Does anyone who has pets ever get new carpeting?

Posted: Aug 7, 2012

We are planning to get wall to wall for some of the rooms in the house.  One is our cat's bedroom (yes they have their own bedroom) :-)  We don't let them wander around our house at night.

Anyway...I was just wondering if anyone who has pets ever gotten new carpeting and were they affected.  I read something on the internet about someone's dog developing a tumor from the chemicals used.  I've got 5 of my little critter babies and their bedroom floor is in bad shape and we want to carpet it, but now wondering if it's safe and has anyone ever had it done and were your pets okay.

Thanks

Why carpet? - KC

Just curious as to why you want carpet? With pets I'd much rather have a hard surface for easy cleaning. In fact, last year I had two of my rooms converted to wood floors, ha ha.

Sorry, I can't answer your question. I have heard little things here and there about chemicals used in laying carpets, etc., but don't know anything specific. It seems like what I had heard before had to do with glue used in laying more of the indoor/outdoor carpeting, or what they'd use in a place of business, etc. I do think that generally things are safer these days. Good luck!

The hardwood floors are badly damaged. Our feet are sticking to them when we walk. I cannot sweep easy cos the broom get stuck. The floors have an odor to them (well not really an odor, but think they tried cleaning them with something and the rooms smell not bad, but not like with carpet. Also, the side of the house sounds hollow. We don't care for hardwood floors and we think carpeting will add warmth and value to the home. Even if we were to refinish the floors the stains are so bad it would not look good and instead of stripping and staining and it still sounding hollow and cold we like carpeting instead. But now worried if it will make our kitties sick.

Maybe try... - KC

Once you narrow it down to what company you want to use, just pick their brains about what they use, or research the type/brand of carpeting yourself?

After hearing your explanation, I get why you're done with the wood floors! Having always had carpeting everywhere, I'd love to have my whole house be wood floors, especially this year when my two indoor-only cats got fleas for the first time!

not trying to change your mind about carpets.... - anon

but my kitties have a bedroom of their own too, which is already carpeted. They regurgitate hairballs, etc, as most cats do from time to time. They also go outside their "boxes" once in a great while due to stress or whatever aggravates them at the time. These "spots" are very difficult to get clean out of a carpet. and eventually the carpet will have an "odor" too that never comes out. I fully intend on changing out the carpet for at least laminate flooring that looks like hardwood, just for this reason alone! I would love to do it throughout my entire house, as the "kitty spots" are not confined to just their bedroom. I really dislike having cats and carpeting! Just something to think about. hard surface flooring is much easier to take care of than carpets.
Thank you and note to KC too - sympathetic cat woman

Reading both your posts and also doing some more research we have changed our minds on carpet. We are going with bamboo instead. It will give us that warm feeling we are looking for, and will also not run into all of the problems you both mentioned. We are more excited about this rather than carpet.

Thanks to you both for your messages.
you're welcome....and another thought.... - anon

you had mentioned the "hollow sound" in that room with the wood floors. Bamboo is a good choice, but I believe there is something you can have put underneath it to absorb the hollowness of the sound, but not sure what it is. I have been told about "cork" in the past, as well, and some of their flooring designs are pretty and look much like hardwood, as well! Just a thought. Wish I had enough money to do this now, as well. :-)

You can use large area rugs, and if you put a piece of carpet padding under them, they're just as comfy as wall-to-wall carpet, but easily removed for cleaning if necessary. That can really cozy up a room :) We did this for our unfinished basement, and had large carpet remnants cut to size. I swear it was more comfortable than our wall-to-wall upstairs!

I removed the old carpet and padding, washed the floor with Murphy's oil or compatible and filled a syringe filled with a pet odor solution and literally injected it between any opening in the wooden floor I could find. Then threw baby powder mixed with soda around and swept it all around the floor and that sure helped with the odor for a while at least and decreased the squeaky sounds when walking on it.

We have carpet and furniture warehouses in our area that sell carpet remnants of all sizes to include larger rooms, got one the size of a 14x12 foot room for a reasonable price and just threw that down using carpet tape at the corners only. Wasn't as hard or costly to replace the carpet years later. Sure was better and cheaper fix than new carpet for those little rascals.

Being a renter, it seems like most apartments have carpeting in them. Worse, they seem to always pick a light tan or off-white color, I guess because it supposedly goes with everything.

My cats aren't the only ones who are hard on carpets... I am, too! I forget to wipe my muddy feet, and I keep my mountain bike in my apartment so it won't get stolen.

What I now do that helps a lot is, I put down a large area-rug on top of the existing carpet. I got an inexpensive oriental-looking rug that covers all but about 6" from the walls. It warms up the room, it helps to insulate, and if you're upstairs, it helps to soundproof as well.

Best of all, when one of my cats yaks up a giant, disgusting hairball, the area rug is so easy to clean! I just pick up the hairball with a paper towel, and wipe off the carpet with a damp sponge. The area rug is so stain-resistant, I wonder if it's one of those "Stain-Master" carpets. However, if the hairball lands on the off-white rug, a stain is guaranteed. That rug stains even if you wipe a damp sponge on an area that has nothing on it. Must be really cheap carpeting.

Anyway, the dark-colored, patterned area rug vacuums well, cleans well, and doesn't show stains. Best of all, if it gets really dirty, I can either send it out to a rug-cleaner who will come pick it up, or I can just toss it and get another. I would say the only drawback is your doors may not clear the area rug without the bottom being planed a little bit.

I found that "Spray and Wash" for clothing works the absolute best (better than any carpet cleaner I have found) on carpet for any stains, cat vomit, coffee, juice, Kool-Aid, mud, anything. I just spray some on, dab with dry towel, and repeat until gone. My carpets look great again.

That sounds good. Just to let you know, my 18-year-old kitty recently developed chronic kidney disease and was throwing up quite a bit. Then, an on-line vet suggested trying giving her a little Pepcid with meals (about 5 mg total a day), and her vomiting stopped immediately. Apparently, the CKD causes nausea, but the Pepcid worked wonders. It also helped bring her appetite back.. She had stopped eating and lost a lot of weight.
Thanks for the Spray-N-Wash idea... I'll give it a - try. (sm)- Meerkat

I actually already use the solid Spray-N-Wash stick on laundry stains. It ALWAYS works! So I'm sure the spray would work equally well on my light, impossible-to-clean carpets. I also have a white, sort of satin-y love seat in the living room that someone barfed a hairball on the other day. :( I'm sure Spray-N-Wash (stick or spray) will work. Thanks for the great idea!

I'm glad you are concerned for your kitties' health. God bless you. Maybe this is what you were thinking about regarding carpets? Chemicals in carpets and furniture....PBDEs. See link to article for starters.

Our home had carpets over hardwood floors. We finally removed the carpeting due to fur, pet stains from our dogs and cats. Too difficult to clean them and get the odors out. Still have "linoleum" in our kitchen. Personally, I don't like the smell of new carpeting. Would it be possible to "air out" the kitty room before kitties start using it once you put in the new carpeting?

I had ALL my carpeting replaced with tile. - L&L

Frankly, I think there is no way from keeping carpet clean, and the slate tile is down FOREVER.

How Many Pets Do You Have? Mar 24, 2011
How many animals do you have and how many of those live in your house? We already have 4 dogs and 1 cat in the house, along with several fish and a couple of hamsters. Two of our dogs are small around 15-20 lbs, one is about 30 lbs, and one basset hound at 55 lbs.  We are now getting a Rott-lab-St. Bernard mix!!!! What the heck are we thinking? LOL!! I am just curious about other households and how many animals you have inside. I keep them very clean, all on flea meds, scrub my carpets 2-3 ...

Do Any Of You Have Pets That.....Jul 24, 2017
Watch TV. I am sitting watching my 20 lb tuxedo kitty watch TV. He is just sitting quietly and attentively watching the news with me. My other kitty loves to sit on my lap and watch me do puzzles or video games on the computer. What I find odd is that they don't make any attempt to go after anything on the screens. But put a string or a shadow in front of them and they are off like a rocket. ...

Pets And The ElderlyJul 08, 2013
Has anyone ever noticed that sometimes elderly people want a dog, cat or bird after a loved one dies? This happened with my MIL. She wanted a dog after her husband died, but she was at an age where two things were occurring: 1. The physical ability to care for the dog (walks, cleaning messes)was diminishing. 2. An age where the dog was definitely going to outlive her, which means someone in the family would have to take the dog. We did finally talk her out of it. I guess I'm bringing t ...

The Rapture And Our PetsOct 24, 2016
As the world keeps changing and things revealed throughout the Bible pointing to the the second coming of Christ seem to be happening more and more, the subject of the Rapture for all believers is mentioned now more than ever.  While I know this is something for all of us to look forward to, the description of being "snatched up" in a micro second and reunited with our loved ones in the sky with Jesus has always made me ask what about our pets?  They will suddenly be left alone with no ...

I will try and not make it long, wanted to ask people who have had more experience with this what they think.  There is a neighborhood cat that has been around for a year or so.  Always walking yard to yard trying to catch a bird here or there.  Sweet little thing, never thought much of it as there are are a few cats that wander around.  Anyway...last week we've been having bitter cold temps (around the 10 degrees and below).  One morning we found her curled up on o ...

Casey/Cindy Anthony Family PetsJul 02, 2011
Is it just me or does it seem like the Anthony's had a LOT of pets who died and were buried in the backyard?  Our family always had pets growing up, but I don't remember them dying all the time and burying them in the backyard!  Personally, I wouldn't have my 4 year old participate in a burial for the family pet in the backyard if the youngster was attached to it. Do you think Cindy and/or Casey had something to do with their early demise? I read somewhere that some soc ...
