How many pets do you have?

Posted: Mar 24, 2011

How many animals do you have and how many of those live in your house? We already have 4 dogs and 1 cat in the house, along with several fish and a couple of hamsters. Two of our dogs are small around 15-20 lbs, one is about 30 lbs, and one basset hound at 55 lbs.  We are now getting a Rott-lab-St. Bernard mix!!!! What the heck are we thinking? LOL!! I am just curious about other households and how many animals you have inside. I keep them very clean, all on flea meds, scrub my carpets 2-3 times a month, etc. just to keep my house clean and dogs clean.

So..what about you guys? Anyone as crazy as our family? I guess I am hoping somebody else out there has a house full of furry friends and I am not going to be the only crazy one!!

Two cats-1 only indoor only (declawed-which I will never put a poor cat through again) and 1 stray that found us last summer who is indoor/outdoor and a huge German Shepard.

Love them and cant imagine life without them but honestly the hair is driving me insane and once these are gone I will do a hiatus for a while (at least that is what I swear to now LOL) and live a fur-free life for a bit. Want 2 Boston Terriers someday in the distant-distant-distant future.

Before I had these two, I had three. Big mistake! My vet warned me that two make a family, three are a pack. I ignored him and got a puppy. Life was never the same. They had major fights out of the blue, and I was the one who always wound up bloody. They would wake me up in the middle of the night, to the point I had to put them on carefully measured leashes and tie them each to a separate bedpost.

Wow..never had any fighting issues with the 4 - OP

we have now. They all sleep through the night and dont bother each other! During the day they will play and romp every now and then, but for the most part they all just look like furry rugs lying on the floor! They dont even fight with the cat! Sorry to hear you had so many problems.

Two MinPins, ages 15 and 5, and one Chihuahua Mix, age 7.

Everyone gets along. The 2 younger ones know that the other one is old, so they don't mess with her much, but they are very protective of her. They back her up when she is out in the yard.

I would LOVE to rescue another small dog but can't afford to yet.

We did have three (2 boxers and a border collie mix), but the male boxer died awhile ago. They are both inside, but my old mutt dog is nearing 17 and incontinent, so now she has to wear a diaper because I cannot have dog pee in my house--yuck! I just don't have the heart to kick her out. She has been with me far longer than my husband has. We also have two frogs and two horses. The frogs are inside and the horses are outside. :D

The last group of 3 were all within a year or 2 in age and 1 died, which I did not replace, the second died and I did replace as the third one was depressed alone. The third one died and I had to replace him because of depressed remaining dog. Now I am down to one 92-pound boxer and he is fine being the only dog, though I take him to doggy day care for a few hours every once in awhile so he can play with others. I would love to have 2 boxers again but just cannot afford it right now. House feels empty with only 1.

After many mutts and rescue dogs, I decided to spluge and bought a Samoyed. He was VERY expensive and I even had to pay for his plane ticket!

He is a beauty and such a joy, but because they are so furry he has to have special care, even the house temperature must be to his comfort!

He is United Canine Association registered (more money...) and a registered sire, though we have not "hired" him out! I don't think we really want to get into that, just want to love him.

He's a big guy, big fluff ball and quite a different temperament than mutts of past, but he's here now and I accept that and will do my best to make him happy and keep him healthy and safe.
It's almost regal... He knows he's pretty I guess!

His name is Tolstoy!

Yep, lots of animals here too - sm - Toomanypets

Three dogs, 2 big at 70-80# and one smallish at 25#; one fat indoor cat; 2 rabbits (outside), 1 fish, 12 hens (outside) and the 1 hamster just died over the weekend (hoping for no more hamsters). Something always seems to move in when one dies....I have been trying to wean it down, the previous rabbits had died last winter (was happy about 2 less animals to take care of) so what does DH do, come home one day in the Spring last year with 2 more rabbits...of course failing to check or even ask what their sexes were and of course he brought home a boy and a girl-- luckily the female was not quite ready to make babies though the boy bunny had all the equipment ready to go and tried, but she was still too young, lucky for us. They were separated immediately so no more rabbits there at least. I have informed all that I will not be taking care of these two, the only reason the last two lived so long is because I made sure they were fed and watered. Now kids are in charge and there are times those poor rabbits go a day or two without any food or water. I should do the same with the chickens, DH wanted them not me...and of course I do all the work feeding and watering them, maybe I will go on strike with them too and see how long they live (though I could never bring myself to do that). I do monitor the rabbits a bit and tell the kids to go feed/water if they have not done it on their own (rare).

We have two Harrier hounds, both about 60 pounds each and now 3 cats, one calico and two Bengal kittens, almost a year old. We started out with two rescue cats when we moved into our very first home with a mortgage, no pets before due to renting, and then moved on to one Harrier. We adopted him already grown up from a breeder in California and had him shipped (not cheap). My DH thought he was lonely and decided that another one was in order. So, another adopted adult Harrier came into our lives, from California. So for 4 years we had 2 cats and 2 dogs. One our rescue cats got sick and died and so our one cat was depressed and DH thought she was lonely. So, we started looking at maybe getting a retired Bengal to adopt as they are less expensive than kittens, as with Bengals they tell you are going to want to buy two at a time due their being so active and normal everyday cats can't seem to keep up with their energy. So, in the end, a miracle happened and we ended up adopting 2 kittens that had to be re-homed due to issues with their first home (owners didn't know what they were in for and didn't start them out correctly)for way less than 1 retired female Bengal. So, now we have a small zoo. The kittens like the dogs, the older cat wants nothing to do with the kittens and they keep their distance and the dogs have buddies who like to play and sleep with them. Our house is never dull. I have had to do more childproofing with these 2 kittens than I ever did with my two children. They seem to like sparkly things quite a bit and will climb anything and everything to get to them and they are now bigger than any other cats I have ever had at almost 9 and 13 pounds each and only 11 months old. So, all my cool stuff is put away for the foreseeable future, just like with kids again.

Do Any Of You Have Pets That.....Jul 24, 2017
Watch TV. I am sitting watching my 20 lb tuxedo kitty watch TV. He is just sitting quietly and attentively watching the news with me. My other kitty loves to sit on my lap and watch me do puzzles or video games on the computer. What I find odd is that they don't make any attempt to go after anything on the screens. But put a string or a shadow in front of them and they are off like a rocket. ...

Does Anyone Who Has Pets Ever Get New Carpeting?Aug 07, 2012
We are planning to get wall to wall for some of the rooms in the house.  One is our cat's bedroom (yes they have their own bedroom) :-)  We don't let them wander around our house at night. Anyway...I was just wondering if anyone who has pets ever gotten new carpeting and were they affected.  I read something on the internet about someone's dog developing a tumor from the chemicals used.  I've got 5 of my little critter babies and their bedroom floor is in ...

Pets And The ElderlyJul 08, 2013
Has anyone ever noticed that sometimes elderly people want a dog, cat or bird after a loved one dies? This happened with my MIL. She wanted a dog after her husband died, but she was at an age where two things were occurring: 1. The physical ability to care for the dog (walks, cleaning messes)was diminishing. 2. An age where the dog was definitely going to outlive her, which means someone in the family would have to take the dog. We did finally talk her out of it. I guess I'm bringing t ...

Pets In HeavenNov 10, 2016
i am a severe animal lover, my pets are special to me, and i agree they can touch your heart in ways a human cannot.  they do love you unconditionally, and that is a very special thing.  i know because i recently lost my 3 pound maltese who was the joy in my life for years.  i know i will miss her until i see her in heaven again.  i dont feel animals have souls, but i do think God allows them in heaven with us in some sort of way.  They teach only humans have souls and y ...

The Rapture And Our PetsOct 24, 2016
As the world keeps changing and things revealed throughout the Bible pointing to the the second coming of Christ seem to be happening more and more, the subject of the Rapture for all believers is mentioned now more than ever.  While I know this is something for all of us to look forward to, the description of being "snatched up" in a micro second and reunited with our loved ones in the sky with Jesus has always made me ask what about our pets?  They will suddenly be left alone with no ...

Pets And Stray Cat QuestionMar 03, 2011
I will try and not make it long, wanted to ask people who have had more experience with this what they think.  There is a neighborhood cat that has been around for a year or so.  Always walking yard to yard trying to catch a bird here or there.  Sweet little thing, never thought much of it as there are are a few cats that wander around.  Anyway...last week we've been having bitter cold temps (around the 10 degrees and below).  One morning we found her curled up on o ...

Casey/Cindy Anthony Family PetsJul 02, 2011
Is it just me or does it seem like the Anthony's had a LOT of pets who died and were buried in the backyard?  Our family always had pets growing up, but I don't remember them dying all the time and burying them in the backyard!  Personally, I wouldn't have my 4 year old participate in a burial for the family pet in the backyard if the youngster was attached to it. Do you think Cindy and/or Casey had something to do with their early demise? I read somewhere that some soc ...
