The healthy trees and the new baby trees would get some sunlight and would not back packed together like sardines in a can. Pictures from the 1880s show a lot healthier forests than today because logging was allowed to thin out the trees. Where I live, there are more dead trees than live ones and they should have been thinned out and used for lumber and firewood years ago. Yes, lightning starts the fires but the dead trees are so close together now that they are just fuel waiting for the first lightning strike to start an inferno.
