Has anyone here permanently deleted their FB account?

Posted: Jan 7, 2015

I'm thinking of deleting my account.  This isn't due to any kind of drama or anything like that.  I only use my facebook to communicate with family and a few friends in other states and to share pictures and updates about our kids and family.  I'm sure part of me will miss that, but I am considering deleting it.  I often go to it expecting to spend 10 minutes at most, and an hour goes by.  Any advice?  Thanks in advance! :)

yes, don't miss it - at all

Just the idea that employers can look into your FB account is enough, too intrusive for me. The main reason I left was I could see how everybody lies about what is really going on in their lives, like how my 50-something friend's lives were suddenly glamorous when I knew full well they were not; like when somebody got a new job - "Yay for me" but forgot to mentioned got fired from the original one! Took everyone right back to Junior High School, competing for the same popularity that Jr High brings. The beginning of the dumbing down of America.

Just make your FB contacts 'friends only', and - then employers cant snoop.

One of the worst features is there is no button to make all previous profile and cover photos private. I have had a fb since 2009 and take a ton of pictures. I have hundreds of cover and profile pictures that are set to private, and I don't have the time to go through them one by one, making them all private. I feel FB could do so much better on their privacy settings. I might set up a blog someday where I can write about our family and post pictures, mostly just to keep for our children.

I found it got me into a terrible mood whenever I went on. I thought I'd miss everybody, but truth be told there are only 2 people I miss (my son and daughter-in-law), and a couple that I wonder what's going on in their lives because they were always all about drama. I did go back and check once or twice...just to wish I hadn't.

I've intended to permanently delete mine twice, but - both times I ended up going

back to it. I am seriously thinking about deleting again now. It is easy to waste a lot of time on there, and I never trust their settings to keep things as private as I want them to be, so I hardly ever post anyway. I use blogspot to post photos because I feel it is a little safer.

permanently delete your FB account. However, you can deactivate it. I always deactivate mine whenever I've applied for jobs and/or have an upcoming job interview. I agree with the rest of you, though. It is a waste of time and is like being back in junior high. I find my "friends" are either complaining or bragging, both of which I hate. Unfortunately, for me, FB is about the only way to keep up with my nieces and nephews in other states.

Two ways to delete FB - clyde

[ In Reply To ..]
There are 2 ways to delete a FB account:

1. "Unfriend" all of your friends and then deactivate your facebook.
2. Deactivate your facebook. After a specified period of time (I think it's 6 months) if you haven't gone onto Facebook it automatically deletes your account.

Thanks, Clyde! I did not know that! - nm

Yikes! Perish the thought! ;) Facebook has - all but replaced email for me.

[ In Reply To ..]
All I ever do with my email inbox anymore is just go in and delete spam. If I need to send a private message to someone that I don't want my other friends to read, I just message them on FB.

Also, we all upload lots of photos and videos, and on FB they play instantly - no more having to download large files from email in order to see the video.

I will miss sharing pictures the most... - Goodbye FB

[ In Reply To ..]
I permanently deleted it last night. I did enjoy sharing pictures of our family with family and friends. At the same time when I was growing up in the "old days" in the 80s, I don't remember our family sharing so many family photos with friends and family. My list of friends was down to 90 with most of them being cousins, etc. as my Grandma had a big family, eight kids. Anyway, overall I think I will see positive improvements in my life with it gone because admittedly I would go there with a plan to stay for 10 to 20 minutes and end up there for over an hour. I was so easily distracted by it. There are other websites I can use for recipes and crafts. I think deleting it was right for me, and life will be much better without it : )

Exactly! I dont know what I would ever do if Facebook - went away. All my pictures are there

and it's how I keep in touch with relatives far away. It has been a Godsend, talking to people I haven't seen in years.

outrage by family and friends, who told me I would then never be able to see pictures or hear news about family events.

My feeling is if I have to see pictures or hear about events via FB as some part of a mass post, it's not important enough for me to pay attention to. FB reminds me of those old "Christmas letters" that people used to send through the mail bragging about or making things up to seem more successful or important.

I don't miss FB.

That's a good way of looking at it :) - MT4

I also feel that if someone truly matters to someone, they will find a way to share whatever important events, pictures, etc. that they feel the person is missing out on by not being on FB. In my status when I let people know I was going to be permanently deleting it, I said I no longer prefer to use FB to communicate to others, and I gave my phone number (that we will always have through google voice), and my e-mail address that I've had for about 10 years and plan on keeping. I feel happy that I finally broke away from it. It was almost like a trap that I would fall into on a daily basis, checking and rechecking, posting, liking, and sharing. I do feel liberated without it! :) I know getting rid of it isn't for everyone, but I feel it will be a positive thing for me. :)

I think a lot depends on who uses FB, and HOW - they choose to use it. (SM)

I keep my contacts to friends only. We don't really use it for "bragging". Instead, good news (new job, new baby, school accomplishments, thoughts for the day, etc.) are shared. We also can share our not-so-good experiences. There's a difference between commiserating and whining. The whiny Debbie Downers get unfriended pretty quickly. Mostly, we use it to know each other better than we could if we only saw each other once a week, or once a month. All my friends live in town; I'm an MT and can't afford to live in town, so for me it's been a valuable tool for "staying in the loop".

Impromptu gatherings or parties can be broadcast amongst us in seconds. Or, last-minute cancellations. Word-of-mouth recommendations can be given for anything - a hairdresser, a handyman, a restaurant, even tips on if there are any parking spaces left.

Many of my friends are artists, photographers, musicians, and other highly creative people. I love that they can post photos or videos of their latest work on FB.

There are downsides to FB, but most of us have gotten pretty good at either disabling those glitches, or working around them. For me, the upside of a social media site like Facebook FAR OUTWEIGHS any downsides.

Still, different strokes for different folks. I have some friends who not only don't have Facebook, they don't even have computers. I even know a few people without phones - the only way to communicate with them is to write a letter! We all manage to stay in touch, but I prefer the fast way to the snail-mail way. I also DETEST telephones, and rarely answer mine. Everyone knows the best way to contact me is on FB, second-best is by email. Telephoning? Talk to my answer-box. ;)

Nah, and I'll tell you why - Mary

I am terrible about the phone and about email, but I am awesome at staying in touch with everyone, including my grown kids and their families, on Facebook.

I tell my husband, it is like having a big ole cookout in our backyard any time I want. If I want to touch base with all our friends, I can do that instantly. If I want some solitude and quiet, I just don't go online. If we have news or photos to share, boom, there ya go. Saves us money on Christmas cards as well. And, when bad things happen, for example, I have a lupus or depression flareup, I can message someone supportive and almost immediately get the kind of uplifting, positive feedback I need. If I need to rant about something, boom, there we go. I also do a lot of community service/volunteering types of things and find ways to do that online (for example, giving free stuff to needy folks). I do admit, however, that I tend to be addicted and have to police myself from (a) using FB too frequently and for too long, and (b) exposing our entire lives on Facebook. When my husband broke his knuckle in a cycling accident, everyone knew about it that night before bed. The next day he calls me and says, how did all my coffee buddies know about my arm before I got there? LOLOLOL!!!! They had brought him get well cards and roses as a joke!

P.S. It is a great way to find out what's going on in my daughters' lives. I get to know them so much better and can keep in touch.
P.P.S. I am also able to stay in touch with my uncle who lives in TX and whom I haven't seen since I was a baby. Turns out we have so much in common. Also my cousins, even one who lives in Saudi Arabia!

You are 100% right! I have cousins on the - other side of the world, too. (SM)

[ In Reply To ..]
Not only can we communicate instantly (and for FREE!) on FB, without the delay that often exists with email, but it will even TRANSLATE for those who don't speak English. I love it when I'm just about to go to bed, and I get an early-morning sunrise photo from a cousin living half a world away.

I guess the best feature of Facebook for me is, it's FUN.

And I'm so glad I did! I was mostly on there for my family and old friends from high school. Since deleting it, my relationship with my kids and their spouses has been so much better. I thought that by posting about my day on social media that I was "talking" to them. It turns out, actually picking up the phone and talking is much more genuine and I get to find out what's actually going on in their lives (rather than just what they don't mind the world knowing). I much prefer the personal connections I have now with my family and friends over the "form letter" type relationship I had over Facebook.

Never had it, never will. - Life goes on.

No need to miss it. There's email, texting, online chats, good ole fashioned phone calls and visits, even snail mail. I'm with the other poster who prefers real life encounters since I think virtual "reality" is an oxymoron, but that's just me. I also absolutely cherish my privacy.

Why not give it a try for 6 months or so? You can always open another account later on if you feel the need to.
