This happens every summer here. It is a way of life for me too and I'm so tired of choking on the smoke year after year. There has been no clear cutting for years as they won't allow any logging at all. That's what is making the fires worse. They keep filing lawsuits to stop logging of any dead trees, so they just stay "natural" and become an inferno whenever there is a lightning strike. The forest are loaded with dead trees packed in like sardines in a can.
