Is it just me, or does this bother anyone else?
I was at the grocery store ... Publix, which is not exactly low-end ... waiting for my deli purchase to be sliced and just starting to head about fifteen feet away to pick up a roast chicken, when ... cue Jaws theme ... some woman riding one of those store-provided motorized carts zooms up and completely blocks all access to the to the roast chicken display. That part in itself isn't the issue; I was happy to wait. It did, however, prevent me from taking immediate action to circumvent what happened next.
The woman commenced to reach her arm into the display case to snaffle out every last chicken, which were in paper bags that have fairly large see-through windows and two ventilation holes on each side at the top, just below where they fold over. With each of the fifteen chickens, she first attempted to unroll the fold to open the bag, but was foiled by the adhesive. She then handled each one thoroughly, and brought it an inch from her nose to peer into the window. And then she practically stuck her nose into the holes to smell the chicken. At length she smelled it, then peered in the window again. She then rejected each one, flinging it back into the case. When she finished manhandling and smelling all fifteen birds, she very nonchalantly picked up the two chickens that had been in the front to begin with, plopped them into her cart, and zoomed off.
This woman was not visually handicapped. She consulted a shopping list during this process and had no trouble reading it at arm's length.
The chickens were also all the same flavor, which was clearly indicated on the label, so she couldn't have been searching for a different kind.
Does this kind of thing gross you out? It did me. And remember, I was unable to snatch one before she got to it because she blocked the display.
I wanted to go over and ask her if there was possibly one single chicken that she had not pawed with her grimy mitts and had not snorted her germs all over. I didn't though.
I was brought up not to handle food products excessively, or open them, and definitely not to smell anything except perhaps cantaloupe and pineapples, and then to do so discreetly, not like a dog smelling something nasty in the grass.
Am I alone in this? What would you do?
