Wow...one meal for $10? Yikes, that's a lot! You could have bought a lot of food at the grocery store for $10 that would have lasted much longer than meal.

not really. It was a lot of food. Besides what fun is life - if you cant treat yourself once in a while

[ In Reply To ..]
we never go out to eat anymore. We can't afford to. I'm back in school and my husband is training right now to join the Navy. It will be a while before we can start eating out again. This was a fun little reprieve.

$10 - Another MT

Sorry, I disagree. $10 can buy a lot of food to prepare at home that would last more than one meal and be a heck of a lot healthier than deep fried foods and soda.

I have a hard time understanding how eating unhealthy, greasy food that is expensive relates to fun. Just me I guess, because I hear that a lot of people talk about the "treat" of going out to eat.

I personally don't like eating food anyone else has made. How do I know their hands were clean, they used safe cooking methods, etc. I also like knowing what exactly is in my food.

And yes, $10 would be several meals for my family of five. Brown rice, fresh steamed broccoli or green beans or peas, etc. and a small portion of lean meat, usually chicken or fish costs WAY less than $10! I'd have money for some fresh eggs, mushrooms, scallions for a breakfast omelet and some bulk popcorn to pop on the stove for a snack. That $10 could feed my family easily for a whole day or more.

We don't buy prepackaged foods and we buy a lot of things in bulk (flour, sugar, brown rice, spices, etc) so they are cheaper. I feed 5 of us for around $300 a month, up to $350 when I buy a lot of meat to freeze. Yes, it can be done but takes preparation, canning/jarring/freezing when fresh is available and less expensive.

Sorry to be so long-winded but fast foot/eating away from home is just something I have a hard time understanding. I see no value in it whatsoever; nutritional, monetary or otherwise.

Will you come cook for me? - Pleeeeze!

My children are 25, 22 and 12 and all very healthy and active. They don't want fast or restaurant food, and are all old enough to get it themselves if they wanted it.

They were raised to eat to live, not live to eat. We eat to nourish and fuel our bodies. We don't eat for some sort of mental satisfaction that other people seem to crave.

You all can go back to your cheese curls, diet soda and bonbons now.

Me? I heading to the kitchen to fix fresh scallops in garlic, spinach salad and fresh peaches for dessert. And guess what...all things my 12-year-old asked to have for dinner.

Nice! Wish I could afford scallops. My kids ask, but no can do... - nm

Is $10 or more. $10 dont even go far at Aldis anymore unless you plan on eating just can goods. Besides, its good to treat your kids every now and again; give the mom a break from cooking.

Meat - Another MT

[ In Reply To ..]
Ewwww...no buying meat at a grocery store. You buy a whole cow/pig/goat/deer from a farm and put it in the freezer. You buy from a fresh fish market in bulk and freeze.

There are alternatives to the grocery store.

Again, they take a little extra work and time I guess most are not willing to put in. That's okay for them, not for me or my family. That little extra time and work lets me rest assured I know what is going into our bodies.

As for canned goods, we only eat what WE can/jar. That way we know what's in there and how long it's been on the shelf. Again, time and effort.

Why do treats have to be food? I just don't understand that mind set at all.

I love cooking for my family, not something I want a break from.

Cheapskates? - Another MT
[ In Reply To ..]
Because we like to eat healthy and know what's going into our bodies? How on earth does that makes us cheapskates?

Feeding a family does not have to break the bank. Why should I buy something I can make or grow myself, and know exactly what I'm putting into our bodies?

Please explain how this makes me and my family cheapskates? I would really like to hear the answer to this one!

I wish I could buy part of a cow or pig, wish I had enough freezer space. No farms close to me and the cost is just too much. I hate eating store-bought meat. Ever watch Food Inc? Seen those cows, pigs and chickens? I will never eat chicken again. I buy grass-fed hamburger online, and fish where I can. You're not a cheapskate. I watch Extreme Cheapskates, and those people dumpster dive for their meals or eat baked pig heads. To each their own.

It would take my family a while to eat even half a cow--sm - anon
[ In Reply To ..]
I do not think we would eat half a cow in a year. I would love to buy a whole lamb but, the quality stuff still would cost more than $10.

My family also likes healthy food. We eat raw kale salads, little meat, green smoothies, etc., etc. but, it is not cheap and we all still love junk food too. To us it is a treat because it is something we do not do very often. We know what good food tastes like, we grow many of our own vegetables, the only canned products we buy are canned tomatoes (our production is low) and coconut milk but we also grab a sausage biscuit every now and then from McDs. I wish I had remembered about the popcorn chicken today.
A whole cow, pig, goat or deer for $10!!?!? - nm

Correct! Just adding that ... - sm
[ In Reply To ..]
A "family-sized" pack of meat contains meat enough for a family of about 25, if not more.

An adult "portion" of meat is the size of a pack of playing cards, not a chicken breast, not a steak, and not even a pork chop.

And that is American portions, as in still-unhealthy sizes. Elsewhere, meat portions are a fraction of that and are not seen at every meal.

Mostly, what Americans eat is just garbage. Sugary, gelatin filled yogurt products, cookies, crackers, BREAD BREAD AND MORE BREAD, pastries, macaroni, blobs of pasta, "I can't believe people think this is butter," Cool Whip, canned soup, meat "helpers," Wishbone and Hidden Valley salad dressings, hotdogs, extender-filled sausage, frozen meals, pasturized processed cheese-like, rancid nuts and snack mixes, and all those nutritionless sugary and diet drinks. It is all the lowest quality material extended with fat, sugar, and thickeners, artificially flavored and pumped full of preservatives. PRINGLES! They aren't even potatoes! And let's not forget Cheetos.

What you might not realize is that it all ... stinks. It tastes bad, but it literally stinks. When you eat that, you smell like it, too.

Not making that up, either.

With all due respect, I don't think the OP's post was speaking to those who can afford - scallops or

or Brown Rice ruin your day. Unfortunately, for those of living actual lives, we don't have time to slaughter cows and can all of our own food. My time is actually worth something. I don't eat fast food as a rule, but once in a while, but I do cook 95% of our meals and I spend about $300 a week. My kids and husband would laugh me out of town if I served brown rice and steamed vegetables for dinner. Tonight we are having homemade butternut squash ravioli with Bolognese sauce I made about a month ago and froze. We will have steamed broccoli on the side. To each his own. By the way, if we had a Sonic here, I just might take advantage of that deal for lunch.

$300 a week?!?! - sm

[ In Reply To ..]
How many kids do you have? I could not imagine your grocery bill. I'm assuming you buy in bulk and as healthy as you can and use coupons (I hope). Or else hubby has a big income! It's just me and hubby in my household so I'm lucky I don't have kids to feed. I could not do it! I spend $100 at Aldi and we eat for 2 months. 2 people 3 meals a day for 2 months. I only buy milk/bread every week. I don't buy soda, chips, candy, etc either. Seriously, God bless you woman to afford that! WOW! :-)

What a wonderful response!!! - anon

It warms my heart to see somebody respond to a post like this! We spend $300-$400 a month for a family of 6 (with dietary issues) and that will be cut down some more soon so I understand where you are at and I love your attitude.
Aw thanks. Didn't want u to think I was being sarcastic :-) - sm

I had to check that number again because at first I thought $300 was misread by my MT-numbed brain LOL

I didn't want to be a negative Nellie, too much of that on this board lately. Sometimes posts can be misunderstood and not taken as they are. But I was sincerely being kind.

Hopefully you can cut your grocery bill down. Good luck :-)
