Anti-Gay Republican Outed As Gay

Posted: Apr 29, 2015

A North Dakota lawmaker who has made a name for himself as an anti-gay crusader has been outed by the guy he tried to pick up on the gay dating app Grindr. Rep. Randy Boehning says his secret habit of sending explicit photos of himself to men on Grindr under the username "Top Man!" (not quite "Carlos Danger" but close) would have stayed a secret if pro-gay lawmakers didn't hate him for his votes against gay rights. He suggested instead that this was "payback" by gay people just because of his beliefs. This baseless theory notwithstanding, the man who did out Boehning is just a 21-year-old citizen with no affiliation to the Capitol. He was, however, bothered by the fact that the man he was sexting on Grindr had just voted against offering gay people – the ones that are open about it – legal protections against discrimination. According to North Dakota's The Forum: The exchange came to light when Dustin Smith, a 21-year-old Bismarck man with no known connections to the Capitol, contacted The Forum earlier this month, saying he recognized Boehning from a gay dating smartphone app called Grindr. Chatting under the user name Top Man!, Boehning sent Smith sexually suggestive messages and, in the early morning hours of March 12, an unsolicited photo of his _____, according to exchanges reviewed by The Forum. "How can you discriminate against the person you're trying to pick up?" Smith said in a recent interview. In classic politician form, Boehning initially wouldn't say whether the user was in fact him, but eventually conceded that it was. "That's how things happen on Grindr," Boehning told the paper. "It's a gay chat site. It's not the first thing you do on that site. That's what we do, exchange pics on the site." Boehning's comments somehow manage to miss the point entirely. There is the obvious embarrassment that comes with any politician sending nude photos, but what makes this story unique is that Boehning has been adamant in opposing gay rights legislation. It's hard to imagine he would be quite so sure of his voting record if anti-gay intolerance was something that he faced personally. Passing as straight, Boehning allowed other members of the LGBT community to be harmed by his legislative record from the relative safety of blending in with straight people. Now, Boehning says he is kind of grateful for being outed. "The 1,000-pound gorilla has been lifted," he said. "I have to confront it at some point." That optimism may change when his chickens come home to roost. He may not realize it, but part of confronting his new life as an openly gay man means facing some of the intolerance that he had previously dismissed. Thanks to the votes of his colleagues and him, North Dakota recently shot down a bill that would protect the LGBT community from discrimination at businesses like we saw in Indiana. He had previously voted against similar measures in 2009 and again in 2013 (almost – his colleagues in the Senate killed the bill before he could cast his "no" vote.) Now Boehning is about to discover that his Republican colleagues have made North Dakota not such a great place to be for someone like him. ***** First Bruce Jenner comes out over the weekend as a transgender and a Republican, and now Boehning has been outed as gay by the guy he sent the picture of his _____ to. Times they are a changing.... rapidly. Next the Supreme Court will be ruling in June on marriage equality. Whatever happens, it's always good to see karma in action. Now this Republican hypocrite gets to find out what it's like to live with the discrimination that he himself has voted to allow.;

We need to grow thick skins and soldier on. - But just to remind you,

republicans are not conservatives.

Republicans aren't conservatives? - now hang on a minute

[ In Reply To ..]
Since we only have essentially a 2-party system, the only choice conservatives have is to register as Republican or Independent. In fact, all Tea Party members currently in Congress ran on Republican tickets, are signified with an (R) after their names, and are registered as Republicans. People weren't identifying themselves as a "conservative" until the 2008 election, you never heard that. It was deliberate PR move by Republicans to distance themselves from George W. Bush's unpopularity, much like the comment I'm replying to is trying to distance itself from any affiliation with the gay congressman in this way.

However, the original meaning of the phrases "conservative" and "liberal", going back for centuries, had absolutely nothing to do with values/morals or even economics necessarily; they originally meant either liberal (broad) or conservative (literal) interpretation of the constitution. True old-school Republicans are true conservatives in the original sense of the phrase and there's nothing wrong with that; they wanted to preserve the integrity of literality of Constitution and protect government spending habits by keeping government small.

Again, incorporation of "values" only later became part of the 2008 revival of this term as a PR move by "neoconservatives" to distance themselves from the Bushes, but are actually people that want broader interpretation/change of the constitution to reflect their personal religious values and funding for their own government projects, which is in no way true conservatism.

So I hate to break this historical news to any fragile belief systems reading, but anyone who wants to change current law or constitution to reflect their personal morality, civil rights, religious beliefs, stronger immigration enforcement, etc, is actually a liberal, not a conservative.

e can call ourselves whatever label we like but that won't change the fact that our beliefs actually better fit the opposite definition, according to the original meaning of these words "liberal" and "conservatives", which is why I avoid using them; they've lost their meaning entirely and are PR fluff, nothing more.

No, the moderate republican party is not - conservative. They believe in

[ In Reply To ..]
big government and tax and spend just like the democrats. There are only a few true conservatives like Cruz, vastly outnumbered. The republican establishment hates him.

Whatever names you want to use Whigs, Federalist, I don't care, the party of the Constitution and small government does not exist, just a few representatives left.
I maintain that true conservatives don't want to change existing law and constitution - now hang on a minute
[ In Reply To ..]
Again, pushing individual religious values by changing law to reflect one religious perspective would be changing law and constitution and therefore NOT conservatism, it's still liberalism, and by that definition Cruz fails miserably, he's then a liberal in the original sense of the word. Further, our forefathers protected religious-belief diversity to avoid persecution received in other countries, so I highly doubt they'd support Cruz's efforts to create laws that give us the right to shun others based on varying beliefs.
I know about the true term liberalism, but I use - words that are popular
[ In Reply To ..]
today. Like nationalism has been ruined by the Nazis. Cruz it not pushing something, he is trying to protect it.

I see you changed it from Conservative to Tea Party/GOP - family values. The Tea Party

[ In Reply To ..]
is not represent in the republican party. They are conservatives and are not represented.

Denial....... - sm

[ In Reply To ..]
Tea Party politicians run for office as Republicans and all have the Republican (R) after their name; several of them have already announced they're running to become the Republican nominee for President of the United States, but they're "not represent in the republican party. They are conservatives and are not represented."

Denial is represented, though, as some conservatives definitely are in denial of facts. LOL

Bernie Sanders is an independent running as a - Democrat. There's no denial

[ In Reply To ..]
here. The fact is we only have two parties and the Democrats have been taken over by the far left and the Republicans are what the Democrats used to be plus neutered.
Yes, big time denial. If a person is elected as a Republican, then they're a Republican. - sm
[ In Reply To ..]
The fact is, there are only two parties REPRESENTED IN CONGRESS along with a few Independent candidates (no party). However, there are many, many other parties in our country who run for office. For instance, the 2012 presidential election had the following candidates.

PRESIDENTIAL TICKET -- PARTY
Obama / Biden -- Democratic
Romney / Ryan -- Republican
Johnson / Gray -- Libertarian
Stein / Honkala -- Green
Goode / Clymer -- Constitution
Anderson / Rodriguez -- Justice
Lindsay / Osorio -- Socialism & Liberation

If Ted Cruz and his ilk were actually Independents and belonged to no party at all, you'd be correct, but they're not Independents belonging to no party because they belong to the Republican Party. They ran as Republicans and won their seats as Republicans; that's what that little (R) next to their name means.

Bernie Sanders is an independent running as a Democrat. If he gets the nomination, he'll then be a Democrat. I like Bernie a lot, and I mean it in the nicest way possible when I say that I think Bernie will remain an Independent and not receive the Democratic nomination, but anything's possible.

duplicitous politicians say anything to get elected. But did you know - about Freidrich Willhelm von Steuben?

[ In Reply To ..]
Never surprised at the duplicity of politicians these days, but the hypocrisy really bugs me to be sure. Here's something I learned not long ago that may be of interest to the OP and others.

Did you know that during the American Revolution, Washington hired a former Hessian army general named Fredrich Wilhelm von Steuben as our Continental Army Inspector General, who created the "Regulations for the Order and Discipline of the Troops of the United States" and whipped our sad little undisciplined troops into shape within a year flat and is largely credited with winning Revolutionary War? He later became Chief of Staff for Washington

But the thing was, von Steuben was gay... he had actually been nearly prosecuted and fled to Paris because of it. (**I originally wrote here that he dishonorably discharged from the Hessian Army because of it, but this is not accurate and has been edited. However, his chances for officership were ruined because of it.)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Friedrich_Wilhelm_von_Steuben

Which means, my fellow Americans, Washington didn't care if he was gay or not, he just needed a brilliant inspector army general. It also means that contrary to popular belief, this country was actually founded by all kinds of misfits from societies elsewhere, who perhaps even BECAUSE they were "different", learned a special way of adapting to the world and often led us to innovation and victory.

Though not American, consider also Alan Turing, the brilliant mathmetician and father of artificial intelligence who created the first computer-like machine that decoded "Enigma", the supposedly unbreakable code of the Nazis and it is estimated he saved 14 million lives in doing so. Sadly, after a burglary at his house in 1952, the police instead arrested himself and his partner for "indecency" and he was stripped of all honor and committed suicide, only reinstated by Britain in 2011.

"It's the people no one imagines anything of, who do the things that no one can imagine” (Alan Turing, The Imitation Game, 2014)

I did know about Alan Turing before the movie and what - happened to him was appalling,

[ In Reply To ..]
but not the others. I know gays exist in both parties and some are hypocrites. I don't care if someone is gay. My cousin and I have had many discussion about this, I just don't believe in gay marriage.

Now consider this: If we had religious freedom law, there'd have been no Von Steuben - and we would've lost the Rev. War

[ In Reply To ..]
A jagged little pill for some to to swallow, but true. Because had we not separated church and state after Salem, and had we enacted laws like "religious freedom" law, Von Steuben would've been shunned by our society based on faith reasons for even the suspicion he was gay and thus, he would've never contracted by our military to whip our sad, rag-tag, loosely-formed continental army into shape, and we would've most likely lost the Revolutionary War.
But that also goes both ways. Religious freedom - today, in the case of the
[ In Reply To ..]
Indiana pizza shop. She said she would serve gays but just didn't want to participate in a gay ceremony. That is what Cruz is talking about.
Perhaps if religious freedom law distinguished between participation and service - OP of von steuben comment
[ In Reply To ..]
but such laws don't distinguish between participation and service. And because it doesn't, these law will be abused, despite the supposed "intent." In fact, many shop owners in Indiana were interviewed at the time the law was enacted and they stated openly they felt the new law gave them the right to deny all service to people they even suspected were gay.
I live in Indiana and the majority of the people - here do not feel that way.
[ In Reply To ..]
A customer is a customer. They just don't want to participate in a ceremony. My mother has a jewelry business and half her customers are gay men. That fine. They are customers. No problem. Why would your sexual orientation even come up, unless someone made a point of it.

By the way, that's a good idea I guess between - participation and service. I
[ In Reply To ..]
don't have all the answers and I respect individuals. It just seems like a lot of activists are using issues to push an agenda at the expense of others.

I mean, if someone didn't want to serve me I would just go somewhere else.

I edited the post above, important error fixed - OP of von steuben comment

[ In Reply To ..]
I initially wrote Von Steuben was dishonorably discharged based on the short documentary I recently watched, but that is inaccurate. All other reputable historical accounts state that after facing prosecution for homosexuality in Germany in the Hessian Army, Von Steuben fled to Paris, his chances at officership now ruined because of persistent allegations of homosexuality. A desperate Gen Washington then contracted him to reform and discipline our Continental Army as Inspector Army General. Sorry about that, fixed now

I knew about von Steuben training the troops, - but not the rest. I'm sure

[ In Reply To ..]
there are more stories like this we just don't know about.

Men who have no sexual morals (either party) - probably are lacking

[ In Reply To ..]
in other morals as well. Maybe he should get together with Anthony Weiner sometime.

So since every president from Washington forward had mistresses, were they all amoral in general? - strange logic

[ In Reply To ..]
What someone does sexually is not pertinent to how well they perform their job. Nearly every president we've ever had had several mistresses, also considered by our Judeo-Christian based society to be sexually immoral, but we know them to otherwise be moral people, particularly those so noble as to participate in the birth of this nation.

It is none of my business what they do privately, I assume they are imperfect as humans and not always in the same ways I am imperfect, nor in ways I would necessarily condone.

However, it becomes my business when they misrepresented themselves on a specific "anti" platform to get elected and used that platform to target those with the same sexual predilection the candidate had themselves as some sort of subterfuge distraction. In fact, I consider that behavior more immoral than just being honestly and openly gay from the start.
