Not completely sold on - mammograms Posted: Nov 24th, 2019 - 11:35 pm In Reply to: I - agree
or maybe it's the healthcare providers' level of skill I'm so skeptical of anymore. I'm all for double checking something when they want to be absolutely sure everything is okay and will advise repeating a mammo for a better view. But for pete's sake, don't they realize there's risk involved with increased exposure to radiation, especially after 7 of them!!
I'm convinced my aunt was put at risk by this sort of practice - undergoing too frequent mammograms and being exposed to a lot of radiation each time - every 6 months for nearly 2 yrs, because of a "suspicious area." Not only was it costly financially for her, but she ended up developing cancer. She had no risk factors at all, except increased exposure to radiation for multiple views each time at those 6-month visits.
I've also had some "suspicious areas" for which 6-month mammograms were advised and I refused. Well, that was over 20 yrs ago and nothing suspicious has ever appeared since then. Makes you wonder what's really going on here.
