First grader not able to focus, wrote about this awhile

Posted: Nov 2, 2014

I tried to find the message and answers but unable to do so. One person was very informative about a child she knew, perhaps related? One person talked about a test to give a child to find out what he knew, how to learn, etc. and I need some more input if possible. The mother has tried to and the only thing they did was test the child to see if he spoke English, yes to that but he is not focusing. I told the mother every school system should have something in effect to help students because seems now so many children are having various issues, whether autism, learing disabilities, etc. and I think the mother told nothing was offered at this child's particular school. Any input? Thanks. ;

School services and pediatrician - Since when do 1st graders "focus"

[ In Reply To ..]
First graders are not supposed to "focus." That is why they are first-graders instead of nuclear physicists. Their attention span us very short. They learn best through play and activity.

If the school has nothing to offer, the child's pediatrician should be consulted. They know exactly what to do.

Are you, by chance, the same person who posts constantly about the behavior and learning problems you discover in other peoples' kids? If so, how does that happen?

My suggestion is that you refrain from meddling if you cannot remember appropriate solutions for their problems. Barring that, perhaps you could print out the threads or write down the recommendations ... "can't focus ... call pediatrician"; "can't sit still ... call pediatrician"; "can't hear ... call pediatrician"; all other problems ... call pediatrician."

Sorry if this sounds cranky, but this same thing over and over is getting old. It makes me think someone is posting repetitively just to have something to talk about.

Why so snide. If you do not want to contribute - then just keep your mouth closed

I come here quite often, to talk about cats, a semi-feral and one that was found recently and my own. There are plenty of others here who give excellent advice and then some who just want to be nasty. I guess that is where you fit. The mother said "unable to focus" because he will not sit still, the kids talk about him instead of playing with him, he disrupts the room talking when the teacher is speaking, runs around in the room during the school day, does not complete any tasks the teacher asks him to, will not walk in line to the cafeteria, the teacher has to hold onto him or else he strays into another room, just leaves. The child does not even wipe his behind during the day and he is getting rashes all over his backside from the BMs. Cleaning himself seems not to matter. The teacher thought this child had never been to kindergarden, much less pre-K and pre-pre-K if there is such a thing as he has. He is not an imbecile but something is going on with him. The mother ASKED her doctor about him, the doctor said he was ok. I do not know if pediatrician or not. If you call that normal then I would hate to see any kids you raise(d). The mother called ME last night, asking about what could be wrong. I thank the good Lord I had an aunt who lived to almost 90. I could call and ask her most anything, she was a wealth of knowledge. Had she still been around I would have called her regarding this. Sorry I did not write down all that I was told last time and when researching back could not find. If that is the worst thing I do in my life, then I will be fine. Just to let you know, meddling is when you stick your nose in not being asked. If not told and asked about this issue, would never know in the first place. The woman next door to me has 2 sons. The only thing I know about her children (after her living next door for 10 years) is they are both in college now. It is a sad world when a person asks for advice only to get a reply like yours. Please don't try to "help" me anymore.

No focus in first - grade

I agree with the poster who said first graders focus time is very short! Especially first grade boys.

My son had a very difficult time throughout school and actually had an aide assigned to redirect him back to his work. He took in everything; sounds, smells, movement, and just couldn't stay on task. It didn't help that it was all work sheets, or regurgitating what the teacher 'taught' on some kind of test. So boring!

These boys need hands on learning, they need to be able to move around and take breaks. It was actually in my son's IEP that he be able to take a break and walk around in the hallway and then go back to the classroom. It helped get the wiggles out so he could have some kind of focus.

Eventually, as he got older and the work more involved, we decided to take a different route. He did his last two years of high school at home in an online, self paced school. He could take breaks, sleep in if he needed more rest and move whenever he wanted too. It was a good solution for him in the end and he graduated on time.

I truly think we need more schools that provide an alternative to the traditional sit in your seat, lecture, book study and regurgitate on a test. My son's best teachers and the classes he enjoyed the most were the creative teachers who got students involved and moving and participating in some way.

My advice is to get an IEP so that he can take breaks and move around or have an instructional aide to help out.

Good luck!

What you are describing now is not - a "focus" problem.

You initially said the child had a "focus" problem. Now you've expanded it considerably. Running around the room, wandering off, ostracization, and personal hygiene issues are not "focus."

Why didn't you say that to begin with?

I said what the mother said, she said - "not focused." Like I told the above pos

I am not with the child 24/7. I do not have the teacher accosting me after school each day complaining about the child not being able to "focus," not stay on tasks, wandering off, disruptive, being like a "tornado," his mother said but as others here put it, "a normal boy." Sorry to not be able to satisfy a bunch of twits by using a correct medical term, I used what the child's mother said. Another poster talked about perhaps some chaos at home, needing to fix that before medicating a child. I have no idea where that came from. The mother has 4 children total, 3 excel and are in magnet schools so I guess that tosses that theory out the door. And your remarks helped out how?

The mother may have said focus, but she also told you about everything else, and that is not focus.

By saying only focus at first, you drove everyone to respond as they did. When you didn't like the responses, you came back with "yes, but" and revealed the rest of it.

If you had disclosed all of what you knew to begin with, it would not seem so manipulative or been so aggravating. You seem to orchestrate dissention so you can complain about it.
When I first posted said had written about this - prior, tried to find the responses

If it was taken down, you would have had to do it, because you were the OP. Any nasty responses would have been removed individually by the poster or moderator.

I have seen many taken down before by the - moderator, just the entire post

I didn't say this kid had chaos. I said IF there is chaos in the home, that needs to be fixed. I stated it as a general point that parents need to consider.

And just because the other kids excel, it doesn't mean there's no chaos. Divorces, boyfriends moving in, more babies. It also doesn't mean there's no abuse.

Agree - About 1st Graders

I get so tired of people thinking something is wrong with their kid because they can't focus. Especially little boys. They're boys, and they are wired differently and have more energy to burn off. I get really angry when people drug the poor little things.

Or maybe things are bad at home, and the kid is bouncing off the walls as a result. Chaos in the home is a disaster for kids. How about fix things at home before medicating the little ones?
