our "official" language. I don't mind one way or another! As far as I'm concerned it already is, because IT is the dominant and most used language here. (we just need to teach our younger generation how to preserve it! Ugh, their "texting and slang" talk is butchering English!!)

How does language make our country "backward"?? I think it's cool that anyone cam come here and find people who speak their language!

I still don't DEMAND nor EXPECT every single person I encounter in my day to day living to speak it though.

I'd say you and your friend were the ignorant ones. If you both speak English (how do we know you speak 3 languages and having a college degree in this country doesn't mean anything anymore - they give them out like prizes in Cracker Jack). Why do you think it necessary that your hurt feelings were fit for TV and the news? Why is it a federal offense for someone to comment about speaking English in THIS COUNTRY? I lived in Colombia, SA, and I can tell you about rudeness when you don't speak the native language fluently. We speak English here and Hispanics' insistence that WE accept THEIR language and culture does not endear you to us. If you want to be here and live in the American culture, fine, but millions of Hispanics come here and INSIST on their own language, culture and foodstuff - why didn't they stay in their own countries? It also chaps us that you add millions to our overstrapped budgets because we have to provide translators for you and have everything printed in your language, which a lot of you can't even read because you are illiterate in Spanish. What's the name of this store and its address? I would like to show my support by ordering something from them.

I believe it is YOU who is showing YOUR IGNORANCE! She was talking to a friend who obviously asked her a question in Spanish, which she answered in Spanish!

And she doesn't owe you the time of day, much less proof of the fact that she speaks 3 languages. And you direct your tirate to the OP "...you add millions to our overstrapped budget".

What about the MILLIONS that the illegal immigrant populations generate FOR our country?? Ever wonder about the fact that since they are illegal and without social security numbers yet collect pay checks, then are unable to file for income tax where THAT money goes? It's a pretty penny.

I agree that there are issues regarding illegal immigration, but I am NOT one to cast disparaging, racists remarks against a population as a whole.

It's not really a newsworthy story so much, perhaps a letter to the editor would serve the purpose, BUT discrimination should not be tolerated.

I think your post is harsh, but you're entitled your opinion, as is she.

What makes yours just plain old dumb is that you say stupid things here and there, like degrees given out like cracker jack prizes, which tells me you OBVIOUSLY don't have one! And that degrees don't mean anything??? Lack of degree is why so many of us are STUCK in the world of transcription pecking away for a meager pay check.

So you lived in Columbia! There isn't a country in the world that is like ours! We are more TOLERANT and ACCEPTING of others (well, most of us)
Perhaps THAT is why so many millions and millions of people from countries all over the world want to come here to better their lives, because they KNOW there will be communities that speak their language and maintain their cultures.

I also embrace the diversity that is ours. We really are a great country.

My husband's parents are Lebanese and BARELY speak English, but sure know how to "sign" and draw pictures to communicate with their customers! (they own a little store).

âFortunately, the time has long passed when people liked to regard the United States as some kind of melting pot, taking men and women from every part of the world and converting them into standardized, homogenized Americans. We are, I think, much more mature and wise today. Just as we welcome a world of diversity, so we glory in an America of diversity -- an America all the richer for the many different and distinctive strands of which it is woven.â ~Hubert Humphrey, America's 38th vice president
