What do you think of stores being open on Thanksgiving?

Posted: Nov 22, 2012

I can see that people in the medical field are necessary, but I think retail people should not be forced to work on Thanksgiving to increase the big store profits.

Years ago, we had a huge conflict here and eventually voted on a city ordinance allowing stores to remain open on Sunday.  At that time, I thought it was a good idea because I had to work Saturdays and needed the time to take care of business.

I think this camping outside of the stores and people actually getting hurt trying to get in is just plain nutty.

Anyone going out to get a really great deal?

No way. - RC

I'd rather pay regular prices and have a peaceful shopping trip.

And of course, now we can do almost all of it online!

I'd like Christmas and Thanksgiving PAID holidays for everyone... - wheres_my_job

Yes, I know, some people HAVE to work on holidays. But people in retail? C'mon, NOT necessary. PAID Thanksgiving and Christmas for everybody - yeah, these companies can afford it - go back and read "A Christmas Carol" by Dickens, all you cheapskate Big Box Scrooge stores!!!!!!

Also, a shout out to WalMart workers who are fed up - c'mon get that nationwide strike going, lots of people outside retail support you. There should be no such thing as "working poor." If you work, you deserve a decent standard of living, paid holidays, etc.

they are paid holidays...by punching the time clock. - nmsg

Black Friday. - Sigh.

Taking my mom out Friday, but not for the early-hour mega deals, though. And I put a rule in place years ago that if I cannot find a parking spot, then too bad, not driving around, just not shopping there. She doesn't really need to shop, but Mom likes to see the insanity, so I take her. Sigh. Karma better reward me well for this. : )

As for Black Friday on Thursday? I prefer no. I used think midnight openings were ridiculous. But, on the other hand, I guess there are those who could use the holiday pay, or people without family who would not mind working.

Agree with No Way 100% and also... - me

I absolutely hate stores being open on holidays and even Sundays for that matter.
Everyone is entitled to at least Thanksgiving and Christmas. When I was growing up, nothing was open on holidays and Sundays and I loved it. Those were FAMILY days. Wish things could go back to the way they were.

Ahh, those were - the days

[ In Reply To ..]
You actually had to make sure you had gas in your car on Saturday or the day before a holiday because there were no gas stations open on Sunday or holidays. Corporate greed won out and look at the world now.

I think they should be closed. - And this business of Black Friday shopping startin

late Thanksgiving night or at midnight is crazy! My daughter (in college and working in retail) has to be up at 3:30 a.m. in order to get to work by 5:00 a.m. She will be going to bed before I even finish working tonight. No Thanksgiving dinner here today. Had she at least gotten scheduled for the midnight shift, we could have spent some time together and had dinner. Oh well, maybe next year will be better.

...there are actually people who PAY people to sit in line waiting for the doors to open. One woman paid someone $200 to "save" a spot in line for her for the bargain. I don't blame the woman who got paid the $200. She seriously needed the money, and all she asked was to have a turkey dinner while she was in line.

Okay, so you have $200 to throw out the window for what kind of a bargain?

reselling the retailer - moneymoneymoney

Have you taken a look at eBay lately? People go to these kinds of sales to grab as many sales as possible, then resale the items on eBay for at least double their investment. Same with couponing. Item limits are being enforced even at grocery stores because people are buying low and reselling high. So, if your profit margin is high enough, maybe some people can throw away $200 here or there.

People used to do that during the gas-rationing lines - of the 1970s. Some people were getting $20/hr to

drive someone's car to the line, wait in it, and then put gas in the car.

Makes me laugh that someone would pay $200 to hold a place in line for a "bargain" in a store. After all, if you have $200, then you can probably afford to pay regular price for the item, and skip the line.

Black Friday is just another fake "holiday event" made up by the big retail companies, and fueled by greed and a general lack of intelligence.

yes...and I went on UTube yesterday just to see - anon

if there were any videos of any of the black friday events. Walmart was one of them and Victoria's Secret! Fights, chaos, pushing, shoving, people passing out, police called, near riot situations, angry people! It is unbelievable how people act over a few dollars off on a phone or a pair of panties, for pete's sake! It is one reason why I stay home and will NEVER attend a black friday event. I don't believe these are truly "sales" anyway...they jack the price up on any given item a month prior, then advertise the same item "on sale" for these types of events for the regular price they should have originally charged anyway. People are being duped, and too duped to know it...either that or they are just "looking for a fight" anyway. The very ones that go to these events are the ones who over-react in any situation and seem to be looking for their five seconds of fame, hoping to get on somebody's cell phone video and on UTube. disgusting.

A reader's comment in today's paper...sm - Seems like a good idea.

...in response to an article about the Thursday night sales, she wrote (paraphrasing), why not start the holiday shopping season at Halloween? This way the shopping can be done before Thanksgiving, and Thanksgiving can again be celebrated with family and friends.

Hobby Lobby StoresJul 01, 2014
Have you noticed when you are in a Hobby Lobby store (for those who have actually spent time in one), they play Christian music over their music system?  I find it very soothing and often enjoy it so much that I have bought several of the CDs they are playing.  This is still a free country - just as we are free to get out of transcription and find another line of work, so the employee of Hobby Lobby is free to find another craft store or another line of work. This is a free count ...

Study:Chicago Criminals Avoid Gun Stores, Shows,Aug 31, 2015
As for specifics regarding sources for purchasing guns, some of the inmates indicated that gangs have individuals with a Firearm Owners Identification Card who buy guns then sell them to gang members. Others indicated using “corrupt cops” who seize guns then “put them back on the street.” The inmates made clear they do not walk into gun stores to buy guns. Which proves a point Breitbart News, Gun Owners of America, and other gun rights groups have made for years; namely, that backgro ...

ThanksgivingOct 10, 2011
I know it's a little early but i'm a planner.  What do you usually do at Thanksgiving?  This will be new for me as it is now just me and my 10-y/o son.  In the past he'd usually go hunting with his dad and I'd cook/bake all day.  They'd come home with any "wayward" buddies for dinner.  My parents live 4 hours away and I'm not really too keen on just sitting around staring at eachother or the TV (as what happens with any other visit). Any id ...

So How Was Everybody's Thanksgiving?Dec 01, 2013
On Thanksgiving I cooked for my cats, then worked and ran out of work after 4 hours and watched TV and took PTO.  We got together the day after and I spent the day with my sister's family.  I can't believe how big my great-great-nieces and nephews are getting.  The oldest is 4, the youngest is just under 7 months.  I have a hard time believing how grown up everybody is and realizing we (my sister and I) aren't even the old ones anymore, the kids ...

I know we often disagree on this board, but I hope that everyone -- liberal, conservative or in between -- has a wonderful, safe and happy Thanksgiving. If you have no family, cook a meal and invite a neighbor or someone who also has no family to share your meal with you. It might wind up being your best Tha ...
