Why don't some consider BC to be part of healthcare?

Posted: Oct 22, 2012

Insurance should cover prescription drugs, such as antibiotics, narcotics, antidepressants (how many here are on THOSE??) and birth control pills.

Are birth control pills considered different b/c they're related to sex?  Is that what it boils down to?

I was put on them at 14 years old by my pediatrician.  It wasn't covered; we had to get them at PP.  Why wasn't it covered?  If I'd had an infection, antibiotics would have been covered.

A small percentage of women take them for solely contraceptive reasons (not that it matters, IMO).  The rest of us need them for health-related reasons, such as endometriosis, painful periods, PMS or acne.

And to the women who say "keep your legs closed," does that apply to the whole of our childbearing years?  Every time I see that, I think "well, you must be past menopause, then."

Birth control reduces the chance of unwanted pregnancies by 99%.  We know the ugly thing that unwanted pregnancy leads to... it's easily preventible.

I understand why some don't want people to get it for free.  I think it's short-sighted, but I get that they don't want to pay for other people's healthcare.

But to say insurance shouldn't cover it?  Baffles me.  It is hormone therapy, and it prevents unwanted pregnancies.  We should encourage it.

Some believers always look for ways to insert religion into secular life and into - government. This is just another speartip! nm

But don't most religions think BC is okay? - RC

[ In Reply To ..]
Admittedly, I'm pretty ignorant about religion, but it seems that birth control is pretty accepted in most (maybe not Catholicism?) religions.

62% of women are on BC, and half of those who aren't are trying to get pregnant, and another percentage are not sexually active or sterile. So, it seems pretty accepted to me, regardless of religion.

It just seems to me that people relate it to feminists or "sluts" (LOL), but statistically, most of us have used it.

So basically, I am more confused than ever.

Sure, MOST do. Extremists have a way of making themselves - very, very strongly felt, though. They work

passionately and continually to save the world their way. Before they'd racked up so many successes I at least admired them for their commitment to their beliefs. Now I'm just scared of them. BTW, this movement is very heavily male dominated.

It's not moderate Christians who've specifically worked to pack local, state and federal governments and courts with people serving a evangelical and often fundamentalist agenda.

The relation between birth control and both women's liberation from men and sexual freedom is as clear to them as anyone and considered by many to be an abomination.

As for fundamentalism, check the Bible for its various teachings on the role of women. Equal pay for equal work is not in there, nor did the notion that women should be free to make their own decisions come from either testament.

Fundamentalists, of whom Mr. Romney as a Mormon is one, believe that all truth is found in their holy books, and a whole lot of the pressure coming from the far right becomes newly understandable when we remember this.

I personally believe - anon

That if BC is used for pregnancy prevention then it should not be covered by insurance. It is then elective and not medically necessary.

If you're using it for a documented health issue, then it should be covered because it is medically necessary.

It's like rhinoplasty for a cosmetic reason versus non-cosmetic.

For pragmatic reasons (for many pregnancy equals poverty) I'm on the other side - but I respect that position. nm

I see your point, but disagree. - RC

Rhinoplasty is cosmetic and has no outcome in family planning.

I think family planning is just a *tad* more important than nose jobs.

I think that if people truly want to stop abortion, birth control coverage is a basic move that has an effective impact.

Again, I'm not talking about free birth control, just insurance coverage. $10 a pack versus $60 a pack is a big difference after 12 months...12 years, etc.

Though I don't personally take this position - sm

I too respect it and appreciate your willingness to state your point of view calmly, without the heightened emotion that too often goes along with this issue.

I get much more out of this style of disagreement than the kind that features wild assumptions, capslock and flagrant abuse of exclamation points.

Insurance coverage of BC in Canada - Nancy
[ In Reply To ..]
Here's a perspective from Canada.

I have not always had insurance coverage, but when I have it always included birth control pills regardless of reason for use. I believe some insurance plans cover Viagra, but I don't have personal experience with that.

In Canada, prescriptions are not part of our socialized health care. These are private insurance plans bought by individuals or by companies for their employees. The government does not mandate what is covered. Essentially, what is covered is driven by what the market wants. If birth control is not covered, a lot of individuals and companies would not buy into that plan and it would disappear. It helps that we don't have as strong a religious right in Canada.

Funny - Viagra is addicting? - You would know, right?

Healthcare's Bipartisan Problem. Almost Half Of Healthcare SpendingJan 13, 2017
healthiest half of the population consumes only 3% of health care costs. The only alternative would appear to be taxpayer subsidies. It is next to impossible, politically, to take away freebees once in place. Income redistribution continues to increase. The 2010 health law, also known as Obamacare, forced insurers to sell coverage to anyone, at the same price, regardless of their risk of incurring big claims. That provision was popular. Not so were rules requiring nearly everyone to have ins ...

I had Obamacare and even with the subsidy still could not afford it and was paying for nothing essentially because there was no way I would ever meet the deductible.   To be forced to have to have something is not the answer and as awful as some think that the repeal and replace of Obamacare is, we have to do something and we have to start somewhere.  Obamacare was meant to fail and did noone any favors and, by the way, we were LIED to.  We have to have choices and competitio ...

Not for those who are too impatient to read anything longer than a paragraph.
