AZ Judge: It's official. Sheriff Arpaio is a racist.

Posted: May 24, 2013

A federal judge ruled Friday that the office of America’s self-proclaimed toughest sheriff systematically singled out Latinos in its trademark immigration patrols, marking the first finding by a court that the agency racially profiles people.

The 142-page decision by U.S. District Judge Murray Snow in Phoenix backs up allegations that Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio’s critics have made for years that his officers violate the constitutional rights of Latinos in relying on race in their immigration enforcement.

Snow, whose ruling came more than eight months after a seven-day, non-jury trial on the subject, also ruled Arpaio’s deputies unreasonably prolonged the detentions of people who were pulled over.

The ruling represents a victory for those who pushed the lawsuit. They weren’t seeking money damages but rather a declaration that Arpaio’s office engages in racial profiling and an order that requires it to make policy changes.

in my personal opinion, I believe we should put a moratorium on ALL immigrants until we can get our OWN people employed in jobs that pay enough to LIVE on.

As far as Mexico is concerned, most of the immigrants are adding to the poverty pool, and they are entitled automatically to welfare and Medicaid. I personally don't understand how and why they are automatically given those benefits. But they are, and those benefits are very expensive.

I say we take care of our OWN citizens first.

And I'm a liberal.

Well then, a good start would be to find Americans - willing to

take sub-minimum wage/no benefits jobs requiring 6-7-day work weeks in the agricultural, service, retail and restaurant industries. You do realize what would happen to the economies of states like Texas, California and southern tier agricultural sectors without those contributions undocumented workers make, not to mention the taxes they pay. Even Rick Then-You-Don't-Have-A-Heart Perry realizes that much.

Immigration reform is not nearly as much about new immigrants as it is about the ones who are already here and have been here for years, if not decades.
Here's a thought - instead of them sitting back (sm) - Not a Liberal

and collecting government benefits, they should be required to take whatever jobs are offered to them. Oh, wait, Obama cut back on the welfare work requirements that Bill Clinton instituted. Obama WANTS them to lie back and collect. Payback for something?
Here's another thought or 2 + a question thrown down - for good measure
[ In Reply To ..]
Obama did not cut back on work requirements. He actually expanded those programs to provide work-ready skills enhancement and job training for recipients so they and theirs can get better pay and have upward mobility instead of being trapped in generational poverty cycles.

Where is the data to back up the sick and blatantly bigoted claim that immigrants all end up on government benefits? Data should look something like this.

Links 1 and 2 below inform us that CURRENT restrictions preventing non-immigrants from accessing federal public benefits will also apply to lawful probationary immigrants" under immigration reform. Furthermore, among men of working age, 94% of undocumented immigrants are in the labor force, compared with 85% of legal immigrant men and 83% of U.S.-born men. See link 3.

Less than 1 percent of illegal-immigrant-headed households included anyone receiving direct government cash assistance, such as Temporary Aid for Needy Families (TANF), Supplemental Security Income (SSI) or state-run cash aid. This is not surprising since they are generally barred from receiving such payments.

By contrast, a MAJORITY of Americans have received federal benefits of one kind or another in their lifetimes. Link 4.

I could go on and on and on some more providing scores of ways to discredit every single syllable of your post, but I think most folks here can get the general gist from the few facts presented here.

Might want to ask yourself how many Hispanics in AZ have legal status. The answer might help you better understand the issue.

Read the Brisiera Torres story. She's the one that lost her home, car and ability to care for her daughter behind this garbage after being wrongfully detained for 4-1/2 months without bail. Hers was not an isolated case, which you will plainly see while plowing though that 142 pages.

Maybe you don't realize that Sheriffs are entrusted to serve ALL the people, not just the racist bigots in their jurisdiction. That would include the brown ones who help pay his salary.

For sheriffs like this guy, that's a solid green light to fill up the prisons and get their "money's worth."

"The Brown Ones"? I'm one of "the brown ones" - your post is incredibly offensive and racist
[ In Reply To ..]
For someone who claims to be against racial profiling you picked the wrong words. What you wrote is highly offensive and racist.

I am not "a brown one". I am a person. Just happened to have some color to my skin.
Choice of words alludes to Sheriff Arpaio's point of view - not my own
[ In Reply To ..]
I too am offended that the sheriff steps out on Arizona streets looking for all "the brown ones" (especially since they pay his salary) instead of simply striving to protect all the "persons" in his jurisdiction.

[ In Reply To ..]
Frankly, I'm rather tired of PC when it includes people making up reasons to substantiate not being a racist. If people just had the courage to own their feelings, it would negate the need to argue about who's racist and who isn't. I'll even go first. I'm bigoted against people who show up at Tea Party rallies with their guns and their signs with a Hitler mustache on Obama and other unsavory posters. People like Ted Nugent make my hair stand on end. See how easy that is?
Did you feel the same way - about...
[ In Reply To ..]
people who used to show up at anti-war rallies with Hitler mustaches on pictures of Bush or are you only prejudiced against those that don't agree with your way of thinking? That actually makes the argument a little more complicated.
that would be - NK
[ In Reply To ..]
Only the ones who don't agree with my way of thinking, of course. Although I must admit I don't remember any pictures of Bush with a Hitler mustache. Maybe as a chimp, but that's pretty tame in comparison to the hated Hitler. Or Hitler mustaches on any other President going back to the first one I remember - Harry Truman. FDR was accused of being a Communist though. And I thought we weren't allowed to bring up Bush when someone is talking about Obama.
I was just trying to gage who you were - prejudiced against.
[ In Reply To ..]
That's where the argument gets complicated. There is a real problem with racism, but it's not in people who disagree with the policies of a black president - there are a lot of conservative people that are black that I totally agree with and very much respect. I'm guessing, though, that you don't agree with people like Dr. Ben Carson or Tim Scott or Allen West - does that make you racist?

And just to jog your memory, here's a link for all the Bush/Hitler pics - you can ignore the blog that comes first if you like. The only reason I brought up Bush was because you expressed outrage at the Hitler/Obama pics and I was just curious if you were upset at the entire premise or just when used with Obama.

http://www.zombietime.com/zomblog/?p=612
Actually, - NK
[ In Reply To ..]
I think outrage is a hyperbolic word to use for my post. I had an elderly friend, now deceased, who used to end all our phone conversations with "remember who you are," and it took me awhile to figure that out. I feel no need to answer your question of whether I might be a racist if I don't endorse Dr. Carson, Tim Scott, or Allen West. I do know who I am and what I am, and that's all that's important to me.

The point of my OP was merely to suggest that everyone own his or her own intolerances.
See? That's the kind of attitude I'm - talking about!
[ In Reply To ..]
If more people had that attitude, things would be so much easier! Worry about who you are and what your own "intolerances" are. When someone calls you a racist (or implies that you are one), laugh them off and explain that you know who you are and that's all that matters.

It might just quell all those calls of faux racism if everyone would understand most dems don't like republicans and most republicans don't like dems - really has nothing to do with race. That was my point.
Except - NK
[ In Reply To ..]
in the cases where it's not "faux" racism.
True, - but...
[ In Reply To ..]
we need to stop calling everyone that disagrees with the president a racist. It's true that there are people that don't like him because he's black, but we can't place that label on everyone. Case in point with Tim Scott - you don't agree with him, but that doesn't make you a racist. Now, if you had said you didn't like him because he's not a "real black," like I've heard some describe black republicans, that would be racist. Therein lies the difference.
Were you offended by the Occupy Wall streeters - who peed on cars and (sm)
[ In Reply To ..]
fornicated in the streets? Obama defended those. Guess we see which way his mind goes, don't we?
pfff - sm
[ In Reply To ..]
I hope you realize that racism is not the same thing as taking umbrage at bad behavior. That said, I don't recall anyone defending street urinaters or street fornicaters.
