Can anyone recommend a good shoe?

Posted: Aug 29, 2015

I have plantar fasciitis as well as extremely dry skin on my feet. I need to apply lotion to my feet daily and wear socks at all times when up and about in order to prevent cracking of the plantar aspects.

I bought some arch supports from the Good Feet store several years ago, but they did not help me whatsoever. I was looking at SAS shoes, but they are so expensive. Does anyone have any other suggestions as to manufacturer and type of shoe? It seems I do best with a soft supportive insole (heel), but an outwardly rigidly supportive shoe. Thank you!

foot supports which cost $350. Insurance will never pay for them. He told me that the only shoe I should wear is New Balance RUNNING shoes, because of the high arch. They are kind of expensive, but they last a long time.

Some insurance pays for the inserts - sm - XXX

just depends on the insurance and coverage. My DH's is a super plan though and not the norm as it always surprises my doctor's on what it does cover. My daughter had to have custom orthotics made, which were covered 100%. I suggest you call your carrier and see if you have coverage for this, you may be pleasantly surprised, or they cover part (80%) and you need to pay the balance. That is how they work for my eye doctor visits, though that is a flat fee they cover and not a percentage, I am responsible for the balance. They do have different coverage sometimes for the specialties.

My husband went to the ortho and ortho made him inserts. That was probably, gosh darn, 18 years ago---and he still has the same inserts that still work. They look cruddy and are a bit cracked, but they're obviously well made. He just switches them from shoe to shoe as needed, buying no special shoes to speak of, save for not ridiculously cheap shoes.

One thing (if this hasn't been mentioned) is to not walk barefooted on hard floors. He is able to wear flip flops and sandals on the days he's not on his feet a lot. He has no nighttime problems.

New Balance are indeed highly recommended by podiatrists. Another brand (sandal, but they have many different styles) I found that is comfortable beyond all belief are SAS (San Antonio Shoes) shoes. Unless they've changed, I don't think you can purchase them on line, so you would need to find the store closest to you who sells them.

They are incredibly comfortable with little to no "break in" time. Fantastic arch support, and your feet feel like they are on a cloud.

I do transcription for a podiatrist and just completed 20 dictations for him. What he recommends are Saucony or Asic shoes, and Power Step foot orthotics, which I believe you can buy over-the-counter. Not sure of the cost. Just passing on what this podiatrist recommends. Good luck. I know foot problems can be horrible!!

Shoes - My opinion

New Balance makes good, reasonably priced walking shoes. My favorite brands are Born and Clark's. Keen is a good brand as is Dansko. Just a suggestion, but instead of off the rack orthotics you might need to have some custom fit insoles made. Find a shoe store with employees who actually are able to fit shoes and who will help you make the right choice. A good pair of shoes can be pricey but worth it. With a diagnosed condition such as yours, your insurance might help to defray the cost or orthotics.

Also with plantar fascitis, went to the ortho - and prescribed both night and day

wear and it was absolutely horrible. The night boot actually hurt more than it helped, the day boot was blown up gismo and went on line to check about something to help at night. Went to Rite-Aid drug store, paid less than $30.00 for an apparatus, looks like a genie shoe, comfortable for sleeping at night and does the trick. My plantar fasciitis is not all day long, only when I first step on my foot of a morning do I have the pain so this worked extremely well for me. Am sure the ortho cost was well over $1000 for everything which did not help at all.

Day and night boots - My opinion

[ In Reply To ..]
This is a different scenario but after I had a plate and pins in my ankle for a fracture/dislocation, the doctor told me to wear my boot at night so in case I accidentally had a muscle spasm and hit the wall I wouldn't do any damage. I made a "tent" with my blankets to avoid putting pressure on my foot. Also, if I needed to get up at night to use the bathroom it was easier than trying to get myself put back together. Sorry your boot didn't do the trick, mine worked great.
Glad your boot worked, mine actually put pressure - on my leg, bad experience
[ In Reply To ..]
I am not the soundest of sleepers anyway. The material the boot was made of was irritating to my skin, had to get up the first night of wear and put on 2 layers socks and had to stuff socks down both sides because the steel plates rubbed and then did I tell you could not even turn over in bed without the darn think waking me up, heavy.

Thank you all! - FootTroubles

What I bought from the Good Feet store were orthotics, custom-made for my feet, and I was supposed to gradually increase wearing time. I never got to more than a couple hours because the pain they were causing was far more severe than the pain caused by the plantar fasciitis.

I bought several OTC semi-rigid "boots" and they did nothing. I kept "breaking through" the rigidity of the boot with whatever positioning I was doing with my foot at night. Thankfully, I got my money back with each one.

I do already have a pair of Clark's open-toed sandals that are fairly new. I put on a lighter weight sock and my right foot already feels better. If I don't improve significantly, I will go see a podiatrist; however, as with most of us, I have crappy insurance and have tried to avoid all doctors at all costs.

Again, many thanks to all.

Shoes - Runner

[ In Reply To ..]
I bought a pair of running shoes called Hoka One One (no lie) that have an almost 1 inch foam cushion. For me, it's like my foot never touches ground. I am a heavier runner and these have eliminated my foot pain while running by 75%. I can also stand to walk through stores/mall a lot better than in my previous athletic shoes. They are expensive!, but if you wait until this fall they will be on sale at RunningWarehouse.com for half price. If you want to try them on first, check out a local specialized running store. If that particular brand doesn't work for you, ask about other brands that are highly cushioned.

So I have been thinking about this post for 2 days now. Wasn't going to reply but kept thinking about you, and felt compelled to answer. My sister works in a medical office and told me they all wear Skechers, so I bought a pair and she is right! They are all I wear now. They have memory foam and are sooooo comfy. They run around $50 to $60. I buy the GoWalk model but I believe most of their shoes have memory foam insoles. I get mine at Kohl's, you can buy them online too. I'm sure there are other stores that sell them. Hope you find something that works for you, nothing worse than sore feet!!! :)

I too suffer from foot, ankle, and leg pain. By the end of the day my feet feel as if they are encased in cement. Horrible not to be able to walk. I went the Podiatry route. Made insoles, hurt like hades. I went to Kroger the other night (for those of you not from this area, grocery store). They had Miracle Copper socks for $14.99. I thought what the hell, and bought a pair. OH MY GOODNESS! after I put them on within 5 minutes my feet stopped hurting and tingling, 15 minutes later the swelling was down in my ankles and calves, and I have had them for 4 days now, and wear them 90% of the time during the day and love them. I am now trying them for the first time while typing 9 hours today. I am so glad I bought them. I too have worn NB shoes, Saucony, and Skechers. I prefer the Skechers, but they stretch out after a while and have to get new ones, unless you buy the tie kind. I love my Saucony's also, but are kind of heavy, that is why I prefer the Skechers. NB are good too, but also heavy. Hope this helps. ANd if you get the socks, I hope they help you as much as they have me. BEWARE, I was told never to get magnetic anything if you have a pacemaker or vena cava filters, etc. GOOD LUCK

I Highly Recommend Duolingo WebsiteMar 15, 2014
Stressed out and surfing the web?  I found out about a website called Duolingo, where you can take a language course - I'm learning French, started Spanish also.  It is wonderful to take your mind off your problems, and maybe is a "dementia preventative" like crossword puzzles are supposed to be. So at the end of the day (month, year), instead of just surfing the web, reading political websites, etc, you actually have something to show for it:  You know some French, can read ...

Shoe Shopping DilemmaFeb 05, 2012
About a month ago, I stopped at a shoe store I don't normally frequent.  I happened upon a pair of shoes that were very comfortable and stylish.  They were $100.  This was the most I ever paid for a pair of shoes, but after wearing the ones I walked out with for a week, I had no regrets.  I bought that pair and also ordered another pair in standard black (the store didn't have my size in stock).  The store said it would take about 2 weeks and they would ship di ...
