Exotic pets

Posted: Sep 19, 2013

Does anyone on here have any kind of exotic pets? I would really like to get some kind of a monitor lizard, either a savannah or a nile.;

If they are anything like - xx

iguanas, they will have some very specific requirements for environment and nutrition. I have a friend who has two iguanas that receive Cadillac care (she had a large, tiled sunroom specifically outfitted for their needs built onto her house for them to live in, for example). Her vet (who specializes in exotic pets) said my friend was the first iguana owner she had encountered who took proper care of her pets. They require special food and supplements, a particular temperature and humidity range, as well as heat lamps and sun lamps, climbing trees, rocks, and any number of other things. If the lizard lives long enough to grow to mature size, it will need a large enclosure for optimum health and happiness. The vet said most people's iguanas never lived very long because they didn't get the right food and were kept in containers that were too small. It is not inexpensive to care properly for exotic pets and give them a decent life. I would recommend doing a lot of research and maybe even seeking out a vet in your area who specializes in exotic pets to learn exactly what is involved.

They are not exactly like iguanas - Nick

in that they are much more difficult to handle. (Think scale-model Komodo dragons.) But they are like iguanas in that they need the same care to temperature, lighting, humidity, etc. If I get a monitor, I would have a vet come and supervise the setting up of its room. I have done years of research in herpetology and know that these animals require a huge commitment in time and money. I would not get one for a couple of years, but ultimately would love to have one. I would ideally dedicate a small room just to the monitor and have independent controls for humidity, lighting, etc. Not an easy task, but it might be worth it.

I've been wanting a pair of rats for years. My kids are finally old enough, so maybe Santa will bring me some for Christmas!

Rats are actually quite affectionate - Nick

I have known people who had pet rats and they were very affectionate and actually kind of charming in their own way.

we had rats for years - sm

The first set we had were like cats. They were affectionate and very social. We could let them out of the cage without fear they'd hide or not know where their bed was, but after they died (lived pretty long), the next set was not as social and they never got the knack of being "free." They were more like street rats, going behind fridge, etc.

I think breeding practices makes a difference and type of rat. I would suggest researching to someone considering rats. But I really loved them.

I had a pet rat named Sug - Karlie

This was at the end of 6th grade and we had 2 rats that year, 1 had a good diet and the other not. Drew names at the end of the year and I won one. Mother not so happy with my new pet. He ate peas, carrots, very clean little pet, white one with the pink eyes. I loved my little Sug.

That is a big lizard....knew someone with an iguana - sm - XXX

which is quite a bit smaller of course. But in a huge tank, heater, lighting, etc. Pretty neat to pet and hold though, had to be careful with his tail of course. I had ferrets for years, not exactly rats though (but I had mice for years too). Miss my ferrets, had 3 in all over the course of about 12 years, maybe one day get some more who knows, have 3 dogs so not a good idea at the time.

How Many Pets Do You Have? Mar 24, 2011
How many animals do you have and how many of those live in your house? We already have 4 dogs and 1 cat in the house, along with several fish and a couple of hamsters. Two of our dogs are small around 15-20 lbs, one is about 30 lbs, and one basset hound at 55 lbs.  We are now getting a Rott-lab-St. Bernard mix!!!! What the heck are we thinking? LOL!! I am just curious about other households and how many animals you have inside. I keep them very clean, all on flea meds, scrub my carpets 2-3 ...

Do Any Of You Have Pets That.....Jul 24, 2017
Watch TV. I am sitting watching my 20 lb tuxedo kitty watch TV. He is just sitting quietly and attentively watching the news with me. My other kitty loves to sit on my lap and watch me do puzzles or video games on the computer. What I find odd is that they don't make any attempt to go after anything on the screens. But put a string or a shadow in front of them and they are off like a rocket. ...

Does Anyone Who Has Pets Ever Get New Carpeting?Aug 07, 2012
We are planning to get wall to wall for some of the rooms in the house.  One is our cat's bedroom (yes they have their own bedroom) :-)  We don't let them wander around our house at night. Anyway...I was just wondering if anyone who has pets ever gotten new carpeting and were they affected.  I read something on the internet about someone's dog developing a tumor from the chemicals used.  I've got 5 of my little critter babies and their bedroom floor is in ...

Pets And The ElderlyJul 08, 2013
Has anyone ever noticed that sometimes elderly people want a dog, cat or bird after a loved one dies? This happened with my MIL. She wanted a dog after her husband died, but she was at an age where two things were occurring: 1. The physical ability to care for the dog (walks, cleaning messes)was diminishing. 2. An age where the dog was definitely going to outlive her, which means someone in the family would have to take the dog. We did finally talk her out of it. I guess I'm bringing t ...

Pets In HeavenNov 10, 2016
i am a severe animal lover, my pets are special to me, and i agree they can touch your heart in ways a human cannot.  they do love you unconditionally, and that is a very special thing.  i know because i recently lost my 3 pound maltese who was the joy in my life for years.  i know i will miss her until i see her in heaven again.  i dont feel animals have souls, but i do think God allows them in heaven with us in some sort of way.  They teach only humans have souls and y ...

The Rapture And Our PetsOct 24, 2016
As the world keeps changing and things revealed throughout the Bible pointing to the the second coming of Christ seem to be happening more and more, the subject of the Rapture for all believers is mentioned now more than ever.  While I know this is something for all of us to look forward to, the description of being "snatched up" in a micro second and reunited with our loved ones in the sky with Jesus has always made me ask what about our pets?  They will suddenly be left alone with no ...

Pets And Stray Cat QuestionMar 03, 2011
I will try and not make it long, wanted to ask people who have had more experience with this what they think.  There is a neighborhood cat that has been around for a year or so.  Always walking yard to yard trying to catch a bird here or there.  Sweet little thing, never thought much of it as there are are a few cats that wander around.  Anyway...last week we've been having bitter cold temps (around the 10 degrees and below).  One morning we found her curled up on o ...

Casey/Cindy Anthony Family PetsJul 02, 2011
Is it just me or does it seem like the Anthony's had a LOT of pets who died and were buried in the backyard?  Our family always had pets growing up, but I don't remember them dying all the time and burying them in the backyard!  Personally, I wouldn't have my 4 year old participate in a burial for the family pet in the backyard if the youngster was attached to it. Do you think Cindy and/or Casey had something to do with their early demise? I read somewhere that some soc ...
