Nuclear fallout/FB

Posted: Mar 18, 2011

So, I've been obsessing over what's going on in Japan because my sister-in-law's family live about 200 miles from where the big stuff happened and we're worried.  I found an interesting and informative news article about the radiation cloud already having reached California and a real-time map showing the progression of the cloud.  It was just kind of a FYI thing, mostly for my sake, but since the rest of my family is following the news too, we have another tool to access.

I got a "comment" from one of my husband's co-workers scolding me, telling me that I shouldn't try to "scare" people into believing that the US is in any danger of fallout, and that "apparently I don't realize that radiation is everywhere, in our cell phones, microwaves, x-rays, hospitals and that it is a post that will just "cause panic" to people who don't know any better". (!!!)

I know I'm not a nuclear scientist, just a lowly transcriptionist, but really???  I am genuinely concerned about what could happen long-term to the people near the reactor, and what, if any, harm can come from yet another nuclear plant spilling radiation into our environment!  That ninny apparently does not realize or care that there are different kinds of radiations, but to scold me and so boldly exercise her ignorance just got be peeved.

I deleted her commend, then she sent me a text asking why.  I decided to go ahead and call her just to explain my posting (though I didn't need to), but she is apparently in a fighting mood and practically demanded that I tell her the differences in radiations and wanted to know "what made me an expert" and blah blah blah.   I don't know what bug crawled up her... ear,  but whatever!  A bit later she re-posted her original comment, I deleted it again and now she has "unfriended me", sent me another text telling me I've humiliated her.  I just don't know what to think except she's a loon!

Hope she doesn't give hubby an earful at work!    Isn't this just nuts??

You're funny! But seriously, of course there is need for concern, I agree. Your husband's co-worker sounds just like what you said, a loon! Don't give her a second thought. I'd like the link to the real-time cloud progression if you would post it.

I am more worried about my husband's job - sm - ECMT

than the radiation. I feel really bad for everyone in Japan though, and hope they get the nuke under control quickly. My DH's company is based in Tokyo and if it folds he is out of a job probably, though the US office is independent of the main headquarters in Japan. This company has offices around the world but the main production plant is in Tokyo, so no supplies, no one in other countries will survive. They were not damaged in the tsunami or earthquake but obviously ability to work and maintain production has got to be sporadic at best right now. This is a very specialized optics/microscope company so not something you can go to the local Radio shack for. So I am really hoping his company comes thru this disaster okay, some of the competitors are in the same boat but not all.

Your DHs coworker sounds like a nut case. Of course they were saying that any cloud will be relatively harmess that it will have all dissapated into the atmosphere, etc. Just hope it is not the oil spill all over again this time with humans being affected (and not the poor fish in the Gulf).

Your fears are legitime and yes.... - see message

she nuts. If she cannot have a calm and intelligible conversation with you I'd say its best to "unfriend her". It doesn't sound like you humilated her. If I were you and she told me that I'd tell her she's full of it and that she's only mad because you deleted her message. I'd also say to her "Look, you sound a little unstable right now, maybe we should talk another time when you've calmed down" (but then again that's just me :-))

I do think there is a reason to be concerned. I know what map you are talking about because my DH showed me the same one. I've also heard that the people who created that map did it to put the fear into the people here to buy up potassium iodide and start taking it. I've heard that a lot of the radiation dissipates into the air before it reaches us (and that I can believe). I forget where I heard it but I heard someone say right now the US is safe (at least for now). I'm on the west coast so I am definitely keeping an eye/ear out on the situation. I lived very close the the Chernobyl accident what that happened and we took precautions and I think the same goes for now (and we are further away then we were with Chernobyl). When I hear from a reliable source that the radiation has indeed hit us then I will take the same precautions I did with Chernobyl.

As for the people in Japan and closer to the radiation can't even describe how sad I feel for them and what they are going through. It's horrible to watch. Their lives are just destroyed.

As for your husband's co-worker I'd just tell her I don't feel like talking to her right now until she calms down and stops acting irrational.

showing up in California the nut job of a "friend" will understand your reason for concern. Seriously, they have been saying all along that it was a possibility so I would have asked her where has she been and how does she know so much.

You are definitely right in being concerned and she is definitely a nut job as others have posted.

re:Sancha - worried too

Sancha, I don't think that any one who has a concern about being exposed to any extra radiation is overreacting. Not one little bit. Any concerned citizen of the world should be concerned.

Your DH's co-worker was probably just angry because you know a little bit more than she does (my sister is like that), or she didn't post something first (my sister is like that too!)

I know the type, they are one-uppers and argumentative, speaking only bits and pieces of half truths and only wanting to hear and give information that they themselves find interesting.

PS. There is need for concern (not hysterics) as Japan says one thing, that being that the people working trying to contain the site have received the equilvalent of exposure to a chest x-ray, yet the American consultate and other countries are evacuating their citizens from a 100 mile radius... Hmm.

Also, that reactor is not contained yet and there are still aftershocks, day before yesterday they got another 6.6 magnitude quake!

Radiation has been detected in as far as New Mexico and Oklahoma already also. Not toxic levels, but it's been detected nonetheless.

Don't worry about your "ninny" FB friend. Better to "unfriend" argumentative people anyway. I've never appreciated the fact that some people use facebook as a political or religious forum rather than a "social" forum. But that's just me.

Why Are The Russian Threats Of Nuclear War Receiving So LittleOct 14, 2016
It might be that Putin is bluffing, of course, but if so it would seem very foolish on his part if he had to back down - and I don't think he'd paint himself into that kind of a corner. He's not a fool. Even so, it still shouldn't be a back-page story IMHO, because this goes along with the polls showing that the Russian populace has been "educated" by their government to believe that the United States is their greatest enemy. We haven't had this kind of overt ...
