on-line wills?

Has anyone ever tried one of these on-line wills, like Legal Zoom.com ?? We've been so negligent about making one, and they are cheaper too than the localyokels -- wonder if there would be any problems executing etc, having been done remotely....

[ In Reply To ..]It really depends on how complicated your finances are. If it is just you and your spouse and everything is going from one to the other, on-line wills are fine.
I used Suze Orman's on-line kit($13.50) when my father was diagnosed with cancer and was told he only had 6 months to live. My mother had died years before, and since everything was going to me, I had my name added to the house, his car, and bank accounts. In my state, if a person dies with only less than $50,000 of personal property (that is only in their name, so anything like a joint house, car, bank accounts, etc do not count), there is just a one page form that needs to be filled out and filed with the court. After he passed away, I filled his Will and the accompanying form with the Court, and that was it. I did not have to go through Probate Court or establish an estate or anything complicated. It was all taken care of in less than a week and I did not need an attorney or have to fill out a gazillion forms. All I needed was the Court stamped form and his Death Certificate to have his name taken off the house, car, and bank accounts, and then there was only my name left as sole owner.
So, depending on your case, you can certainly can do an on-line form now just to be sure you have something in case of an accident or something, and then after you research a little more, you can always do a more formal will later.

[ In Reply To ..]I think states have different procedues, but in my state, if there is no Will, the estate goes to the State and the next of kin or anyone else who thinks they have a claim, have to go through the Probate Court, and it requires laywers and can TAKES FOREVER. I am sure most web sites that offer Wills will have information about what goes on in your state.

Not a fan of Dave Ramsey - Just my opinion
[ In Reply To ..]I watched him for awhile and decided I could not afford to follow his advice. He insists that once you pay off her credit card you should close the credit card account out totally, but he never tells you that when you close out a credit card account, your FICO Score drops. Besides banks etc using FICO Scores to determine if you will get credit and what the interest rate will be, many employers, rental agents, and insurance companies are now checking your FICO score. If you go to get new car insurance, your rate could be higher if you have a low FICO score and they will not ever tell you that. Also, if you go to rent an apartment, they may turn you down or make you pay a higher deposit if your FICO score is low. I can only imagine how many people who have borderline FICO scores got screwed by Dave Ramsey when they closed their credit cards and later tried to get insurance, etc, and found out their FICO score had dropped below the cut off. Once I figured that out, I never really trusted Dave Ramsey again.
Hope your experience following his advice has been good. I just had to add my opinion for a well-rounded view of him. Pros and Cons.

[ In Reply To ..]Way better than a will. No probate. You can do one through legalzoom for about $200 or for about $25 with a book from Nolo Press that's complete with templates. It's legal, it's airtight, you don't need a lawyer, and the estate transfers in months rather than years. Infinitely better than a will.
