These roadway bribes (especially in remote regions) have been standard operating procedure in Afghanistan and throughout the Middle East for centuries. I spent some time in Syria in the early 1980s and remember many occasions when traveling between cities, towns and villages where private automobiles, taxis and buses were stopped and its passengers searched and hasseled. Once the bribe was paid, we were allowed to pass. There is only one main road out of Kandahar that goes to the military outposts, so there is plenty of opportunity for this to happen many times before reaching a destination.

US outsourcing (to contractors) of intelligence started under GHW Bush and escalated into outsourcing of the war by GW and Cheney. When in Rome, do as the Romans do. If you expect to reach the end of the supply chain, you gotta go through the middle(men) first. Did you think the only mercenaries were on our side of the fence? Hey, it stinks, to be sure, but I guess that is the price you pay for going to war in such places. What is your solution? Contractors outnumber the 90,000 troops by around 20,000. Wanna bankroll their (military) replacements and more than double our presence there for another couple of years or decades?

killing an ant with a nuclear weapon.  After all, we're supposedly chasing bin Laden, and he could be anywhere by now or (more probably) DEAD.  In the meantime, we go on destroying that country and insist on rebuilding it in our image, which is something they clearly don't want (and our own mirror image isn't looking too great these days).

To hear him tell it, he knows where he is and is ready to go again as soon as he can scrap the money together to get back there.

We'll just set him loose over there and Bin Laden will be no more. LOL

I couldn't agree more. The fact that the (sm) - Nikki

public knows all about this and it's still going on only shows how arrogant our own government is.

I don't remember hearing it on TV nor have I read it in newspapers. I've only seen it on the 'net.

In questioning friends, they didn't know that either. So....those that don't go on the 'net to get any news articles don't know what's going on in this country, let alone the world.

Opinions: Best Search Engine That Doesn't Invade PrivacyFeb 29, 2012
I was tired of the changes Google made anyway.  If I wanted other words when I put something in quotes, I'd have put them there. So far I'm using Duck Duck Go and it seems pretty good. Tried Dogpile and just didn't get good results (for the job). Do they invade your privacy too? I'm worried what kind of stuff they would bombard me with when I'm just looking something up for the job. ...
