there are several people suing Trump for just that very thing. people he agreed to pay for one price and then once they had done the work he wanted to pay them less and said take it or leave it. now I agree that the other countries do need to pay what was agreed upon, but there is also a level of diplomacy that goes with being the President of the United States. He can say the same thing without sounding like a bully. He needs to work on that. I want him to succeed, but he needs to look at how he says thing to people and sound more professional when he does.

The agreement was to pledge to spend 2% GDP on their own military, not pay into a pool. We don't pay into a pool, they don't, so US tax dollars are only paying for our military, not NATO military.

The more military states of course will contribute more to their own troops, but our country pays more into the military than any other country by a long shot. That is not what is required by NATO, it is simply dictated by our culture and our history and our desire to be a superpower I suppose, amongst other things (lots of jobs with big military, not just in the service but building the weapons and technology of war and peace keeping).

If some of the countries don't quite meet the 2% military GDP, that does NOT mean we are taking up the slack. It simply means if there is an episode requiring NATO forces, that's when it matters, so even if that country is not contributing 2% GDP to their own military, they could still come up to scratch if there were a true event that needed NATO forces.

BTW the 2% is only a guideline, NOT a requirement. If you are a small country with decent healthcare for your people and a thriving tourism industry, maybe pumping up the military doesn't make a lot of sense, but that doesn't mean they won't be there and fully trained quickly if needed. More a case of quality rather than quantity, perhaps. Surely those with small populations would not be required to contribute huge amounts of troops anyway, and if they were well trained and the best of the best, that would be more important.

Apples and oranges, for sure, I wish Trumpy had better advisors. Or maybe he does and just listens to those who say what he wants? This is a very twisted and incorrect view of NATO and is serving to alienate our European allies for very stupid reasons of puffing himself up.

NATO is NOT Mar-A-Lago when members pay dues. Trumpy needs an education.

NATO is not some kind of a fund like a golf course membership. The money is not pooled, each member nation has a target percentage GDP of 2% to spend on their own military. That's just a suggestion though, not a requirement.

US pays nearly double that at 3.6%, but we all know that this country has a huge military budget for many years, that's just how we roll (unfortunately).

Many member countries don't meet the 2%, but some are very tiny nations and some have different and developing systems of military, it is a complicated process.

More important should be the agreement to stick up for each other in a crisis, which Trumpy kind of dodged there, not reconfirming article 5. I guess he figures he's got all the military he needs and doesn't need help, but that's not exactly how it works.

I give up trying to understand it, but I personally WANT Europe to be our allies, I think it's very important not to lord anything over them, since many of his followers also can't seem to grasp the complexity of the way NATO works so you are right, just trying to make brownie points again.

So glad others see through his boring rhetoric and uninspiring speeches. Only his followers that actually see something in that wooden delivery - or are they maybe remembering those rallies that got their blood boiling, which they seem to love. Ugh.

It was a business deal and making an arms deal with terrorists. Will the ones who support this deal be defending it when jobs leave this country to go to Saudi and terrorists get weapons or will they blame Obama?

I certainly hope at some point he does address women's rights. No, I don't think it's his job to change the world but the more people involved in this disgusting behavior over in those countries the better.
