Sequestration is only 2.4% of the budget

Posted: Feb 27, 2013

The sequester cuts are only 2.4% of the whole debt and most won’t take place for another month. A message for the Democrats:

STOP THE SPENDING.

STOP THE WASTE IN THE GOVERNMENT SPENDING; I.E., The Zombie training, the shrimp on the treadmill study and all the other stupid projects that received millions of dollars.  There’s where your 2.4% cuts should be and this is what the Republicans were trying to get stopped last year. Anyone read Tom Coburn's yearly list of the top 100 projects wasting dollars? If not, you should.

STOP THE SCARE TACTICS. The American people are more informed and not as stupid as you think they are.

For your enjoyment are a couple videos on Senator Thune and two by Senator Toomey. Both these men have been fighting for us. They make a lot of sense, as do others that the President and Demoncrats refuse to acknowledge. I hope they get their information drilled into the wooden heads in Congress.

Note: I was hoping to find the video of the below so as not to have this article labeled as a blog/opinion piece/right wing site, but haven’t found it yet. I saw the video yesterday on TV, but can’t remember where. Why isn’t this up front in the mainstream media? BTW, the cuts go into effect on Friday. Why the meeting on Friday? It will be a done deal by then. Our President MAKES NO SENSE!

Thune on sequester meeting: ‘Where has the president been?’

By Ramsey Cox - 02/27/13 11:32 AM ET

Sen. John Thune (R-S.D.) questioned why it has taken President Obama more than a year to call a meeting at the White House with lawmakers to try to avert sequestration.

“Now he’s coming back to Washington, when March 1 — the day the cuts are designed to go into effect,” Thune said on the Senate floor Wednesday. “Where has the president been for the last year and a half?”

President Obama announced Wednesday that he would hold a meeting on Friday with congressional leaders to discuss ways to avoid $85 billion in automatic spending cuts that will take effect the same day.

“Well, March 1 here we are, and in the 11th hour, the last minute the president sweeps in and says he wants to do something about this,” Thune said. “Where is the leadership in that? Why weren’t we doing that 10 months ago … or even last week?”

Votes on Senate sequester-replacements are scheduled for Thursday, but neither the Democratic plan nor GOP plan is expected to pass. Democrats want an equal amount of tax revenue and spending cuts, but Republicans have said they won’t accept any tax increases.

Thune criticized Obama for traveling around the country in recent days highlighting areas where jobs will be lost because of the spending cuts, saying Obama is “better at campaigning than legislating.”

Thune said he doesn’t understand why lawmakers have to wait until the last minute to deal with a crisis that was clearly approaching 18 months ago.

You're beef is actually with the Senate. This year excluded because of congressional games and tantrums, you can find President Obama's budgets on the white house website.

Sorry, watching, reading, and thinking about debt and budgets gets a bit confusing at times. - Truthhurts

This post is very long but worth reading if you care about debt:

In reality, the 2.4% sequester cut isn’t really a cut. It’s a cut in the rate of growth. Obama saying the cutbacks to firefighters, police, air traffic controllers and food inspects is an out and out lie.

Do you know how much waste and fraud is in the government programs? Here’s some other examples besides what I already posted:

Washington spends $25 billion annually maintaining vacant federal properties.

How about the $200,000 tattoo removal program, $190,000 for the Buffalo Bill Historical Center, and $75,000 for the Totally Teen Zone last year?

How about giving Alaska Airlines $500K to paint a fish on their planes?

The CBO published a budget option series identifying more than $100 billion potential spending cuts. Duplicate programs could be cut (there are over 300 of those).

D.C. will spend $2.5 million training Chinese prostitutes to drink more responsibly on the job. How about the fraud and improper use of government credit cards? We funded purchases for gambling, mortgages, liquor, lingerie, iPods, Xboxes, jewelry, and dating services.

The SEC spent $3.9 million rearranging desks in the D.C. headquarter offices. The Pentagon spent $998,798 shipping 2 19=cent washers for S.C. to TX, and $293,451 sending an 89-cent washer from S.C. to FL.

Congress thank us every day for their popcorn machines, plasma TVs, DVD equipment, air fresheners, camcorders, cameras, car leases, and personalized calendars. Oh, and don’t forget who the FCC sponsored NASCAR to the tune of $350K.

Farm subsidies generally go to commercial farms, not family farms at a rate of $200K a year each. Why do you think family farmers are quitting?

Instead of flying coach, a lot of fed employees upgrade to the tune of $146 million annually…and did you know that Kerry diverted $20 million from the DEFENSE budget for the Edward Kennedy Institute?

During Hurricane Katrina, fraud was rampant ranging from debit cards paying for Caribbean vacations, NFL tickets, champagne, videos, and a sex change operation. Plus, emergency assistance to 900,000 recipients provided false names, addresses, SS# or submitted multiple applications.

Oh, and the Commerce Dept. LOST over 1000 computers since 2001, many containing personal data of we citizens.

Want more? Go to the yearly reports of the departments mentioned to see reality. Why can’t Congress stop the waste and why won’t they start forcing the AG to arrest those guilty of fraud.

BTW, Congressman Tom Price just introduced a bill that would recoup $45 MILLION in UNUSED project or program monies just sitting around in those departments and using those dollars against the debt. It’s worth watching.

I'm just happy it's not 2.4% of the debt : ) - doe (nm)

I've looked at a few sources and the link I'm going to post spells it out better than anything else. The President has stated that health programs, Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, veteran's and other public employees will all be hurt, but I truly think he's just trying to scare people because according to the below link, I really don't think it will happen. Budget To Be Passed (hopefully) Apr 21, 2010
By Walter Alarkon - 04/20/10 08:50 AM ET Senate Democrats have written their budget resolution so they can pass jobs legislation using reconciliation, the controversial process used last month to move healthcare reform. The resolution does not specify what specific jobs measures could be covered, and does not explicitly allow for the use of reconciliation rules to pass energy legislation or the extension of George W. Bush-era tax cuts set to expire at the end of the ...

Balanced Budget Out Of ReachApr 24, 2010
The financial crisis and deep recession have made the long-term fiscal outlook so much worse that many economic experts no longer believe it will be possible, politically or practically, to balance the federal budget. Instead, the best that can be hoped for is to stabilize soaring government debt relative to the size of the economy, these experts say. And even doing that could take a decade or more and require painful tax increases and spending cuts, they add. The budget deficit totaled $1.4 tr ...
