New Career....

Posted: Jan 12, 2015

Are there any medical transcriptionists (current or former) who have embarked on a new career or job?  If so, could you please let us know in what field and how it has worked out.  I am so excited about getting out of this field, and I could use some extra motivation! : ) Thank you

I have left MT, hopefully for the last time...sm - Old Woman

I am now a title/accounting clerk for an automobile dealership. It is completely different from what I have done in the past and I am enjoying learning a new field and the fact that I know what my paycheck will be each WEEK...not every other week or twice a month. I think this will help me with budgeting and I am making more than I did as an MT, even with commute expenses. I highly encourage anyone who is tired of being worked over by the big MTSOs to seek employment outside of medical transcription. I feel like a new person!!

Yes, CNA and LPN - CINDY

[ In Reply To ..]
Yes, I took CNA in 2011 and worked in that 4 2 years without doing any MT after 30 years, and then my jobs dried up for a while, but that was okay with me because I was in school for LPN, and I needed to try to get back into MT, so I did and have been back at it for a little over a year and I just passed my LPN boards. Now I am just waiting to find a job doing it, and I have an interview tomorrow. Its not easy to find a job but I'm trying. I figured I already knew all this medical stuff, so I continued on it.

That is my plan too - sm - InkMT

I passed my CNA boards over the summer, also took the Medication aide course, still need to take that state test, will do that soon, filed my papers but left out my evaluation so need to send that in so I can register for the test. Want to do that part-time for now, one or the other, though medication aide would be a lot easier, hoping to find a job doing that on a weekend basis or a few hours at night but not a full shift. Eventually going for LPN, though my teachers were all "go for RN"...they going to pay for it and pay my bills while I go to school full-time? Don't think so.....need to see about some sort of grant, would be great if I could get one for LPN schooling.
Good luck! : ) Sounds a lot like my plan : ) - GoodbyeMT

Planning on taking a CNA or STNA course (whichever I can find nearby), and then I'm going to school to be an RN. They no longer offer LPN courses at the state college here. They said the reason for this is a lot of LPNs have to go back to school as they are being phased out. It will take three years total, and then I want to go back to school to keep going for my Master's in nursing. Good luck to you! :)

I would love to get into an auto dealership, but - all the ones near me want "experience".

I actually worked for my dad at his dealership as my very first job, but it was so long ago, that my skills (doing the parts and service journal by hand, running a teletype out in the parts department, and drawing up forms and graphs by hand, are a tad outdated! ;)

New career as a casino dealer. - ProMT

[ In Reply To ..]
I was an MT for 20+ years and even had my own business at one time, but that was years ago when the MT field was a very lucrative career. Over the past several years, I really felt MT was winding down. I lost motivation by working even harder for less money and being so nitpicked by QA. I did not want to go back to school for anything else, so I decided to go to casino dealing school and become a Blackjack and Poker dealer. I am loving it and making way more money (in tips) than I was at the end of my MT career.

There is life after MT, and I really encourage anyone who is interested in finding something different to do so. It is not easy, but if you try, you hopefully can find something in which you are interested and be paid more.

Good luck to you in your new future job!

I am considering this as well.. - I am in S. Florida and

would love to hear more details of your transition to casino worker. I am thinking of enrolling in one of the main gaming schools here, but wondering how difficult it is to get hired once I complete the course. Private email me if you have time. Thanks!

Just curious - What casino

Just a friendly piece of advice, don't answer the above questions or send private emails unless you want your identity to be known.

I agree with SM, especially - NPC

since it appears you have a troll following you on another board.

I am not a troll - or someone trying

[ In Reply To ..]
to steal anyone's information. So now we not supposed to do any sharing through private emails?

If you don't want to email me that's fine. My main question was how easy or hard it was to get a job once you finished the school? Thanks.
Misunderstanding or misinterpretation? - NPC

I was not implying that you per se are a troll. I was merely trying to warn ProMT that since there appears to be a troll following her/him on another board (i.e., the political board, where things can sometimes get heated), she/he should not give out the name of the casino where she/he works nor reply via email because that enables people to know your name. I was just trying to help. It was not my intent to make you feel slighted or offended.
Me neither - Just curious

Geesh -- I don't even go onto the political board nor would I know who is trolling or following who.

I live near 2 casinos and have contemplated applying for cage cashier, slot attendant or an upstairs type position and simply wondered which one she went to. Chances are she's not way out here in my state anyway.

It's a shame people have to be so paranoid these days.
But if she answers you here, the troll will see it. - sm

Being careful isn't being paranoid. We need to think outside the box these days.

just last week was checking into a casino school. Whether this person responds or not, I will take this as a good omen that this might be something I could pursue. I am not that far from retirement, and it is just so hard to know whether spending money on any school at this point will pay off. At least blackjack dealer school sounds like fun and is very close to my house, so I will probably use some of my rainy day fund to sign up

What a great idea....unfortunately we do not - sm - XXX

have gambling where I am, would have to drive about 3 - 5 hours depending on what state I wanted to go to. Something to keep in mind if it ever moves closer to where I am at!

Casinos are a blight in my state. They attract - lots of unsavory types of people.

Not to mention encourage and enable gambling addictions.

That would be pretty cool to do, closest to me - sm - Anonnnnn

is 2.5 hours away, so not going to happen unless they move to the river between the states, then just an hour away, could do that. Right now supplement driving a school bus...make more doing that(salaried) that I did working 2 MT jobs this year, at less hours (about 4 hours a day, and make more a day doing that than I do all day doing the 2 IC MT jobs), very sad...though cleared $30K between the 3 jobs I do....summer's off with the one and still get a paycheck so that is quite nice.

Yes, I left - Glad of it, too

[ In Reply To ..]
I left for coding and HIM. I now make more than 70K in a very nice job. Glad I did it. Wish you luck in yours.

Life after MT can be great! sm - Ex-MT finally!!

[ In Reply To ..]
I happened to go to work for a fast food chain as an assistant general manager. Decent salary (more than I have made as an MT since early 2000s), obtainable bonuses (only up to 6K a year for now) and the best of all........great AND affordable health/vision/dental insurance (less than 400 per month for family and medical is a PPO not HMO)!

Is it hard work.. yes. However, I so enjoy being around people again!

I just changed to office work - Ex-MT

[ In Reply To ..]
Found a state job in a mental health facility, working in an office. I can say that my years of MT, working alone, figuring things out on my own have tremendously helped with my new job. I picked up everything quickly and get constant praise from work, people always saying how fast and amazing I am, lol, I tell them the speed comes from working on production so long.

I love that I changed though and I love the benefits, the fact that my check is salary and I ALWAYS get a check no matter what. Life is grand for sure:)

Kid's Career TestingApr 27, 2011
This will be quick and this will be funny.  My boy comes home from 5th grade today, explaining how they all went to computer class and answered questions to ascertain their perfect career.  (He tells me his qualifying choices are nuclear engineer, mechanical engineer, etc., -- but that's beside the point).  So, when he gets home, he and his best friend are now at home playing with this career-assigning website.  As a joke, they type in "Strongly Dislike" for every singl ...

MT Career AlternativesJun 18, 2015
Hi all, I'm wondering what my career alternatives are. I've been an MT for only a little over two years now but I have the beginning of arthritis and carpal tunnel in the same hand.  I'm only 38 and was not anticipating this problem so early... I love what I do (minus the crappy pay) and I especially love working from home. Can anyone suggest any alternatives that pay decent with my medical background? I do straight typing and have a pretty large dictionary in my autocorrec ...

By taking responsibility for the lack of security in Benghazi, I think she may have just blown her own future. Is she hoping that it will all be forgotten by 2016? What the heck was she thinking? Copyediting Or Medical Coding As A Career After MTJan 10, 2016
Hello, I do not have the money to keep spending on no where careers.  I am wondering what people think would be the better at home career for someone who is already an MT?  Someone a few years back said she was an MT and got into copyediting after.   For those who don't know, a copyeditor is kind of like a proofreader but they also look at content.  A medical coder codes procedures, etc. for billing purposes.  I have looked into both and cannot make a decision. &n ...
