An interesting article on the 2nd amendment

Posted: May 20, 2014

I think the key to the 2nd amendment is "well-regulated," though I assume none of us by any means represent a militia.

I also find it interesting that the original included an exception for conscientious objectors:

In fact, the original version passed by the House included a conscientious objector provision. “A well regulated militia,” it explained, “composed of the body of the people, being the best security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed, but no one religiously scrupulous of bearing arms, shall be compelled to render military service in person.”

;

the COMMA is key - the right to bear arms

is predicated on the need for a 'well-regulated' militia.

I am not anti-gun per se, but I don't believe that the founders of the nation expected for ONE new York second that this amendment would be used as a mechanism for arming Americans to the teeth... Remember at the time greedy gun makers were not at the core of this issue - the security of the nation was.

The 2nd amendment is to protect you from the govt, that is why - it's #2, SM

[ In Reply To ..]
#1 of course if freedom of the press, religion, etc. #2 is the right to bear arms to protect you from the govt. #3, #4, etc. in order of importance for the Bill of Rights.

If ANYone thinks for a new york second that - the 2nd amendment

or 'right' to bear arms would protect us from the government, they must be smoking something.

This government is EXPERT in putting down revolt whether violent or verbal. Think about this logically: Does anyone think an individual or even a group of people, even very heavily armed, could 'protect' themselves from this government? Remember Waco.

the amendment originally rose out of the REAL NEED for militias...

Everyone should do research, read the Federalist Papers - and the history of the American Revolution, SM

Also, think about why those in power try to take away guns from citizens (hint, think Germany 1930s).

You can debate about what type of weapons a citizen should legally be allowed to have, but it's not about hunting. It's about protection from the government.
Then where is our "well-regulated militia?" - nm

.
Maybe at one point but I am saying that NOW - there is no way
[ In Reply To ..]
an individual or group of individuals could "ever" protect themselves from the government. If it came to firepower, guess who wins?

Unfortunately, I agree. Think Waco. - The founders actually considrered SM

the right to bear arms a civic right. This means that each citizen would be obligated to arm himself so that if needed he could participate in a well regulated militia. The debate over this began during Reconstruction after the civil war.

I don't believe in militarizing (militia) people, but I do believe in the right to bear arms.
I believe in life, liberty, and self protection, see inside - MT58
[ In Reply To ..]
Sometimes that means having to protect yourself from bad people. That's the way the world really works. There are evil people out there. If there were no guns, the problem would still be there because it's human nature that is the problem. Most people are good, but there is evil in the world.

I love to watch the ID Channel(we call it the kill channel)and all the criminal shows, but if you watch you know what I mean.
I am jost the opposite - I believe in militias
[ In Reply To ..]
that could help the government PROTECT THE LAND in the case of invasion, etc., AND for hunting, true protective measures. But when CAPITALISM got involved It changed that entire picture and now its all about $$ and the FALSE sense of security the marketers use to arm Americans to the teeth.
I think you summed it up nicely - and I totally agree with you.
[ In Reply To ..]
The article places a lot of blame on the NRA, and I tend to agree with that too.
Since the government contracts with firearm companies - for weapons and ammo,
[ In Reply To ..]
then by your argument the government is as flawed as the "evil capitalists."

My brain hurts now. Have a nice day.
Simplistic but false premise causes brain - to hurt?
[ In Reply To ..]
that is a really strange way to twist the content of my post in order to get the 'outcome' you seek. Your premise and your conclusion are false.

no wonder your brain hurts.
On the other hand, I could say you have a - flawed way of thinking.
