Liberal means to have an open, inquiring mind, - a necessity for a competent journalist. Plus,

This inevitably broadens one's viewpoint, resulting in a more liberal attitude--as in, "Oh, they're just people too." Or, "Well, they do have a valid viewpoint; I'd feel the same way." Etc.
ANY education results in a more liberal viewpoint. Just moving from a small town in Michigan to a small town in southern New Mexico will be enlightening.

As for your last sentence, neither Pub nor Dem stand for good or evil, despite the nonsense being circulated. They tend to make different choices among the costs and benefits of actions to be taken, and the tools to be used, but mostly the goals are the same. There's very little we can't meet somewhere on.
