Orientated is NOT a word! It is oriented. Get it right. If I hear it one more time...

Posted: Mar 31, 2014

X;

I think you will find that 'orientated' IS a word. - See OED.

[ In Reply To ..]
No, it is not what we on the west side of the pond are used to hearing, but yeah, it IS actually a word. Lol. Try a little tolerance.

Well according to my Acct Specs and English Dictionary - it is not word

[ In Reply To ..]
and I am so sick of changing all the time because the same dictator says it that way every time and VR doesn't pick up on the change after 5000 times of changing. I just had a bad day yesterday and was at the end of of my rope after hearing "orientated" for the umpteenth time.

If it is a word that's fine but I was taught differently and I just hate the pronunciation and won't tolerate it.

Hate it all you want, it IS a real word - nm

[ In Reply To ..]
x
yup, it is - nm
[ In Reply To ..]

OED is an English dictionary - nm

[ In Reply To ..]

It is an adjective, it is a word. On top of that - if

[ In Reply To ..]
I had a company and had an MT that kept changing a word that is a real word just because she didn't like the sound of it she wouldn't be working for me anymore.

You won't "tolerate it"????

Adj. 1. orientated - adjusted or located in relation to surroundings or circumstances; sometimes used in combination; "the house had its large windows oriented toward the ocean view"; "helping freshmen become oriented to college life"; "the book is value-oriented throughout"
oriented
orientating, orienting - positioning with respect to a reference system or determining your bearings physically or intellectually; "noticed the bee's momentary orienting pause before heading back to the hive"; "an orienting program for new employees"
Well you'd have to fire me then because I've always changed it - and will keep doing so!
[ In Reply To ..]
I don't want to keep going round and round if it is a word or not, I personally hate it, just like "indexes" and "enthused" and "amongst" and "ofTen" and however else people mispronounce words.

I've always changed it to oriented and will keep changing it until my MTSO tells me otherwise and if I get fired over it, oh well. I'm not paid enough to be an English teacher as it is.

So it will always be alert and oriented to me!

I just wanted to vent but apparently my OP started an argument. On well.

Rant over!
Then why not change every single word - it's a real word whether or not you like it
[ In Reply To ..]
my rant is over.
You're allowed to change words just because - you don't like them?
[ In Reply To ..]
:O

I'm with you... - TrampledUnderfoot

[ In Reply To ..]
Maybe they're right and it's a "word", but it's not the correct word. The correct word is "oriented". I also refuse to type "indexes". The plural of index is indices.

TUF, it's not my preference either, but it is - just as correct as oriented

[ In Reply To ..]
it's not at all the same thing as index and indices.

But it is the same.... - TrampledUnderfoot

[ In Reply To ..]
Get enough idiots using the word (like indexes) and finally "they" (whoever they are!) decide it's a real word rather than educating the masses. It happened with tendinitis, though I have no idea why they spelled it that way to begin with. Now that enough people have misspelled it as "tendonitis", it's apparently an acceptable variation.
no, TUF, it is not... - sm
[ In Reply To ..]
Orientate is correct. It is not my preference, but it is as correct as orient.

Tendinitis is spelled the way it is because of the Latin from which the word originates.

Orientated is a word. - nm

[ In Reply To ..]
.

Fine it's a word. Just wanted to vent but got yelled at instead. Whatever. - So done with this post already!

No, it's not a word in standard American English - wheres_my_job

[ In Reply To ..]
There's all kinds of things in the OED that nobody SAYS, much less THINKS, or even READS in books.

The OED is more of a reference work for scholars than it is a guide to contemporary English, much less contemporary standard American English.

So you're on solid ground.

Thanks WMJ :-) I never knew my OP would cause such a debate LOL - n/m

I think we agree that Americans say orient and oriented - sm

[ In Reply To ..]
That doesn't mean that orientate is *not* a word. It certainly doesn't mean that the OED is more of a reference work for scholars. It's a dictionary.
It's a dictionary...that's more of a reference work for scholars - wheres_my_job
[ In Reply To ..]
I haven't heard of any MT companies, or for that matter - universities - telling their employees or students that their "go to" dictionary for correct spelling is the OED.

American English:

transport, not "transportate"
orient, not "orientate"
consult, not "consultate"

transportation, orientation, consultation

This is the way that the word "orient" functions in American English. Is "orientate" a word in American English? No.
WMJ, no one asserts that transportate or consultate are legitimate words - sm
[ In Reply To ..]
Nor does anyone assert that MTs should refer to the Oxford English Dictionary to answer style questions. The fact is, orientate is a word. It's not typical American usage. It's not my preference. But it is a word.
LOL - think that's already been stated a few times - wheres_my_job
[ In Reply To ..]
Some of us disagree. The fact is, 'orientate' is not a word in American English.

LOL - "nor does anyone assert." Geez.

OP & WMJ: Orientation, oriented & orient are all words derived from the word "ORIENTATE."

Check any dictionary, encyclopedia or even ask an English teacher. It IS a word for crying out loud. And as a writer or poet or whatever you do WMJ you should know that.

Orient or Orientate?

The word orient as a noun means "east." It may be capitalized when referring to the geographical location of the Far East.

Example: Hong Kong is located in the Orient.

Orient as a verb means to "find direction" or "give direction." The noun form of this kind of orienting is orientation.

Sometimes people in their speech will form an imagined verb from orientation and say orientate. At best, orientate is a back-formation used humorously to make the speaker sound pompous. The correct word is the verb orient.

Incorrect: Melanie is helping me get orientated to the new job.

Correct: Melanie is helping me get oriented to the new job.

Orientate is more widely accepted in the U.K. than in the U.S.A., but it should be avoided in any formal or standard writing.

For much more on this and other words that are similarly created by back-formation from a noun see http://www.niquette.com/books/101words/orient.htm.

I guess the point here is twofold:
It is a word.
It is a word used incorrectly by the dictator heard by the OP of this thread.

For someone to claim that it is not used in American English, well, they would just be wrong. It is used - it is just used incorrectly more than it is used correctly.

To the OP, you were right in your OP.

Every one of them has serious flaws, either of character, personality, world view, experience, or philosophy - and in most cases more than one of these - that I simply cannot stomach.
