One nation under God....

Posted: Apr 19, 2013

Wow...the president just ended his statement with the words, "One nation under God," and here I thought that there was a war on religion in this country!!!  (or so we've been told by some)

There IS a war on religion in this country--at least, on Christian religions.

Pay no attention to what he says--pay attention to what he does (and doesn't) do.

Spot on! One DOES need to look at what he does - Thanks for posting

There is no war on Christianity. For crying out loud, there's practically a thriving church on every block in almost every American city where folks are free to convene and worship as they see fit.

Just because someone else doesn't see your particular light doesn't mean they are at war with Christianity. They just resent being told what they are "supposed" to believe, and there are so many different Christian ways to believe depending on their interpretation of the Bible.

You all keep saying the Bible isn't allowed in school any longer, and that's a complete and utter falsehood. Kids can take their Bibles to school AND read them too. The only thing not allowed is for any particular religion to be taught in a public institution, and that's fair. Because if you allow Christianity to be taught, then the other religions must be taught as well. Is that okay with you? It was MY job as a parent to introduce my child to any particular religion I wished, not the public school. If you wish your child to be taught Christian values, you are certainly more than free to send them to one of the many thousands upon thousands of Christian schools we enjoy the freedom of having in this wonderful country.

You all need to get off the martyr wagon, at least here in this country. You've got religious freedoms that many in this world only dream of, where the penalty for following a different religion than that forced upon them by the government can result in beatings, arrest, and even death. Now THAT is war on religion. Because some folks disagree with what you are trying to force EVERYONE to believe does not equate to war, simply disagreement. Huge difference.

Considering that more than 70% of the country is Christian, that means for them to be properly persecuted, a lot of Christians have to be fighting on the heathen side of the war. If that's the case, it's more of an internal conflict than persecution.

It seems the number one piece of evidence they cite in the war on Christianity is that they get picked on and people make fun of them. Unlike atheists, Hindus, Muslims, Jews and all the other faiths who enjoy universal love and adoration. Imagine what it's like to be a Muslim in America.

I've been agnostic/atheist since I was a kid. One of the more reviled religions in the world because we're mere pawns of the Devil and all that fun stuff. But despite some very nasty criticism and some stupid jokes, I have not been persecuted. Atheists count for only 4% of the population of the U.S. as opposed to the aforementioned 70+ for Christianity. I have not been oppressed. Yet. If I'm not oppressed, there's no way Christianity is oppressed.

And that's the great part about America. We can fight and bicker and disagree all we want, but we don't get to forcibly convert and we're all happier for it.

Thank you, Empirelady! I am sick to death of these BS artists trying to make themselves into some sort of victims of persecution. They really need to turn off Fox "News" and engage in reality, at least once in awhile.

Christians are attacked daily like no other faith -
How so? - Empirelady
[ In Reply To ..]
Were you prevented from going to church yesterday (or Saturday if you are 7th Day Adventist)? Were you pulled over and beaten or put in jail by the authorities?

What exactly does "attacked" mean? If it means you aren't allowed to push your particular brand of religion on others, that's not an attack. That's someone telling you to worship as you see fit and let others do the same. If they were rude to you for that pushing, it's probably because you crossed a major boundary for them. You gave your message; leave them alone and let them figure out for themselves how they want to worship. Again, disagreement or a different point of view does not equate to "war."

If you are allowed to have the 10 Commandments or whatever other Christian symbol you wish to have in a public institution, you surely won't mind then if other religions place their symbols as well right next to that Christian symbol you would like displayed. Are having a cross atop almost every Christian steeple and well advertised church services and activities in your local newspaper religious section not enough? I can think of at least 3-4 Christian channels on cable. I don't keep track, because I can't get past the 5-inch eyelashes, wigs, and shameful grabbing for money from innocent souls. That's not enough? Try doing that in China, Afghanistan, Iran, Iraq. Go ahead. You'll find out very quickly what war on religion really is, I guarantee you.

Truly, can you please enlighten me as to what constitutes "war" for you? I'm not being sarcastic. I would really like to hear from you on that. And, please, no vague generalities. I would like to hear of specific instances where Christians have been rounded up and arrested and/or beaten, had your Bible taken away and burned, etc. And, no, that last sentence was not sarcasm either; that is TRUE war on Christianity that others on this planet suffer. For you to equate whatever you "suffer" for your religion in the USA to what others in this world suffer, well, that's just incredibly insensitive to downright insulting to those poor souls.

P.S. I must edit to add, I am a nonsmoker, and I'm pretty sure my oxygen saturation level is near 100%. I do live in a small town by the sea, so no smog to deal with. I love to walk the beach. However, I try never to put my head in the sand, a little too much fiber for me, But, I do appreciate your concern. Thank you. :)
Now THAT was spot on!! Thanks for taking the time - to compose

You don't know that, and comments like this are responsible for so much of the ugliness and hatred that has gone on these past few years. No one seems to want to deal with facts any longer. Sad, really.

Oh please - Enough already with the "ugliness and hate" - spew - sm

[ In Reply To ..]
Sick and tired of people labeling anyone who doesn't believe the way you and others do as "hate" and "ugliness".

It's really sad that you can't just speak about the subject without throwing in that. But if you want to talk about ugliness and hatred lets talk about the Bush presidency and all the ugliness and hatred directed at him.
Did anyone ever challenge Bush's belief in - God?

"I wonder which God he is referring to when he says "One Nation Under God". I doubt it is the God of the Bible he is referring to."

That is ugliness and hate no matter which way you slice it.

And if he left God out of the comments, I wonder what kind of criticism that would have drawn here. No matter what he says or does pure hatred is slung at him from the righteous right.

And who is anyone to challenge or judge another's belief system or their God?

This isn't church. It is a country of religious freedom.

Did I say anything about Bush? - Empirelady
[ In Reply To ..]
No, I did not. I have many issues with his and Cheney's reign, but I'm sure not going to question his, or anyone else's, faith and who they believe in. That is between them and their God, regardless of who that God is. Furthermore, guess what? It's none of my business who Presidents worship. They aren't there to direct the nation in how to worship; they are there to run the country.

I was discussing the so-called Christian "martyrdom" that seems to be the latest whine point. Christians are not persecuted in this country just because others take umbrage at having something shoved down their throat. If you want to see persecution, go to China, Afghanistan, Iran. Go ahead. The Christians in those countries KNOW what true war on Christianity is. They sometimes die for their beliefs. When was the last time you had to hide in a secret room or closet to worship, all the while being afraid your neighbor would turn you in, or the authorities would break down your door and haul you away and burn your Bible? Let me know when that happens to you, and I might begin to see that point.

P.S. Yes, I am a Christian, and by that I mean I try my hardest to follow Jesus' actual teachings as the Son of God, sort of a "red letter" Christian if you will, meaning His actual words. They aren't filled with hate and prejudice and conjecture.
Oooh gee, now you know how we feel when we post something - and someone comes back with

well Bush did this or Bush did that.

And yes I will use a Bush comparison if a post is a drive-by only meant to incite (i.e. using the words hate, hater, ugliness, etc)

And the drive-by in **this** case was Corgi's:

I will still use a Bush comparison when I see the garbage drive by of someone posting the words "hater" or "ugliness". Especially when it does not fit.

Trust me...any disagreement directed at - (see message)
[ In Reply To ..]
George W. Bush (ugliness and hatred, as you say) was NOT for his religiosity, his Christianity, or his belief in God or the Bible. My disagreement and dislike of President Bush was for many, many other things--none of the above.

Much of the "ugliness and hatred" directed toward Barack Obama seems to focus on his "other-ness," godlessness (some seem to think they can see into his heart and soul), and the falsehood that he is a Muslim. Even if any of these were true, they're things that we're just not supposed to be judged by in this free country of ours.
"President (war criminal)" Bush - Chavera
[ In Reply To ..]
There is plenty of good reason for any ugliness and hatred directed at this war criminal. We can start with the 6000+ dead soldiers from his immoral war, and go on from there. This man was the worst President in the history of our country and did untold damage to people's lives, the economy and our reputation around the world. And that is just from his wars!
