Waste of what money? Satire: The use of irony, sarcasm and ridicule - in exposing, denouncing or

[ In Reply To ..]
deriding vice, folly or, in this case, ineptitude as displayed in current approaches to addressing and solving this very serious and pressing dilemma. Satire is a form of high-brow humor, and definitly not everyboy's cup of tea, to be sure.

However, Colbert didn't look like he was trying to be funny. After all, Congress is not late night TV. My impression was that he was trying to capture and hold the attention of his audience and give a palatable presentation of a controversial issue. By the looks of things, he succeeded brilliantly in doing so. He even got them to laugh at themselves with the remark about working together in the best interest of the country, "like they always do."

Colbert is right on in terms of defining the problem and has articulated one of the only logical conclusions in his search for functional, effective, long-term solutions. Somewhere deep down, I think you know that. Why not try facing the issue realistically instead of belittling the critic and his presentation style next time by giving your point of view on immigrant farm labor and putting it up for a pros-and-cons discussion?

By the way, how many Americans do you know who aspire to seasonal migrant farm work and who are willing to work compulsory 12-14 hour days (all daylight hours), bending and stooping, carrying, lifting and hoisting heavy loads, doing sweaty dirty manual labor for appropriately taxed minimum wage in the blazing summer heat?

\"Somewhere deep down, I think you know that.\" NO, I don\'t. - You do not know me. I will think for myself, than

If you come here legally, I have no problem with any job you have. It is just coming here to take jobs that someone may (or may not) want is illegal, and it should be stopped not only for our economy but our security also.
Only 16 Americans nationwide showed up for - take my job day to

try the work even for ONE day. Also, immigrants who come here legally get upward mobility along with the legal status and opt out of migrant farm work. So we should sit around and wait for the vegetables to pick themselves? New technology that will make the earth waist high?

If you are so capable of thinking for yourself, lose the prejudicial attitude and try listening to the actual content of the presentation, then get back to us with a better, realistic, more practical and FUNCTIONAL solution besides this tiresome "no, no, a thousands times no" clap-trap. He did not suggest blanket amnesty. He simply suggested making more easily accessible seasonal work visas available. Lots more. Get a grip.

You are right. It was a TOTAL waste of money -shameful garbage.nm - TX

Or do you think ignoring these questions, refusing to discuss immigrant farm worker issues rationally and simply repeating someone else's mantra and bogus claims somehow lends credibility to the unsubstantiated?

the value of high-brow satire and its effectiveness in caputuring attention, shedding light and directing focus on vital issues is often lost on some.

Given the amount of coverage and debate Colbert's testimony sparked, I would have to say that he did what he came there for. Just chalk up all this phoney outrage to another failed attempt by the Focks pack to gin up controversy where there is none.
No controversy? Please.. making a mockery of something - serious is sickening. Colbert was a waste.nm

to expose the absurdity of prevailing immigration policies by a infusing a good healthy dose of logical rationale and stark reality while demonstrating the hypocrisy of certain partisan stances on these issues. Those would be the folks whose most cherished beliefs were put up for ridicule and showcased as profoundly unworkable, not to mention unbearable self-righteous and devoid of reason or viable solutions.
