More good news! The U.S. economy added 271,000 jobs in October, and strong hiring drove unemployment

Posted: Nov 6, 2015

The U.S. economy added 271,000 jobs in October, and strong hiring drove unemployment down to 5%.

Labor participation remains at a 40 year low. - We now have 100 million adults not

in the labor force. Do the math, not Common Core math.

Every single week we hear about contractions in business, Target is closing stores, Heinz is closing 7 factories, JC Penney is laying off, etc. It just doesn't add up.

Most of those jobs are part-time Christmas jobs and - are temporary. I don't think

[ In Reply To ..]
anybody really believes we are at 5%.

Adult Civilian Non-Institutional Population (age 16+ not in military, prison, or an institution): 251,541,000 (+216,000)

Employed: 149,120,000 (+320,000)

Unemployed (could start job and actively looked for work in last 4 weeks): 7,915,000 (-7,000)

Employed plus Unemployed = Labor Force: 157,028,000 (+785,000)

Labor Force / Population = 157,028,000/251,541,000 = 62.4% (no change)

Employed / Population = 149,120,000 / 251,325,000 = 59.2% (+0.4)

Unemployed / Labor Force = 7,908,000 / 157,028,000 = 5% (-.1)

Not in the Labor Force (neither working nor trying to work): 94,513,000 (-97,000)

Many of the gains are aged 55 years or older, - part time sujpplemental jobs.

Older workers seem to have a better work ethic.

My husband is 64 and was just lured back to a position he left earlier this year with a substantial raise. The employer got rid of the 30 y/o who replaced him because he was not at all concerned with customer satisfaction, spent more time on his iPhone that he did doing the job, and dressed like a slob.

Work ethic matters!

Everything is wonderful I guess. I can borrow money, buy a house, - car, etc. Unfortunately my bank account

and they rant, rave, turn red in the face, and yell "liar" at people. They also make up ridiculous stories and state them as facts. That's what GOP extremists do. That's why they exist, to destroy the government. That is their stated goal, and they intend to succeed at it.

Their own words. Way too many to Google but start with McConnell - Attend a Tea-Party Rally Read Their Signs

Open your eyes. Listen to what they say. Look at their signs and their blogs, and the interviews with the Tea-Party members in Congress. You don't see it because they say what you want to hear.
McConnell is a RINO. He sides with Obama. - He's just like Boehner.

The Tea Party is for smaller government and less taxes. That's not extreme, unless you are an extreme leftist/socialism who loves government.
Nobody is acceptable to the Tea Party They are the party of NO! - It is not working well for them

They have single-handedly nearly destroyed the Republican party. There is no reason or logic with them, only hard opinions and huge temper tantrums.

The Tea Party members are bullies. They intimidate, yell, scream, refuse to consider any other ideas other than the one they have chosen to worship. Yes, I said worship. When all your life is nothing but pushing one agenda, you worship it, and that is against everything I believe in. You can stop trying to bully me and the rest of the people on this forum. It doesn't work here. It works in Congress, but not in the rest of the world. Get over it.

With 330 milion people and almost 100,000 out of work, that's only - 64% of Americans working.

[ In Reply To ..]
The math doesn't lie.

Labor participation rate remains at a 37 year low as - 94.5 million remain outside the labor force.

[ In Reply To ..]
In another sign that the labor market slack, at least from the Fed's perspective, is now reaching a peak, the Household survey reported that while the civilian labor force rose by over 300K in October, the number of people not in the labor force actually declined by 97K to 94.5MM (as those employed rose by 320K), following an exodus from the labor force of over half a million in September.

Despite this headline improvement, however, the participation rate remained at 62.4%, same as the prior month, and at a level last seen in 1977.

Elsewhere, the civilian employment to population ratio also remained rather downbeat at 59.3%, a modest increase from last month's 59.2% and virtually unchanged from the 59.2% also reported one year ago.

Finally, while there are many explanations why the participation rate remains so low (and continues to decline) most notably from the Fed who said that people "just don't want a job", the reality is that 94.5 million Americans either no longer have an interest or desire to look for a job.

A hundred million people in a nation of 330 million, - sounds terrible to me, and the

Graphs are revealing than a derived number.
