Seriously? This is a good thing? - Roseanne

Make sure you don't take that Soma the doctor prescribed for you because you sit in front of a computer for hours at a time and your neck hurts. It metabolizes as a narcotic. Just wrap pennies and pick up aluminum cans and tough it out. But not to worry anyhow, in this profession there's no chance you could employed one day and unemployed the next :-(

Sounds like an excuse to me. (sm) - Texan

It's a very good thing. Welfare ought to be the same.

Doing the same thing over and over again - expecting different results?

Sigh. No surprise the arrogance of our know-it-all governor is rearing it's ugly head AGAIN. He still cannot explain how this TX program will yield any different results than what happened in Florida.

"....For a cautionary tale, just look to Florida. In 2011, the state passed a law requiring all welfare recipients to be tested before they received help. Applicants had to come up with the $30 to $35 for the test; only those who passed would be reimbursed.

It turned out that of the 4,086 who took the tests, only 108 — just 2.6 percent — failed, most for marijuana. That’s far below the 6 percent state average of Floridians who use drugs. (An analysis by the state showed that the drug testing requirement didn’t tamp down applications.)

Not only was Florida left with mud on its face; it also had a small hole in its pocket. At about $35 per test, the state had to reimburse $118,140. After deducting the “savings” from the 108 who did not receive benefits, Florida lost $45,780.

After just four months, a federal judge in Orlando ruled the Florida law was probably unconstitutional and blocked the measure. Last month, the 11th Circuit Court of Appeals in Atlanta agreed. And Georgia, which in 2012 passed a similar law, has held off implementation because of Florida’s problems."

In Texas, population demographics being what they are, there's a lot more mud to end up plastered all over the gov's mug. Just CANNOT WAIT for his last term to come to an end.

Was it blood? Urine? or Hair - big difference on results - - sm
[ In Reply To ..]
It should be hair only - no blood, no urine. Hair tells the tale and there is no way to have someone else pee for you and hide it inside (woman) or outside (man), no magical "detox" potions to skew the results. Is it worth the cost/lose - HELL YES it is. Look at the big picture aka the long run and how much $$$ every state would save denying those drug users welfare and/or unemployment. GO TEXAS!
Hair follicle testing is more than - twice as expensive and

Bald men beat them easily since they don't have enough hair to test.  Perry would to pray for an devine intervention if he thinks he has enough power to compel applicants to allow the state to remove armpit or pubic hairs which many folks shave by personal choice though that's the least of his problems.

Remember the 4th Amendment of the constitution?  Search and seizure without probable cause is a big fat no-no. Decision rendered Feb 23, 2013.

Decision rendered Feb 23, 2013.  Maybe the Rickster should resurrect his succession nonsense again.  Failing that, he's headed in the same direction as Governor Scott.  I'd imagine with a precedent already in place, the Texas measure will get an injuction slapped on it in no time flat.

It's not for welfare, it's for unemployment. - nm

So what? Even the unemployed are protected - under the 4th amendment
[ In Reply To ..]
against unreasonable search and seizure WITHOUT probable cause, not to mention the aspect of presumption of guilt until proven innocent inherent in this misguided policy. The most recent court ruling on this held that:

"The only known and shared characteristic of the individuals who would be subjected to Florida’s mandatory drug testing program is that they are financially needy families with children. Yet, there is nothing inherent to the condition of being impoverished that supports the conclusion that there is a “concrete danger” that impoverished individuals are prone to drug use or that should drug use occur, that the lives of TANF recipients are “fraught with such risks of injury to others that even a momentary lapse of attention can have disastrous consequences.”

Thus, the State’s argument that it has a special need to ensure that the goals of the TANF program are not jeopardized by the effects of drug use seems to rest on the presumption of unlawful drug use."

soma - anon

[ In Reply To ..]
Sorry but Soma does not show as a narcotic and I have the blood tests to show it. They are thinking of classifying it as a controlled substance because of it's narcotic-like effects, but it's not a narcotic and won't show up as one.

Soma - Roseanne

[ In Reply To ..]
Nope, beg to differ. Soma often contains Tylenol #3 which would obviously show up as a narcotic but it can mimic a narcotic on a urine test. I doubt Texas would go to the expense of forcing everyone who applies for umemployment to take a blood test but who knows, the whole state is starting to sound pretty draconian. I can't believe that passed after the major fail in Florida that expecting different results posted about.

While it may be something to consider for welfare recipients, - sm

with regard to unemployment, one has already paid into the system and isn't getting anything that isn't deserved. If one is unemployed they can do whatever they want with their checks.

God Is Testing Me, My Faith?Jul 06, 2011
What do you think when someone that's going through something horrible says 'God is testing me, my faith'? It's one of the many reasons I doubt there's a God....if there were, and one is a believer, why should they be tested?
