Why aren't we using this

Posted: Jul 17, 2017

With all the wildfires we have in this country, loss of life, property and the toll on wildlife and environment, why aren't we using this as a resource.  Seems to be there should be funds appropriated for the use of this aircraft.  I know departments only have so much funds to work with and maybe our federal government needs to have an emergency fund to allow this to be used.  It would surely outweigh the cost of life, property and the environmental costs sustained by our current method of fighting these fires.

just my opinion.

Well, there's the problem! Fires burn in square miles and they're trying to put out fires in kilometers X square miles. Confusion!

They have been replaced by people who want to save the trees.

approved. Global is running into the same bureaucratic BS. BTW the Forest Service has approved a DC-10 for fire service. One helped extinguish a fire very near my home last Friday.

When I lived in NM, Forest Service was using modified WWII bombers to carry the load!

I'm very glad to hear that and that your - home was spared

We would be so much better off if some of this red tape could be taken away when it comes to stuff like this. Asking for a miracle though, I guess.

DC-10 can still handle wildfires at less than half the - cost...

747 SuperTanker receives federal approval – Wildfire Today

Look up what all the USDA handles, including food stamps. It's incredible.

This is a very lopsided article. It does not represent - counter arguments at all.

Let me take up the side that is missing (courtesy of my husband).

He's been watching the bombers work several fires in our area of late. What good is a HUGE line of retardant or water if the fire is not moving in a straight line? The head of a fire is composed of lots of fingers. It is rarely going to line up perfectly straight. So the line the super tanker is laying down will go largely to waste. AND it will use up huge quantities of water and retardant that might be used by smaller planes to hit specific spots. Imagine you are building a house. You have a couple normal nail guns that run off your compressor. You can use that compressor to power them and nail all day long, nail after nail, board after board. Your friend comes to help and he brings his super nail gun. It will empty your air compressor in one shot and the compressor will take almost a minute to refill. What’s more, this super-gun shots one massive nail the equivalent of 8 nails. You try to tell him you don’t need a super nail. You are only putting 2 - 3 nails in the end of each board. The super gun will only slow you down. He gets indignant. Bigger is better he says.

Look, that requirement from the gvt for 3 to 5 thousand gallons was written by the organization that uses these planes to fight fires all the time. They know what size is effective and what isn’t.

Oh and also the larger air tankers disrupt Air Attack operations while they make their pass. They don’t fit well in the normal pattern because they are so cumbersome. Plus in rough terrain the 747 isn’t going to be able to get down low enough for a good drop.

Thanks for - sharing that. nm

We should also have more funds appropriated for thinning-sm - anon

[ In Reply To ..]
If more funds were awarded for thinning, then some of these fires would also not be as powerful or as difficult to control. When people ask for smaller government, they fail to realize that means cutting vital services like putting money towards preventative measures.
