Releasing prisoners because there

Posted: Feb 27, 2013

Those poor people who live nearby. They are being put at risk by this careless decision by Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano. http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/wonkblog/wp/2013/02/26/citing-fiscal-crunch-the-government-releases-detained-immigrants/;

Prisoners? - BillyJoe

They are monitoring those caught in the country illegally for things such as driving without a license outside of detention facilities. They are not releasing anyone dangerous or violent. And yes there MIGHT be budget cuts starting tomorrow because children cannot play nicely together. There are a limited number of spaces with the budget cuts, what do you propose they do? And the Dems are accused of scare tactics.

“There are some folks in detention right now who shouldn’t be there. We do know that administration has treated driving without a license as if it’s been a heinous crime. They sometimes detain asylum seekers,” says Lynn Tramonte, deputy director of America’s Voice. “There are other ways to ensure people show up for immigration hearing that are much more cost-effective.”

The cuts won't take place tomorrow. It will take a few days - to a month for these cuts to be put in place

There we go, using scare tactics again, Janet. Give it up.

As for releasing those illegal immigrants, they are criminals because they broke the U.S. LAW. They have no right to be set free and the government has every right to deport them. Let's get it done.

We wouldn't have so many detainees then and it would clear our prisons, lowering the expense of those prisons.

GOP finds a cut it doesnt like - BillyJoe

All of those released were being held for nonviolent offenses related to immigration violation — not hardened criminals who happened to be picked up for immigration issues — and they will all remain in removal proceedings under “supervised release” (meaning they’ll be given ankle bracelets or have other means of being kept tabs on).
GOP has an entire war industry to worry about. - This is just a device to keep their base

hopefully riled up. The leadership couldn't care less about these people--they're too busy worrying about how to fund the demands of those who choose who'll run for their seats next time around.

The prisoners being released - are illegal immigrants

The Department of Homeland Security has started releasing hundreds of illegal immigrants held in local jails in anticipation of automatic budget cuts, in a move one Arizona sheriff called politically motivated -- and dangerous.

Pinal County Sheriff Paul Babeu said Tuesday that Immigration and Customs Enforcement released more than 500 detainees in his county alone over the weekend. A spokesman for Babeu told FoxNews.com that ICE officials have said they plan to release a total of nearly 10,000 illegal immigrants.

The numbers, though, are in dispute. ICE officials said that it's unclear how many ultimately might be released and that only 303 have been released from four Arizona facilities so far, though all those are in Pinal County. According to ICE, 2,280 detainees are still in custody in those facilities.

Babeu described the move as a "mass budget pardon" and suggested the administration was going to unnecessary lengths to demonstrate the impact of the so-called sequester.

"President Obama would never release 500 criminal illegals to the streets of his hometown, yet he has no problem with releasing them in Arizona. The safety of the public is threatened and the rule of law discarded as a political tactic in this sequester battle," he said.

An ICE spokeswoman confirmed the plans without specifying how many illegal immigrants might be released.

Fearmongering.

"Clearly, serious criminals are being released to the streets...." This is factually incorrect.

The truth is, Immigration and Customs Enforcement is seeking cheaper detention alternatives for "immigrants in deportation proceedings WHO DID NOT pose a security threat." (caps mine)

Fox quoted Sheriff Paul Babeu, which is certainly within their rights to do. It doesn't tell the full story, however. Nor is it accurate.
Not the full story, not accurate, but it says - what it's viewers want to hear.

Does Fox News still have the gall to use the slogan "fair and balanced?" God, I hope not.

The thing is, lots of posters seem to think that questioning Fox news is knee-jerk bias. For those of us who seek out the full story, it's confounding to see how Fox continually manipulates its reporting and its viewers.
The constant posting of Fox statements here never - allows us to forget how relentlessly

they manipulate and twist coverage to further Rupert Murdoch's propaganda agenda.

Fox never does disappoint my expectation that its statements will be found on simple research to be misleading, and the ones chosen to display here are often flat-out dishonest.

Such as this lie so irresponsibly posted that we're choosing to release thousands of dangerous criminals onto the streets.

I wonder if the poster who used the word "attacking" read the post she was responding to. It did not read as an attack to me. Rather, it pointed out the fearmongering upon which so many Fox stories rely.
The way I feel about picking apart sources - is this: It's our DUTY.
[ In Reply To ..]
Do we want to find the best information possible? Do we want to know the whole story and gather from different sources to piece together an unbiased base of knowledge? Or do we want to watch/listen to the same source all the time because it supports what we believe?

I don't rely on Fox. I don't rely on MSNBC. I don't trust those sources because I know they omit, and they blow things out of proportion, sensationalize, whatever.

And if someone posts an article that is supposed to be news, but leaves out an integral piece of information--yes, I'm gonna thrash that source. Everyone should. Because we can complain about the integrity of media all we want, but if we do it while watching or listening to a network that is guilty of such things, we're perpetuating it, and we're contributing to our own ignorance.

The ONLY news worthy of truth is C-SPAN because those videos cannot be edited since they are in real time; i.e., live broadcasts are posted as videos later in the day or next day.

There are very few other reporting agencies that don't stretch the truth. I could name quite a few that stretch the truth more than Fox, but I don't feel like getting into an argument with anyone who believe "their" so-called news source is the most honest and truthful and don't stretch the truth.
Which is exactly why we have to consult - multiple sources
[ In Reply To ..]
and steer clear of others, particularly the sources that are sensationalizing or omitting important information. You're never going to know if something is omitted if you aren't consulting other sources as well. And over time, you being to see who is guilty of repeatedly omitting and sensationalizing.

Is the story presented fairly? Is it trying to find the truth in its investigations, or is it sensationalizing? Did it present both sides of the issue? These are things I look for when trying to figure out who is presenting information and who is trying to manipulate me or who may be pandering.
sure it does - doe

Here's an update - resignation of official - sm

UPDATE: According to the AP, a Homeland Security Official has now resigned over this:

ASSOCIATED PRESS — The Associated Press has learned that the Homeland Security Department official in charge of the agency’s immigration enforcement and removal operations has resigned after hundreds of illegal immigrants were released from jails because of government spending cuts.

In an email obtained Wednesday by the AP, Gary Mead told coworkers that he was leaving U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement at the end of April. Mead is the head of enforcement and removal operations at ICE.

Mead had told co-workers of his resignation in the email sent Tuesday, hours after U.S. officials had confirmed that a few hundred illegal immigrants facing deportation had been released from immigration jails due to budget cuts.

President Barack Obama’s spokesman said Wednesday the White House was never consulted but described the immigrants as “low-risk, non-criminal detainees.”

"Twitter quickly decided that Mead, an official with Immigration and Customs Enforcement at the Department of Homeland Security, first was and then wasn't resigning because of yesterday's announced release of immigrant detainees."

"Reading a little further in the four-paragraph AP article makes clear that Mead's resignation wasn't linked to any outcry. He sent it yesterday afternoon -- after DHS' announcement but before Obama responded and before Boehner was on CBS."
