Costco Removing D'Souza's "America"

Posted: Jul 8, 2014

Crony capitalism strikes again. I'll get it Amazon. ;

I have loved Costco for the longest time, but - in the last few years some of

[ In Reply To ..]
whatever their magic used to be seems to be kind of just disappearing because it’s not the same interesting place it always used to be.

I don't understand this decision because they sold Sarah Palin and Rush Limbaugh's books.

I support their decision to do what they want, but I will vote with my retain dollars.

If this is about sales, then why do they still have - Hillary's book? It's not

[ In Reply To ..]
selling.

Let me get this straight, a privately owned bakery - can't refuse to bake a wedding

[ In Reply To ..]
cake for a gay wedding, but a major US business can decide to selectively take books from their shelves because they don’t agree with the author?
Try BJ Whosale if you live on the - East Coast. nm

I don't shop at Costco anymore, but for a - different reason...
[ In Reply To ..]
because Costco’s security tapes conveniently disappeared in their Las Vegas store after West Point graduate Erik Scott was killed.
Costco also supports amnesty. I don't shop - there, but I just don't like
[ In Reply To ..]
box stores. I spend too much when I go there.
Discrimination laws versus forced inventory - sm
[ In Reply To ..]
That about sums it up.

There are anti-discrimination laws in certain states that you can't refuse service to people based on race, creed, religion, etc. If you sell cakes, you can't refuse to sell them to certain people you don't approve of, but no one can force you to offer cake on your bakery menu.

Costco can choose it's inventory. Otherwise it would be forced to sell every book, and that makes no sense whatsoever.
The bakery owner said he would bake the cake, - no one was refused service.
[ In Reply To ..]
They could have gone somewhere else.

Apples and oranges.
While I would not discrminate, I think this case - was used to push an
[ In Reply To ..]
agenda. They could have just gone somewhere else.
I agree 100%. - sm
[ In Reply To ..]
In addition, I would not order something from a bakery that didn't support my lifestyle unless I had a food taster...LOL.
Is a doctor against abortion discriminating if - he/she doesn't want to
[ In Reply To ..]
perform it? Should it be required? Slippery slope.
no, and it's not a slippery slope in any way - fgs
[ In Reply To ..]
I would support a Supreme Court decision - securing Costco's right
[ In Reply To ..]
not to sell a book of their choice, but I'm not going to cheer Costco for pulling it off the shelves.
they don't need a Supreme Court decision, for goodness sake - sm
[ In Reply To ..]
The rights and responsibilities of retailers are already in place. There is no constitutional issue here. Retailers have the right to sell or not sell whatever they please. CVS has chosen not to sell cigarettes. It's their option.
I think that was sarcasm in response to the - bakery case.
[ In Reply To ..]
nothing
antidiscrimination laws are federal - not state - nm
[ In Reply To ..]
Yes, but those federal laws don't protect on the basis of sexual orientation. - Certain state laws do.
[ In Reply To ..]
Obviously there are the federal anti-discrimination laws that everyone knows about. Like I said in my post, there are anti-discrimination laws in certain states. These state laws go a step beyond federal law. Although federal law protects people from workplace discrimination on the basis of religion, race, national origin, sex, age, and disability, there is no federal law that specifically outlaws workplace discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation in the PRIVATE sector. (Federal government workers are protected from such discrimination.)

Almost half of the states and DC do have laws that currently prohibit sexual orientation discrimination in both PUBLIC and PRIVATE jobs: California, Colorado, Connecticut, Hawaii, Illinois, Iowa, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, Oregon, Rhode Island, Vermont, Washington, and Wisconsin. (see link)

I believe one of the PRIVATE businesses that refused to sell a cake to a gay couple was in Colorado, and they lost the case and were told they had to sell to gays based on Colorado law (not federal law since it does NOT protect against sexual orientation).

So I meant what I said when I said there are certain STATES where you can't refuse service to people based on race, creed, religion, etc. The STATE law is why the PRIVATE companies can't discriminate against gays.
I see - thanks for clarifying - nm
[ In Reply To ..]

Guess this baker in Ireland didn't get the - memo...

I'm sure once it becomes unprofitable for them, they'll remove it from their shelves.

I think Costo is the store that labeled - The Bible as fiction NM

Yes it is, but it was a limited number and accidental. - sm

[ In Reply To ..]
They apologized and fixed the error. It only happened at a store in California and not nationwide or intentionally.

If they did, then they labled it correctly. - ALL fairytales are fiction.

I never saw "2016: Obama's America" until today (link below). Someone here on MTStars suggested that we see that first before the newest movie. Now that I've seen it, I'm prepared to see the new one.
