The indictment alleges that Byrd-Bennett expected to receive kickbacks worth ten per cent of the value of the no-bid contracts, or about $2.3million.

It's unclear how much money was set aside for her, though the indictment says two trust accounts tied to her relatives - identified only as Relatives A and B - were set up to help hide the money.

The relatives were revealed by sources as Byrd-Bennett's twin grandsons, according to the Chicago Sun-Times. The money was set aside for college funds, emails included in the indictment suggest.

The company's owners, Gary Soloman and Thomas Vranas, are accused of offering her money - including plotting to place $127,000 into each of the two accounts set up under her relatives' names - along with sporting event tickets and other kickbacks in exchange for contracts.

Fardon said that Byrd-Bennett never pocketed any of the money and that she and Solomon had discussed destroying their emails. 'I think those emails reflect greed,' he told the Chicago Sun-Times. 'I think they reflect a public official who compromised her integrity and the integrity of her professional responsibility by looking to line her own pocket.'

Soloman's attorney released a statement saying his client had cooperated in the investigation and stood behind his company’s training and services. He added that Solomon had acknowledged ‘certain errors’ in judgment, but that he was disappointed he had been charged.

Vranas and his attorney didn't immediately return calls for comment.

Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel, who hand-picked Byrd-Bennett to be his schools chief in 2012, said he was ‘saddened and disappointed’ to learn of her alleged criminal activity.

In a statement Thursday, Emanuel said students, parents, teachers and principals in the nation's third-largest school district ‘deserve better’.
