Just sharing-no bashing please

Posted: Feb 18, 2010

I received this email and I have not as yet researched it (although I did take the "Corporations are NOT the People" bumper sticker) so this is just to share and you can all do your own research if you are curious, although I would be curious if anyone else confirms this or hashes out whatever details they may or may not be leaving out.

Reject S. 3002 DSSA, The Food Supplement Criminalization Act of 2010

It wasn't enough for Congress to kill off the public option. Now they
want to kill us directly by trying to outlaw nutritious food
supplements ... again. The corporate medical industry is doing
everything they can to keep the American people from having any
option besides their over-priced and often harmful health "care",
when they aren't denying coverage altogether that is.

Senators McCain and Dorgan have just introduced yet another thinly
veiled attempt to criminalize ordinary vitamin pills, proposing give
the FDA the power to preemptively and without cause restrict their
distribution, deceptively entitled the Dietary Supplement Safety Act,
S. 3002. This is the same FDA that routinely waves through dangerous
synthetic drugs that kill hundreds of thousands, hardly a
recommendation for their administrative prowess. Yet millions of
people take natural vitamins and other food supplements in complete
safety already. Where is the epidemic of vitamin pill fatalities?
There is none.

Reject S. 3002 Action Page:
http://www.peaceteam.net/action/pnum1032.php

Of course this is at the bottom line just an assault by giant medical
corporations on small businesses who would dare cost them business by
helping to keep the American people actually healthy. We just had a
Supreme Court decision, which we will continue to fight to our last
breath, saying in practical effect that the most powerful
corporations can no longer be regulated in any meaningful way,
endowing them with full citizenship rights as natural people. But let
the American people try to take a completely natural vitamin pill
with a couple too many milligrams of potency and they are ready to
call out the swat team.

We have already had requests for nearly 10,000 of the new
"Corporations Are NOT The People" bumper stickers, which we are
making available for no charge, not even shipping. And we also have a
new "Impeach The Supreme Court 5" bumper sticker, because of their
dereliction of judicial duty as we have demonstrated with four
critical analytical pieces so far (with more to come) on the many
profoundly dishonest aspects of the decision. So if you have not
requested yours already, please do so now, because we take delivery
of the second huge printing this week, and will again be shipping as
fast as we can by first class mail.

You can request one of the new bumper stickers for free at

Supreme Court Decision Protest Bumper Stickers:
http://www.peaceteam.net/bumper_stickers.php

Or you can do so from the return page of the action page on the must
be rejected S. 3002 from the first link above. Of course if you can
make a donation of any amount, please consider doing so, as this is
what is making it possible for us to send bumper stickers to anyone
who cannot make a donation right now.

And also make sure you submit the two action pages calling for
corrective congressional action by way of constitutional amendment,
confrontational legislation and impeachment.

There is a pattern here, folks, and it started at least as early as
the Reagan administration. Remember the faux patriotic cries for
deregulation. There is not a single example of any of this
deregulation since that has not proven to be a policy disaster for
the public interest. And in each and every case the deregulation they
were talking about was for BIG CORPORATIONS.

What we have witnessed in the last few decades is a premeditated and
systematic dismantling of control of corporate abuse and corruption
in the name of "freedom". The latest Supreme Court decision,
declaring that fictitious business entities have the full and same
freedom intended to be reserved for "the people" is a further giant
leap down this same dangerous road to a full blown corporate police
state.

Reagan decried the "nanny" state, but only for corporations, trying
to turn good public policy, which is the PURPOSE of government of,
by, and for the people, into a pejorative. But when it comes to the
people, there is no regulation too intrusive or too burdensome for
the corporatists, of which this latest attempt to criminalize our
food supplements is just the latest example.

Though S. 3002 lacks even a preamble to justify why it needs to be
passed, its sponsors claim that it is needed to keep illegal drugs
from being put in food supplements. If this is the premise, it is a
farce on its face. If drugs are illegal already, there is perfectly
adequate authority to prosecute those who would do such a thing,
whether it is anabolic steroids or crack, without a begging to be
abused new change in the law.

Congress can't seem pass a sensible health care bill to save our
lives. They go out of their way to hide from good policy ideas
favored by a majority of the American people, like an economical and
efficient single payer system. They have refused to regulate the
medical insurance industry in any meaningful way. But when it comes
using "safety" as a pretext for stealing the people's freedom, or
causing us unnecessary added expense, they can't propose enough
bills.

Remember that "safety" was the also disingenuous excuse why Congress
again denied the American people access to prescription drugs at the
same more favorable prices paid by every other country in the world,
by allowing reimportation of products even made by American
companies. Well, Congress is not keeping anybody or anything safe but
the profits of corporations with too much outrageous power over our
government already. S. 3002 might as well alternatively be dubbed the
Big Pharma Profits Enhancement Act of 2010. And it must be stopped.
Again.

Thank you very much for posting this article. These are the types of posts I enjoy reading here.

This is so wrong in so many ways I cannot even begin to tell you. On one hand they say that people need to to preventative medicine so they don't need to go to docs, etc, yet on the other hand they try to outlaw anything that is preventative. Has to make you think there is a motive behind it.

I am passionate about natural health care and to read this really makes my blood boil.

Again thanks for the great post. I had not seen this anywhere and appreciate you posting here.

I totally agree~this one really bugs me. nm - Colleen

Thanks for bringing the supplemental issue to light here . . . . - Really?

[ In Reply To ..]
These drug makers and insurance companies are bound and determined to get their pound of flesh from the public one way or another. This is outrageous.

Also, the 100-year SC reversal is another outrage. There were people that got up in arms when the President called them out during the SOTU address -- they (the 5-4 majority) deserved it, every humiliating second. This will absolutely change the very fabric of our democracy if this is allowed to remain.
GOP thought McCain and GOP wanted less govt. - Keep their hands out of our vitamin bottles.
[ In Reply To ..]
Sheesh. What next?

Let's just back up a bit... - before getting our knickers in a twist

[ In Reply To ..]
First of all, only a fool would deny that there aren't any number of highly dangerous "supplements" being sold today, some of which are steroid precursors, some of which are neurotoxins, cardiotoxins, induce liver damage, etc. (the list is horrific) and others of which become dangerous when taken in combination with certain others. Call it a "supplement" if you wish, but that doesn't alter the fact that these are chemicals, or that some of them have killed the people who took them.

Second, there are even more supplements being sold that are fraudulent because there is no requirement for lab assays. These fake preparations contain very little, or perhaps even none, of the "active ingredient" they are supposed to provide.

Third, McCain's bill specifically does NOT limit the ability of legitimate supplement manufacturers to market supplements, nor the rights of citizens to purchase them. This is sheer hysteria, perpetrated by the supplement industry.

Fourth, Canada is also cracking down on fake and dangerous supplements.

Fifth, McCain's bill has the support of important groups involved in such things as policing the use of drugs in sports, monitoring the adverse effects of supplements in elderly patients, etc.

Folks, this stuff isn't funny. It's a totally unregulated industry that has endangered and/or defrauded the public long enough. They've had a nice run, but it's time now to get rid of the sleaze in this industry. The reputable companies will not be adversely affected.

Read this from the USA Triathlon site:

"The U.S. Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) and members of the Supplement Safety Now (www.SupplementSafetyNow.com) coalition today applauded Sen. John McCain for introducing legislation, the Dietary Supplement Safety Act of 2010, that would go a long way in protecting Americans from consuming tainted over-the-counter supplement products labelled as "healthy" but containing designer steroids and other dangerous drugs.

"The McCain bill is a fair and balanced approach that provides significant protections for all consumers of dietary supplements, while at the same time avoids placing unreasonable burdens on legitimate companies in the industry," said USADA CEO Travis T. Tygart. "We are grateful to Sen. McCain for his strong leadership on this public health issue and urge other members of Congress to support this bill."

The consumption of dangerous drugs such as designer steroids, often found hidden in over-the-counter supplements promoted as safe and legal, has been a known cause of liver injury, stroke, kidney failure and pulmonary embolism."

Let's get a grip and stop screeching that the sky is falling.

Thank you for clearing this up. (nm) - Great Post

[ In Reply To ..]
...that some of these supplements are "manufactured" in filthy backrooms under disgusting conditions, where the filler is contaminated with rat crap, bugs, bacteria, fungi, mites, dirt and only the Lord knows what else.

Literally anyone can easily purchase a hand-operated "pill machine", print some impressive labels, throw up a persuasive, "professional-looking" website that makes all sorts of impressive claims, sign up for PayPal or Clickbank and crank out a very nice living. In fact, one of the tricks they know is that they should charge an outrageous price for their junk because we Americans tend to use price as an indication of quality when we have absolutely no objective means to judge. So, in fact, the garbage supplements often sell for much more than the "real McCoy". Well, it MUST be better than that other brand...see -...it costs twice as much! Like pop-eyed innocent children, we feel certain that no one would possibly have the hudspah to charge a premium price if the product wasn't premium too!

There are legitimate supplements, of course, but this industry is the modern-day equivalent of the traveling snake-oil wagon, and we're the equivalent of the gullible farmers who just rolled into town and fell off the hay wagon.

McCain has a hair across his butt about steroid use by major league athletes. He couldn't do much about that since it was already against the rules, so he chose to pursue this course which may benefit drug companies.

I don't think the bill has a chance, since it's so vaguely worded. It's another grandstand by a guy who is worried about his job.

Why shouldn't we be suspicious?

NJ
Be as "suspicious" as you like - makes no difference to me whatsoever
[ In Reply To ..]
First, most Americans don't believe athletes should be juiced up on steroids, so that's not some peculiar position for McCain to take.

Second, most Americans also don't believe that athletes who unwittingly take steroids or precursors that are disguised in "legitimate" supplements should have their careers ruined when they test positive, either!

As for the bill being vaguely worded, I've not noticed your voicing that objection to another little piece of legislation that's been traveling up and down Pennsylvania Avenue, now what was it again? Oh, yes. That marvel of clarity, that paragon of pellucidity - the healthcare bill!

Let's call a spade a spade, shall we? If this very same bill were sponsored by Christopher Dodd, or Charles Schumer or you-name-the-Democrat, you'd be right behind the wagon shoving it along.

I don't mind partisanship, but "party" isn't the gold standard in political discourse or political thinking. Unswerving devotion to intellectual honesty, regardless of party considerations, is the gold standard.
So you have read the health care bill? Point us to that vague wording. - Maybe we could help you out....
[ In Reply To ..]
Last time I checked, the bill has not been passed and what with all that talk about reconciliation being floated by increasing numbers of senators, it may not have even reached its final version just yet. Perhaps you should be reserving judgment at this point in time.

However, the process is another issue worth a look-see. The state of the current version is most definitely partisan in nature. On the one side, we have websites to go to where we can inspect the contents of the bill. We have at least an effort to produce long overdue legislation aimed at improving access to health care. We have compromise up the ying-yang that has transformed the original version into a give-away for health insurers, in the name of bipartisanship. We have an invitation to an open televised debate in the works and numerous occasions where the issue has been addressed in public and all over the media, which spins it beyond recognition.

On the other side, we have that (how did you put it?) tongue in cheek "paragon of pellucidity" of NO, socialist medicine, NO, boondoggle, NO, armageddon, NO, the end of civilization as we know it, NO, if it ain't broke, don't fix it, NO, premiums skyrocketing NO, health insurers with record profits, NO, where's the transparency, NO, "who me, transparency?"...run for the hills from open debate, NO, Obama, Hitler, fascist, commie, Moslem, NO, NO and (did I mention) NO.

My question. Which spade are you willing to call a spade?
Oh, please. We'd have to launch another website. - See comments by DEMOCRATS below.
[ In Reply To ..]
If the healthcare bill has any characteristic about which there is agreement on BOTH sides of the aisle, it is that it is CONFUSING and that even the authors of the bill have had difficulty explaining what it means.

Anyone who hasn't been living under a rock since the bill was unveiled is aware of the reputation of this bill for obfuscation and the likelihood that it will wind up in front of the Supreme Court for that reason alone, if no other.
Does your unswerving intellectual honesty prevent you - from a more direct reply to my post?
[ In Reply To ..]
Cite a confusing passage and let's get this ball rolling. Betcha you can get a lot of help from your fellow posters to clear up any confusion you might have. Don't be shy. If your claim has as much integrity as you should jump a the chance.

While you are at it, I am wondering why you have ignored my question about calling a spade a spade on that partisan nature of the HCR. Hint: The answer will help clear up any lingering confusion you may have about who the obfuscators might be.
Okay - here you go...I can do this until you - scream Uncle

There is nothing vague about that. It's pretty precise and that preciseness is what's bothering its opponents.

Any other buzzes you'd like to try?

NJ
Obviously, you have no notion of the issues. - No need to continue.
[ In Reply To ..]
First, read the assignment.

Second, I don't need the "English" explained to me, thanks.

Third, the very fact that you think this is plain tells me that you don't have the vaguest notion of what the problems are in this bill. Not a clue.
Nice, "Miss Direction". - So do what was asked.
[ In Reply To ..]
Explain it.

Compare and contrast with legislative tradition.

Reconcile it with constitutional principles.

It's obvious you haven't got the first idea where to start "explaining" this language, so just give it up.
Comparing apples and venison - NJ
[ In Reply To ..]
The opponents of that wording are concerned with its constitutionality (or lack thereof). That's far away from our discussion of vagueness which seems to be indefensible. Maybe you'd like to prove it is vague by citing another passage with precise wording?

NJ
Okay, let me try one more time. - I will try to be more clear.
[ In Reply To ..]
The "apparent" language of the bill, although it is convoluted enough in many places, is not the issue. Anyone above high school level can read the "apparent" language. It is the LEGAL IMPLICATIONS of the language that are not clear - even to DEMOCRATS.

Now, it is obvious that you are not qualified by either training or experience to "explain" anything about this bill. You are not capable of analyzing the legal ramifications nor the constitutional issues. You do not even recognize the subtleties of what appears to you to be a "very clear" passage in the bill.

I don't intend to waste my time further with your charade UNLESS you show that you can analyze this bill at some level of sophistication beyond telling me what the English words seem to say to someone who doesn't know the law.
Unconstitutional does not equal vague - NJ
[ In Reply To ..]
What about that passage is vague? Nada. It's not an issue of vagueness, it's an issue of constitutionality.

I understand that you can't explain since your argument holds no water. It doesn't make it any more true if you keep repeating it (9/11 Saddam).

NJ

Grandstanding - NJ
[ In Reply To ..]
We've got more important things to attend to, imo. Grandstanding on steroid use is a weak ploy by McCain who is in deep trouble.

As to the health care bill being vaguely worded, it can't be both ways. It can't be a bill so in depth that it has too many pages for the poor republicans to read AND be a bill that's vaguely worded. Your argument doesn't hold water, and neither does McCain's justification for bringing up a weak bill for a pet peeve of his. We need congress to take care of business for the people, not hand drug companies another bonus disguised as self righteous indignation at baseball players.

It's a joke, as are most headlines about republican officials these days.

NJ
A bill can't be vague and long at the same time? - Where did you study logic?
[ In Reply To ..]
Long = clear?

Then, I guess short = vague?

100 pages is de facto 10 times more ambiguous than 1000 pages?

The mind boggles at your thinking process.

Oh - and by the way, Republicans have read the bill, once it came out from behind the Wizard's curtain of secrecy, bribes, special deals and general scummery.

On the other hand, here's what a DEMOCRAT (Thomas Carper of Delaware) said about the language of the bill:

"I donât expect to actually read the legislative language because reading the legislative language is among the more confusing things Iâve ever read in my life,â Carper told CNSNews.com

And here's what John Conyers, another DEMOCRAT, said:

"I love these members, they get up and say, âread the bill.â What good is reading the bill if itâs a thousand pages and you donât have two days and two lawyers to find out what it means after you read the bill?"

...and when HE said that the bill was ONLY 1000 pages!

Links all over the place - read 'em and weep.

Whoops! Open mouth, insert tootsies, eh? Hope they're clean! I must see if the bill has provisions for treatment of soggy toes and red face. I'll let you know.
Misdirection, tired old tactic - NJ
[ In Reply To ..]
Care to give examples of the vagueness of the health care bill? Or just want to trumpet the republican buzz words of the day?

A long bill would, logically, be more detailed unless you think it's all a grand conspiracy. Is that it? You think the bill is 1000 pages just to confuse republicans? Heh, doesn't say much for your side if it's that easy.

You can find mistakes by dems all over the place but it won't change the argument in this topic.

McCain is grandstanding. His bill is vague and a potential gift to the pharmaceutical companies.

What's your next argument? That McCain's bill is good because there's a pothole on your street? Good luck with that misdirection.

Fat burner morphs into liver burner. Results? - Hospitalization and 2 months of agony....

[ In Reply To ..]
My husband has hepatitis C from blood transfusions he received after a battlefield injury while overseas in the military. The virus has been present for 20 years, showing mild elevation in liver enzyme markers, but totally inactive in terms of symptoms for that duration. At 47, he is otherwise in excellent health.

He does body building and power lifting, a pursuit he takes very seriously. He would not think of taking any form of steroid, a practice he believes cheats mother nature. He would take nutritional supplements in the form of protein powders and vitamins.

He purchased a Thermo Dynamx, billed as a thermogenic fat burner containing all natural ingredients such as green tea, oolong tea, ceffeine, cayenne fruit (capsaicin) and a combination of methylxanthines deived from cocoa and ginger. All natural. Right?

Before he finished the bottle (60 tablets), we started to notice the jaundice, first in the eyes, then all over, even on the soles of his feet. It had progressed over a period of 3 days or so after he had taken them for less than 2 weeks. At first, it did not occur to us that the Thermo Dynamx had anything to do with it. He continued to work out and take the supplements.

After the third week, he developed INTENSE systemic itching everywhere on his body, present 24/7, accompanied by oily, syrupy coffee colored urine. He spent 5 days in the hospital baffling the liver team as to what could have set off this initial flare of hep C symptoms (after 20 years of dormancy), until we mentioned the nutritional supplement. This was after a thorough workup with x-rays, ultrasounds, CAT scans and multiple rounds of blood work, which revealed a bilirubin that shot up as high as 14.7 before it leveled off. That was the first week of December.

He is just now returning to work after discharge from the hospital, a couple of rounds of ursodiol and Atarax and outpatient office visits. For the duration, the itch was stubborn and did not even begin to subside until around the end of January. Blood levels of bilirubin are hovering around 3.0, still way above what they should be. Liver damage cannot be assessed until he has a biopsy.

The up side? He is under care for the hepatitis C, and will be receiving treatment sometime this year, either from the county health care system or from a clinical drug trial. This will entail 6 months of chemo-type drugs that will strongly compromise his ability to work full time, due to the whole 9 yards of chemo-type side effects.

What this will end up costing is anybody's guess in terms of lost work and medical care, liver biopsy x2 and hep c drug protocols. Luckily, his genotype and subtype responds well to the regimen and he has about an 80% of fully clearing the virus after treatment. Other hep c patients are not that fortunate, with cure rates hovering between 25 to 30 percent.

So yeah, perhaps some regulation is in order here, regardless of which side of the aisle it is coming from.

Awful experience for both of you I'm sure - thanks for sharing

[ In Reply To ..]
It's odd, but instructive, that people who are ordinarily in favor of regulating everything in the world, from transfats in prepared foods to sugar content of soft drinks to the products sold in school vending machines to the portion sizes in restaurants to the lead in the paint used for toys to....you name it...are against regulating this industry, which perpetrates far worse consumer crimes and poses a far greater danger.

And why do they oppose it? For the plain and simple fact that it wasn't sponsored by someone from THEIR party. Period.

Disgusting, and blatantly, palpably intellectually DISHONEST.

FYI, I am a hopelessly entrenched progressive leftie, but - am able to recognize....

[ In Reply To ..]
that it really does not matter where helpful initiatives come from. I'll be the first to admit that this is often a begrudging admission, but hey, if the McCain legislation manages to make it through the process, I will not be shedding any tears on behalf of a party "defeat," at least not this time.

No one should have to learn such harsh lessons from anecdotal experience, or worse, lose a loved one because party politics got in the way of progress. BTW, this cuts both ways.

Six decades doesn't qualify anyone to snap their mind shut like they're trying to keep the pennies from rolling onto the floor and I would hate to ever come to such a sad state that I had nothing further to learn.

Wow. Taking pot shots at age and belittling. Impressive approach - to scoring invalid points....

Your presumptions about a closed mind are breath taking. You have absolutely no idea what I read, what the sources are, how many different media outlets I view on a daily basis, their partisan orientation or how I go about drawing my conclusions on any given subject.

Your pennies on the floor trivialization of an individual's life experience and lessions learned implies an extremely pompous, egocentric and (gasp) closed minded my-way-or-the-highway individual. You do not have to speculate about reaching such a sad state. You are already there.

You were all warm and fuzzy when you thought my anecdote supported your partisan viewpoint. You tried to lead me down the path to enlightment once you found out you were mistaken. Suppose you thought it was noble. Now that your nobility is exposed as the self-righteous insult it is, you have abandoned your prosthelytizing and jumped straight into arrogant derisions and personal disparagements.

This must be my reward for trying to support a GOP initiative. You remember (or do you?)...the thread was about McCain's nutritional supplement legislation? Seems that the only acceptable form of support needs to emanate fom the right side of the aisle.

OK. Fine. Have it your way. I take it back. McCain is a steroid attack dog with a hair up his behind, trying to push through a weak piece of legislation for partisan gain in a flailing bid for re-election that favors Big Pharma. Happy now?

He restores my sanity every day and guides my decisions that I might honor Him in everything I do. Even though I face absurd amounts of e-mails, system crashes, unrealistic deadlines, budg ...

Just Sharing To Get Off My Chest.Apr 01, 2015
This is the saddest day I have had since my father died.  My daughter's family pet, 12-yo Husky had cancer.  They have known for about 2 months.  Got worse.  They knew last night that today was probably going to be the day they would have to put him down.  She and her husband stayed home from work to take him to the vet, and I agreed to take the kids, 8 and 4, to school.  The kids have also known he was seriously ill.  They put him outside to see if he wou ...

It Will Save Republican Lives, Too (An Open Letter to Republicans from Michael Moore) Monday, March 22nd, 2010 To My Fellow Citizens, the Republicans: Thanks to last night's vote, that child of yours who has had asthma since birth will now be covered after suffering for her first nine years as an American child with a pre-existing condition. 10 Reasons Why Flu Shots Are More Dangerous Than A Flu! (just Sharing Not Debating)Nov 29, 2011
The verdict is out on flu shots. Many medical experts now agree it is more important to protect yourself and your family from the flu vaccine than the flu itself. Let’s take a look at the reasons behind this verdict: 1.) There is a total lack of real evidence that young children even benefit from flu shots. A systematic review of 51 studies involving 260,000 children age 6 to 23 months found no evidence that the flu vaccine is any more effective than a placebo. Also the shots a ...

Second City Responds To Rick Perry’s Latest Gay-bashing AdDec 10, 2011
By John Aravosis (DC) on 12/08/2011 10:14:00 AM Here's the God-fearing anti-gay video that Rick Perry released yesterday. God, you see, if upset that the President is letting gays serve openly in the military. God is okay with gays serving in the closet, but not open. He's a detail man, that God. ETA: They're also having a field day out there over the jacket Perry wore in his ad. From Andrew Sullivan's blog Oh and does that jacket in the ad look familiar? It&# ...
