Who would you like to run for president?

Posted: May 28, 2011

I know the GOP has a lot of potential runners for the presidency, but I'm tired of listening to the news about them.  I wanna know...who do you want to run for the presidency?  Is there another potential democratic politician that you would like to challenge Obama?  Do you wanna keep Obama?  Which republican, if any, do you want to see run?  I want reasons and why people.  I figured this would help all of us do some research and really look at certain politicians.  Please keep the snide comments to yourself if you disagree with someone's choice.  If you dislike a person someone mentions, please do so kindly as well as showing some stats or facts to back up your reason for not liking them.  I think this could benefit everyone no matter party you consider yourself in.

;

I guess I will start. I'm gonna throw out - Herman Cain

[ In Reply To ..]
I know...shocking that a white person who disagrees with Obama on almost everything and is called racist by the left because of that would consider another black man for the presidency. lol

Here are some of his positions on various issues: (these came from Wikipedia, so we’ll just have to see exactly how he stands on these issues as time goes on as I don’t usually put too much stock in Wikipedia)

Economic

Cain believes economic growth can be achieved by implementing policies that emphasize less legislation, less regulation, lower taxes, and business friendly policies.[34]

Taxes
Cain supports lowering the corporate tax rates from 35 to 25 percent, eliminating the capital gains tax, and suspending taxes on repatriated foreign profits.[35] He also supports elimination of the estate tax, often pejoratively referred to as the "death tax" by detractors.[36]

Fair Tax
Cain is a strong supporter of the Fair Tax.[37] This would replace all federal personal and corporate income taxes with a national consumption tax of 23%, while remaining revenue neutral.

Bank bailouts
Cain supported the Troubled Asset Relief Program (TARP) bank bailouts as a way to save the economy, viewing it as an investment opportunity for the taxpayers. In a 2008 editorial, Cain wrote, "Owning a part of the major banks in America is not a bad thing. We could make a profit while solving a problem.".[38] In May 2011, regarding his TARP support, Cain said "I don’t have any regrets"â€Â¦. "I studied the situation. I didn’t have trouble with the idea; I had trouble with its implementation, picking winners and losers."[39]

Federal Reserve
In early 2011, Cain stated on his radio show that there was no need for an audit of the Federal Reserve (Cain objected to auditng the Federal Reserve in 2010 while hosting the Neil Boortz show).[40] Cain has clarified, however, that while such an audit is not a high priority for him, neither does he object to it.

Gold standard
Cain announced his support of the gold standard on a radio program in late 2010:

"Yes I believe in the gold standard. We should have never gotten off the gold standard because when we got off the gold standard, that then allowed Congress to inflate our currency whenever they overspent. Now look at the mess that we have."[41]

Welfare
In an interview with Christianity Today, Cain stated, "Programs today are designed to make people more dependent rather than less dependent."[42]

Social Security
Cain favors a position of reforming the current system, but not privatizing it.[43]

Social
Abortion
Cain is pro-life and opposes abortion. He believes that life begins at conception. He favors defunding Planned Parenthood.[44]

Education
Cain believes that education is vital to success and favors performance incentives for teachers. Cain also favors vouchers and charter school systems.[45]

Energy and the Environment
Cain favors offshore drilling and favors drilling in ANWR. He favors allowing consumers to choose alternative energy sources such as solar and wind through the private market instead of the government dictating who will be the economic winners and losers.[46]

Health Care
Cain favors repealing the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act. Cain favors allowing the free market to play the largest role in health care.[47]

Immigration
Cain believes that the US-Mexico border must be secured. He believes in allowing illegal immigrants living in the US to go through the the traditional citizenship process.[48]

Same-sex marriage
Cain believes that marriage is between a man and a woman and is against legalizing same-sex marriage.[49] He supports the Defense of Marriage Act [50]

Supreme Court Justices
Cain favors appointed Justices that would abide by the Constitution and not make any rules. He has expressed support for Justice Antonin Scalia and Clarence Thomas.[51]

Second Amendment
He believes that any gun permit law must be dealt with at the state level.[52]

Foreign policy
Israel
He supports Israel and believes that the US should aid Israel in defending itself.[53] After President Obama said that Israel should move its borders back to the pre-1967 borders, Cain said, "I was shocked at the president’s position, and I was equally shocked that he would unilaterally suggest that Israel would move the borders back which they acquired 44 years ago. This president threw Israel under the bus, there is no way around it. It demonstrates once again the arrogant disregard of this president for the opinion of the American people who like the relationship we have with Israel, and for Israel having the right to make its own decisions."[54]

Iran
Cain favors a diplomatic approach to nuclear disarmament. He believes that Iran is a threat to Israel.[55]

North Korea
Cain opposes any form of appeasement to the US’s enemies. He believes that the number one priority for the US is to keep its citizens safe. [56]

Russia
Cain opposed the New START treaty because he believes that the US gave up too much.[57]

At this point I'm not 100% confident in him because of his lack of experience in politics and foriegn policy and yet I find that lack of experience in politics refreshing as well. I'm definitely gonna keep my eye on him.

Agree regarding Cain. He looks very promising. - I want to hear more from him.nm

Cain on foreign policy. - sm

[ In Reply To ..]
In his own words: He does not know enough to say what he thinks about the Afghanistan War.

When asked by Chris Wallace what he would offer Palestinians when negotiating the Middle East peace deal, his reply was "nothing."

When Wallace referenced the "right of return, Cain comes back with, "Right of return...right of return?" Wallace defined it for him, and Cain's reply was, "I don't think they have a big problem with people returning."

I agree on Cain too. He's intelligent on foreign policy... - See message

[ In Reply To ..]
And has as much experience as Obama did when he first ran. Even today at 3 years later he still doesn't understand foreign policy.

As a black woman I am proud that our country has come so far to elect a black man. However, he is the wrong black man for the position. Herman Cain is an excellent choice.

Right now Cain is a good choice. Still waiting to hear what other people jump in the race, but so far I like Cain. I also like Allen West and Mitch Daniels.

Except for the experience he had with foreign relations - as a senator...sm

[ In Reply To ..]
During his time in the Senate, Obama was a member of the Senate Committee for Foreign Relations and made official trips to Africa, Central Asia, the Middle East and Eastern Europe. In this capacity, he held meetings with Mahmoud Abbas (who went on to become President of the Palestinian Authority) and addressed corruption within the Kenyan government. He was Chairman on the Senate Subcommittee on European Affairs. He also worked with Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs. He promoted expansion of the Nunn-Lugar cooperative threat reduction aimed at dismantling weapons of mass destruction in the former Soviet Union states.

He never needed anyone to define the "right to return" for him. He made it clear on the campaign trail that Iraq was the wrong war and seemed to know very well where he stood on the issue of Afghanistan. Oh, and by the way, he made good on his promise "not to forget" about OBL.

After Chris Matthews defined right-to-return for Cain, he later stated that he supported it "under the conditions as set forth by Israel." He STILL does not realize that despite international law, numerous UN resolutions and conditions of various treaties with neighboring countries, Palestinians DO NOT HAVE the right to return to occupied territories at the hands of the Israelis.

Could you please cite a few examples of why you think Herman Cain is "intelligent" on foreign aid? Why do you think Obama does not understand foreign policy? Is it that reference to internationally recognized 1967 borders (which continue to reflect illegal occupation, but never mind) or his suggestion that Israel should be an honest broker in its own peace process?
If you say so. - sm
[ In Reply To ..]
If you believe all that fine. I guess it's just the mess we are in that is so depressing. I'm not impressed by the foreign relations issues going on (wasn't impressed during the Bush years either, but at least they understood foreign issues better). Maybe he has done some good stuff. Can't tell though. There are too many issues to discuss, but what I do know is he said he'd bring troops home and end the war and he hasn't. Continuation of a war, new wars without congress' approval. The mess with what Netinyahoo (sp? too tired to google it) and what he was told. Libya's not working out to well and there are many other issues that are just too troubling. It's just a mess all around. Again, not his fault, it's his bosses fault cos he has to do what they tell him to do. So I think it's a whole regime change that people are looking forward to.

Herman Cain, while you may not feel he is intelligent when it comes to foreign relations I and others do. I've listened to Mr. Cain talk and he's very intelligent and well informed, and I'm excited that if he does make it, that we will finally have a leader that understands the issues. There is too much to list here. Just listen to what he talks about (without liking or disliking him first because he is a republican). Read his website, listen to what he has to say, and not what all the liberals news media has to say. You know they hate republicans and lie. Listen to the man, not the media.
Agree, and I am embarrassed by Obama and what - he said regarding Israel -betrayal.nm

I voted for him last election. I would like to know why with a doubt you would vote for him again. I'm just curious.

I am curious too. At this point, I would take just - about anyone BUT Obama.

What has improved with Obama in office? Anything? Oh yeah, he killed Bin Laden. Sorry, Obama, your stimulus bill was a disaster, so is Obamacare.

No electable GOP contender brave enough to mount a challenge for as far as the eye can see. Lots of hate and bluster. No resolve or muster.

I like to see Dennis Kucinich throw down. He sure knows how - to spice up a debate.

just like his republican counterpart, Ron Paul, does. Interestingly, they have both expressed a willingness to run together on the same ticket.

Ron Paul is the only Republican I will vote for. sm - LVMT

The most principled and consistent in DC. He has walked his talk without fail for 30 years. Like other Ron Paul supporters, I put principals over party. If he or someone just like him is not the nominee the GOP will not get our votes.

I voted for obama, sent him 100 bucks to run.... Then he bailed out the banks and AIG etc. Unemployment is still pretty bad. When is he gonna bail US out!?
I really voted to keep mc cain and the republicans from doing any more damage. If obama stays in I can live with that. But I would love to see someone even better than obama.

I am a conservative leaning independent. - sm

[ In Reply To ..]
If I were to choose someone who I think would have the guts to stand up for what he thinks is right, I'd really like Chris Christie but he says he won't run. I kinda like Herman Cain but his inexperience makes me nervous and yet I think we need some new people...so I'm just going to wait and see what comes out of his mouth. I also liked Mitch Daniels but he won't run either.

So right now I'm really undecided. I have no idea who I'm standing behind. I only know that Obama will most definitely NOT get my vote. We cannot spend our way out of debt and although I want the Bush tax cuts to expire...I don't believe raising taxes will get us out of this mess. We need to seriously cut back the spending and I don't think Obama really takes that seriously.

I wouldn't mind if Jim Demint or Allen West - sm

Part of what he says is tax cuts will help do that.  We have seen through decades that this has not created jobs and merely put more money in the pockets of the wealthy.  We have a wage gap that is out of this world.  I understand businesses are in business to make money, but there was a time when employers shared the wealth with their employees while still making a good profit themselves, and those times seem to have disappeared.   What things could he do to ensure that the ...
