I now know why we heard "Allen West" in the polling of

Posted: Jan 4, 2013

DH and I were looking at each other in confusion, me assuring him West really was out as of the day before.

Turns out a couple of Congressmen put his name up anyway. One of them (we're so proud) is Paul Broun of our own Great State of Georgia. Yes the Broun of the House Science Committee as in "evolution is lies straight from the pit of hell" and a supporter of Todd Akin's views. Broun, who believes many other central tenets of mainstream science are part of a satanic plot, was reelected by his newly re-gerrymandered district in spite of a write-in campaign for Charles Darwin and a host of cartoon characters and expects to remain on the Science Committee...

The other is Louie Gohmert of a Texas oil field district, who until the bitter end (approximately the day before yesterday) insisted all climate change evidence was a bunch of lies but has now been forced to retrench to a new position that yep, the climate's changing all right, but burning oil has nothing to do with it.

Climate change is normal - a

We base everything we know on recorded history. The earth's climate will change whether humans are on earth or not. What about all the carbon that doesn't get into the atmosphere because we put forest fires out? If the fires were to go unchecked like they did before we had the ability to stop them, I am sure there was a lot of carbon emissions from them. I know, right wing blah, blah, blah. Let's have a chat with dinosaurs. Let's see if they believe their SUVs caused the ice age.

And if it weren't for normal climate - change...

[ In Reply To ..]
we might still be in that ice age. Think about it - how exactly did all that ice melt when we weren't here to cause it?

Good post, a.

so is denial - sm

of all the facile arguments I see regarding climate change, yours might be my favorite: "What about all the carbon that doesn't get into the atmosphere because we put forest fires out". (!) What the heck?

While climate change is normal to a certain extent, the global warming we are seeing today is a direct result of human intervention. This has been demonstrated by carbon isotope analysis and cannot be controverted. But then again, you would have to actually recognize science as reality and check your numinous belief system at the door.

Why don't we eradicate the human race then? - a

[ In Reply To ..]
All species pollute the environment. The planet will be here when we are long gone.

Okay, if you don't like forest fires, how about all the carbon that comes from volcanoes erupting?

If we didn't use oil, we would be burning something else to keep warm. There is not enough alternative energies other than nuclear to provide the same heating that comes from oil.

I am totally against irresponsible pollution, but scientific theory changes all the time. There is no such thing as absolute fact when it comes to science. We can only determine what happened in the past. Scientists are notoriously famous for wrong predications based on historical trends.

So many scientific hypotheses are biased as the person conducting the experiment poses the question they are trying to prove or disprove. Therefore, if you belive in global warming, your experiments will be geared towards proving it rather than disproving it.
with this, you have actually topped your previous statement - sm

Absolute facts are the currency of science. You have a lot to learn about the scientific method. Science is peer-reviewed. Theories are not simply beliefs. They are constructs based on evidence. They are tools of investigation, and they are DISCARDED once they are disproved.
Not all scientists are in agreement - a
[ In Reply To ..]
Peer reviewed means nothing to me. In NY, there is a CPA firm that had been peer reviewed, got a clean peer review, and yet was involved with a $12 million fraud at a school district.

If the peers all agree with the premise, they will look only at the facts that support the premise.

It is an imperfect world with imperfect humans, and you should not rely on something because just because it is "peer" reviewed. After all, the "peers" are flawed humans. Unless of course only scientists are all flawless, then snap, you got me.
They ARE all in agreement that abysmal ignorance - is a dreadful weight dragging humanity down.nm

It's disheartening, but I am not surprised that peer review means nothing to you. Scientific peer review is quite rigorous, and somewhat of a different animal from an oversight committee. Aside from your IQ calculation posted below, I wonder what other forms of data you deem reliable.
Nonsense. Science is about measuring. Numbers. - As we refine our methods of measurement and

develop new ones, the knowledge gained expands and becomes more accurate.

For instance, man has been measuring temperature for literally thousands of years. Back around the Napoleonic era mankind invented the mercury thermometer and measurement of temperatures in real time became much more accurate. Now we can examine items that are thousands of years old on a molecular level and find out what the temperature was when they were made.

The notion that science is some sort of faith alternative, with yesterday's gods discarded as more attractive ones are designed, is astonishingly ignorant.

It's also sad because people who adopt that attitude give up appreciation of many of the most magnificent achievements of the human race. No more thrill of amazement, no pride, no excitement of learning what has never been known before. It doesn't have to be that way. Knowledge is available to everyone. We're living in the Information Age, after all.

You heard his name only because they refused to - backwards typist

vote for John Boehner as House leader but didn't want to vote "present." It was their way of "revolting" against Boehner for "caving in" and compromising on the tax increases.

On another note, the 113th Congress, so far, seems to be made up of some new people (or maybe old) that don't want to follow rules. I've been watching them debate on Hurricane Sandy bill for $9 billion. They've been running over their time and ignoring Madam Speaker's hammer (even though the time is not very long - maybe a half minute), and interrupting with complaints while some representatives are speaking if they don't like what they're saying.

Since when is John Boehner "Madam" speaker? - nm

As a liberal myself, I don't think fear of a black conservative has ever crossed my mind.
