worker hours to sidestep ObamaCare Gary Burdette, Vice President of Operations for the local franchise, tells the station that his restaurants cannot afford to pay for health coverage for all their employees under the new Affordable Health Care Act. http://www.wowt.com/home/headlines/Fast-Food-Worker-Hours-Cut---185827392.html;

Employers just cannot afford the health care mandate. At least the NE Wendy's didn't fire anyone.

Not so according to the Urban Institute Health Policy Center - who says

ACA will have a negligible impact on business costs, leaving large companies virtually unaffected while actually reducing costs for small businesses. It's all in the Executive Summary, concise and to the point, followed by a thorough, exhaustive analysis, well documented end notes and references to previous similar studies.

crunched their own numbers and found that Obamacare mandates made it unaffordable. They're doing what they can to stay in business and keep as many people employed as possible.

It's the #2 HB chain in the US, second only to McDonalds. It's 2011 sales were $8.5 BILLION. Of the more than 46,000 employees, only 2800 of them earn salaries, the rest are hourly wage earners.

Sorry. IMO, this just does not paint the picture of a humble little HB chain barely making ends meet that's doing everything they can for their American workers. Watch for them to distance themselves as far away from their Nebraska franchisee as they can possibly get, the same way Denny's did when their FL franchise owner tried to float the 5% surcharge, threatened to cut his employees' hours and fantasized about how that surcharge would cut into servers' tips. Metz ended up issuing an apology, but it was too little, too late to stop the storms of phone calls from irate customers and stem the drop in sales. Denny's is still trying to clean up that mess.

Excellent, concise, clarification of this nonsense - claim. nm

Consumer backlash against hours/benefits cutting according to this link. May hurt their pocketbooks more than just offering the medical benefits.

It's also Wendy's right to do business as they see fit.
Absolutely it's Wendy's right. You're wrong that Wendy's - corporate wouldn't notice dropped sales but R

in that I was so quick to get exasperated that I didn't even notice it was just a franchisee's decision. Whoops. I just dropped corporate a note at http://www.wendys.com/contact.jsp since losing my $5 a month or so probably wouldn't be noticed. And thanks. :)
Never said they wouldn't. - -

And I'm sure they thought about that. Still had to make the hard decision in order to stay in business.

more common, for instance, than telling an employee you just HAD to fire her/cut her salary/cut her hours/promote somebody else over her, etc., etc. because of (and here you choose from a long list of things supposedly out of your control). How often do you think someone is told she's being let go because she doesn't shower often enough, you want to hire your sister's daughter, you want to hire an illegal who'll work cheaper, you're doing it to wave that stiff finger at Obama and brag about it to your friends, and so on?

Obamacare is a great new excuse because the issues aren't clear as glass and most people will just swallow it whole. More comfortable, if nothing else, than the realization that your nice boss, who really seems to like and values you, may see that as no barrier to screwing you over.

BTW, "Wendy's" 2011 earnings? Over 2.4 BILLION.

Something tells me - RC

If these companies are slashing wages and - Fanatical Hypocrite

[ In Reply To ..]
firing people because taxes went up, why did they do it when Bush lowered everyone's taxes? If companies staged these big lay offs because of health care, why were millions fired when they had no benefits? If companies have been offshoring because they can't afford American labor now, why were they doing it for 40 years in ever escalating amounts even as their profits grew and minimum wage continued to dip below the poverty level?

Companies fire people because free market capitalism has been perverted into a system of financial predation by those with the most money. When a lion eats an antelope, it usually isn't because the antelope voted wrong. It just wants to eat. The difference is that a lion will stop eating when its full.

I'll never go in another Nebraska Wendy's again. Admittedly, this will be easy, since I would never go back to Nebraska again anyway.

Nebraska: "The drive-thru state."

Most fast-food jobs are part time anyway. Who - are they trying to fool? n/m

I never eat at Wendy's anyway but several local restaurants here in town have taken similar stands and we just add them to our list of places that we won't spend our money at... One place in particular that we will not go to anymore is a favorite of my little granddaughter who is 8....every so often she will ask me "has Jim's taken back whatever they said that made us not be able to eat there"... LOL... unfortunately, Keira honey, they haven't... but we can always hope the owners will someday learn to care about other people and not just themselves

Nuclear Fallout/FBMar 18, 2011
So, I've been obsessing over what's going on in Japan because my sister-in-law's family live about 200 miles from where the big stuff happened and we're worried.  I found an interesting and informative news article about the radiation cloud already having reached California and a real-time map showing the progression of the cloud.  It was just kind of a FYI thing, mostly for my sake, but since the rest of my family is following the news too, we have another too ...

I Encourage You To Watch Sky News About The Fire And Political FalloutJun 16, 2017
I would encourage you to watch Sky News about the fire. You will see how the politicians there are taking a lot of hatred from the victims of that high rise fire. They hate PM May. The Queen came out right away as did the one running against the PM. She waited till today. Anyway, you can watch it live or slide the slider back to the beginning and you can watch what has been on all day. It is very interesting. The death toll is now 30 and they are missing 70 more.
