Latest Mike Tobin video on Baltimore "shooting" today

Posted: May 4, 2015

Here is the new video. http://www.mediaite.com/tv/foxs-mike-tobin-defends-inaccurate-initial-report-on-baltimore-shooting/ In it, Fox News' Mike Tobin says: "It was the observation of myself, my security team and my camera man that the officer had his weapon drawn. We heard a gunshot, we saw the person being chased on the ground. I arrived at the conclusion that the man had been shot, as you naturally would in a situation like that. We walked up on him, he looked to be in bad shape. The police now say that he was uninjured. So it's not clear if he hit his head, if he was exhausted or if he was just play-acting, but he looked to be in bad shape when they took him away on the ambulance. Obviously, the initial conclusion that he was shot is inaccurate now, but if the situation were to duplicate itself a short period time from now, or any time in the future, I'd be hard pressed not to arrive at the same conclusion." Interestingly, Manuel Rapalo from RT reported the same thing via Twitter. Okay, but I still have no idea of what really went on today, then, or why the man WAS lying on the ground. Though Fox News gave an apology, that's not exactly an apology from Mike Tobin. I don't think it's because he's too proud, but because he almost sounds still unconvinced. This is why the press either needs to film it while it's happening or report their perception, but explain they don't have confirmation of their perception yet. And by confirmation of the full perspective, I do not mean just from the police; I mean getting BOTH sides of the story from both police and the man taken to the hospital via ambulance himself, later (which we still don't have). And hey, since we still haven't heard from the guy that went to the hospital, Mike Tobin could still be right. That'd be a looootttt of lying by a lot of higher-up police, so I don't think so, but ya never know with all that's gone on. Interestingly, both liberals and conservatives have reported both on social media and here that they "saw it happen live", giving vastly different accounts, but provide no video link, and apparently no such video yet publicly exists of the actual event, just the after-effects of it (at least at the time I wrote this). Does this mean either liberals or conservatives are lying about what they saw or stupid or knee-jerk hysterics? No, not necessarily. It means that sometimes we as humans jump to conclusions based on what pieces we DID see or we see what we want to, especially when there's lots going on or tensions and emotions are high. Or sometimes we ARE telling the full story based on what we could see from where we were standing at the time, both literally and figuratively. Still other times, it's a person's individual personality they focus on details rather than big picture or vice versa. Although the press is supposed to hire more objective personalities, nowadays, it seems they're looking more for PR people and sensationalists. But even when they are more objective personalities reporting, they're still human. So perhaps the reason this happens in situations like these is because underneath all the political perspectives, we're all the same as human beings, subject even to the same flaws, just in different ways - whether we like to admit it or not:) PS - I realize this isn't going to win me any popularity contests on either "side" and it's not like I haven't done this myself. But that's my point. Maybe we all do sometimes, it's not party specific:);

Most the press today is not objective. News should be - information, otherwise it's

[ In Reply To ..]
propaganda. That's what dominates most networks today.

This is what passes as journalism today. Guess - which network said this...

1) "The Police Force Is Populated with Unstable War Veterans".

(2) CNN Anchor Warns Baltimore Protester About Cops: “You Know How They Are”.

(3) CNN During Monday’s Riot: "There shouldn’t be calm tonight. Black people are dying in the streets. They’ve been dying in the streets for months, years, decades, centuries".

(4) The Police are "An Occupying Force In the Hood".

(5) CNN Reporter Intentionally Provokes Confrontation with Baltimore Cop: "Are We Under Martial Law"?

You should read some of the things Baltimore teachers have to say about their "students" treat the teachers. I wouldn't want to be a teacher or a police person in Baltimore.

CNN has fanned the fan of racial hatred in everyone of these incidents. It's the real hater's network.

If CNN is the hater's network.... - sm

The mere fact so many network news have to give so many apologies anymore proves - it's all become tabloid journalism - OP
[ In Reply To ..]
Who ever heard of news channels having to issue as many apologies as they do nowadays? I tell you what's gonna have to happen, one of them is going to get sued big time for these "mistakes", just like what happens to the tabloids. They won't stop, of course, just like tabloids, but people will stop quoting what's become tabloid news like gospel truth.

It's pretty sad when a person just trying to get the facts has to watch or read several stories or channels and sift through the spin just to piece together the whole picture. I typically avoid network news at all anymore, it's all about ratings. Instead, I read a little Washington Post, then the Wall Street Journal for balance lol.

I have to be honest, if I do "watch" news, I can't watch Fox News for long, it's too political. Sometimes I just want to know what's going on in the nation or world, not just what Obama had for breakfast this morning. Fox News has become the unofficial Anti-Obama Facebook page. "Today, Obama had eggs and toast. Did you know that Karl Marx liked eggs and toast?" lol.

But in all fairness, I could see in Mike Tobin's case where was coming from, he just should've filmed what he was seeing (not sure why he didn't), waited to report or report what "appeared" to have happened, but said a disclaimer often that he was awaiting confirmation. He made a mistake reporting during a confusing time, period.

If I do "watch" national network news, I usually watch CNN - *HOWEVER* - CNN has had to issue an apology at times in recent years, too. Also, they kinda freaked me out last Fall watching the "Ebola Caravan" and Dr. Brantly arrive in Atlanta from Africa. The caption at the bottom of the screen said "Medical history in the making for America." I thought, "OMG, we're lauding Ebola's arrival to America so we can exprimentally try to treat it? What a dangerous, arrogant and wildly inappropriate thing for CNN to be praising, and watching every move of the ambulance arrival is just as creepy as Fox.

Remember the movie "Broadcast News" with Holly Hunter, Albert Brooks and William Hurt? The entire point of that movie was old-school journalists with integrity fighting the new breed of sensationalists and stagers. Apparently, the latter won :(

On that note, has anyone seen the best moments of Conan's visit to Cuba that even Fox News found funny, particularly Conan good-naturedly mocking CNN?

http://www.foxnews.com/entertainment/2015/03/06/conan-obrien-5-best-bits-from-cuba-show/

(It's sad I have to even provide that disclaimer so that some people will know it's okay because Fox News approved it. Otherwise, a collective gasp could be heard on the far right because I said the words "Conan" and "Cuba.")

I recommend all 5 clips, particularly his visit to the rum museum and where he's attempting to dance, but particularly "Conan reports on the Sunrise for CNN" because it's relevant.

Anderson Cooper took it well and in fact, grades his journalism skills and gives him some tips:

Gotta learn not to be so loyal to our news, people, they're not loyal to us - and not take politics or ourselves so seriously
The TV news is all about ratings, which equals - MONEY. Otherwise they dont care.

The first part of that sentence is a fact, the second is my take on it.

There is a difference between information and opinion.

Like reporting after the Texas shooting we need - limits on free speech and

blaming the Benghazi attack on a video.

This is not journalism. It's activism.

I read something like that in the NYT, it's always the - fault of the American,

[ In Reply To ..]
I did a little research and found out John Reed got a Pulitzer for his praise of the 1917 revolution and the subsequent formation of the Soviet Union. Before that, a certain Karl Marx was a foreign correspondent for one of The Times predecessors. Walter Duranty made up complete liesa bout Stalin and life in the Soviet Union in the 1920s and 1930s. He even won a Pulitzer Prize.

NYT left leaning goes way back.

"I may not agree with what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it" - ~ Voltaire (and the OP)

[ In Reply To ..]
Sorry, can't agree with you on this one, we'd have to change our constitution, which again, for those unaware, is a "liberal" thing to do in the actual definition of the phrase. I lean left myself and I'm not against changing the constitution, but most of the time, I think it just needs better interpretation by the supreme court.

Many fought and died for our right to freedom of speech, it's not mine to take away. But it's our responsibility to sift through it as critical thinkers and perhaps libel laws needs to be stronger and enforced more regularly.

The problem with free speech itself is when there is natural social consequence for it, people claim their civil rights are being violated and they're being persecuted just because people disagree with them. Conversely, others don't understand the difference between free speech and harassment of others, particularly online. So as I said, we DO need better definition/interpretation of existing laws on free speech and perhaps better libel and harassment laws, particularly online.

But kudos Garland Texas police for acting on the terrorist situation quickly:)

Just an aside, I once went to Debbie Schluessel's site not too long after I heard she'd cheered on Kayla Mueller's death, trying to see if she was for real or just trying to get readers. While there, I gave that Voltaire quote in my title about not agreeing at all with what she said, but defending to the death her right to say it.

Ya know what happened?

I was attacked by the commenters that Voltaire was an antisemite (which I did not know) so I must be an antisemite, instead of them realizing I was defending their right to free speech, just so long as I had the right to offer dissenting free speech. I didn't comment again but stopped reading shortly after she attacked Leonard Nimoy on the day he died for being a "self-hating jew."

Seems Debbie is happiest when people she disagrees with die and everyone is antisemitic in her eyes and a "self-hating jew" if they are Jewish and disagree with her. Unbelievable.

That includes all of the TV and cable news, I have to - go online to out of the country

Yep, that's why I forego US media sources & - stick to Aljazeera or NHK (Japan).
