Financial Reform

I just thought I would start a contraversial topic before I take off for the day.  I'll be back later to see the ruckus. LOL.

Financial reform...ha...what a joke. - sm

I don't think any politician truly understands the meaning of that or truly has a clue how to do it. Some cuts are gonna have to be made somewhere. Personally...I think we should start cutting foreign aid and politician's salaries and bennies before we start taking money from the poor and the old...but that is just my opinion. Not to mention bringing our troops home. We can still look for high ups in the terrorist ring without actually having so many troops over there. We shouldn't be rebuilding other countries...especially countries whose citizens seem to hate us and want us out of their business. Just my opinion though.

Oh...and we should stop giving money to Brazil to help them drill for oil when we should be drilling for oil here until we can find a feasible and inexpensive alternative fuel source. We cannot get rid of our ugly addiction for oil if there is no alternative no matter how high gas prices are jacked up. Even the electric cars which Obama is pushing for uses oil. How do you think we get electric power? We sure as heck don't get electric power by a bunch of hampsters running in wheels generating power now do we? So when we plug in our cars to charge them......fossil fuels play a huge role in charging our ELECTRIC cars.

Okay, I'll see your cuts and - see message

I agree with you that we should start cutting at least some foreign aid. There are humanitarian causes that I believe we can afford if we can finally get out of Iraq, a war we never should have fought, a war that has cost us so many lives and put our country in debt. I agree that we start with politician's salaries and bennies with the understanding that we'll let better salaries and benefits 'trickle down' to them from us, their bosses, when we have jobs and benefits and can afford to let some of 'our' profits trickle down to them. I certainly, wholeheartedly agree that we do that before we start taking money from the poor and the old. That isn't just your opinion. It's mine too. Our country is great because we care about those who can't care for themselves, the poor, downtrodden, the sick, those who have been economically wiped out by earthquakes, hurricanes, floods, and tornadoes.

I so agree with you that we shouldn't be rebuilding other countries, and I'll add that we should rebuild other countries unless we are willing to let them have a go at rebuilding ours, and that's not going to happen. We HAD to go after Bin Laden. He orchestrated the attack against us. There may be others who attack us and we'll have to go after them, but let's make sure we do only what we have to and not have mission leak into other countries and other wars.

I think we're going to be using oil far into the future. I don't see anything else that is ready to replace it. I've been watching a stock of a company that uses thermal energy and another one that uses energy from waves. Neither one is mature enough to make a measurable difference. It's good that those ideas are out there. Let's explore them, but I think it's oil or nothing for right now, with maybe natural gas. The oil companies don't need subsidies though. They have enough money. They are not a humanitarian cause.

I heard of someone yesterday who make over 100 million every year. We're hearing from many of the wealthy that they have so many tax write-offs that, as Buffet says, his secretary pays more in taxes than he does. There is a huge income inequality or let me say tax inequality that needs to be fixed. Then let's let the IRS agents get out there and collect taxes from people who are cheating. The numbers show that for every $1 dollar in IRS salaries, $10 is collected. That's a whole lot of money (revenue) right there that belongs to us, ready for the taking. We may need to hire more IRS agents if that's the case. JOB CREATION!

From what I understand, there is no way to 'tax cut' or 'tax add' our way out of our budget problems. States have tried it and those states, Texas being one of them "Get that government out of our state; hey government, why aren't you helping us after the wildfire crisis we've been having, you useless government, send us money fast!' But I digress. Some states, Texas being one of them, are in dire conditions right now. Texas and several other states had cut taxes so low that they can't pay their bills. We need calmer heads to find better solutions. Personally, I was making money hand-over-fist when we had the tax policies during Clinton's time. While Clinton wasn't my hero, the fact is, his tax policy worked for me. Bush's tax cuts happened and the economy fell apart. You can't convince me that those tax policies aren't an enormous part of what happened. Do I want to pay more taxes? No, but I sure would if I could get back to the place I was at financially when I almost enjoyed paying those taxes. I made a lot of money! Now, sadly, not so much. I don't have to pay many taxes, which also isn't great as far as revenue for our country and my state, and I also can't buy goods and services that I used to buy.

Not a huge Clinton fan either - sm

[ In Reply To ..]
but I was never a Bush tax cut fan either. I don't think the tax cuts alone brought us down. I think the housing bubble...which started before Bush....had a lot to do with that. You can't force banks to give risky loans to anyone and everyone who wants to buy a house. I think a lot of things have finally caught up with us. The risky loans, the tax cuts, outrageous spending, wars, stimulus packages that didn't stimulate squat, etc. It has all finally caught up with us and I agree that no tax cut and/or hike is gonna get us out of this mess.

I personally blame all politicians through several administrations. I agree that Obama inherited a big ole mess...but it is also my opinion that he hasn't done much that has helped either. We have devalued our dollar, continued wars we shouldn't have started in the first place, and spent money like it grows on trees. Before this major crisis...I don't think either republican or democrat had any desire to actually do what was right by us little people. Now that we are all seriously pi$$ed and keeping a close watch....several are changing their tunes.

I also believe that we haven't seen the end of this. I fear we are headed for another dip in the economy and this could be much worse than the last dip. As much as I hate taking money from the poor and old....we do have a problem with entitlement programs. Too much abusing of the system, etc. I heard the other day that 1 out of 7 people are on food stamps. That is just crazy! We have GOT to do something to help these people so they don't have to receive entitlements....the problem is...I'm not sure how to go about that. We can't just keep giving people money though.

I also agree that these right offs and loopholes that are being used by businesses and the rich need to be stopped immediately....but no politician is gonna tackle that since they too are rich and they don't wanna screw their fellow rich friends and/or campaign contributors. Both political parties are guilty of this as well.
Can't disagree with you, but on one point, GM is going great guns! - Shhhh!
[ In Reply To ..]
Remember when they made all those comments about how the government would tell GM how to build the cars, where to put the batteries, how to design them, and all sorts of ridiculous fears of what would happen if GM took over a car company.

Apparently the government didn't make them redesign anything or do anything outlandish to them. They are hugely successful as they are getting back to hiring people, JOBS!, getting to the point where they will be paying taxes, REVENUE!, and basically just being a successful, healthy American company. That's one small step in the right direction.
Our country desperately needs to make things we can sell, like cars - nm

We need to start making more things here and try and keep our jobs from leaving our country. You can't hardly find anything made in America when you go shopping anymore. It is just sad.
The politicians who sold us on how this is a global economy and we must participate - Blah Blah Blah
[ In Reply To ..]
Those politicians sold us a bill of goods. They have hurt us more than those who got us into unnecessary wars or vote to pay themselves too much money, etc., all put together. They sold us out. I hate to hate, but I HATE lobbyists.
I agree... - sm
[ In Reply To ..]
Totally wish Obama would have kept his promise about no lobbyists. Lobbyists are the bane of our country.
Let's hope that's one of the next things on his To-Do List - sm
[ In Reply To ..]
Hmmm. That would mean of course that he would not be there to get anything done as President next term, because lobbyists = power, and they would not allow him to win. Hmmm, again. I hadn't thought about that. I'm not sure any President will be able to fix that one.
Congress is bought and paid for by lobbyists and wouldn't let him change that system - nm

Financial ReformDec 11, 2009
Thoughts on the bill passed in the House today? Too little, too much? I think it's a good step but there are no guarantees Big Business won't find loopholes. In fact, I'm quite sure they will try. In the meantime, however, it sends a good message that we will be watching.  I'm also sure the senate will take months with this. Will that lead to a watered-down version? I guess it depends on how hard the constituents press their elected officials.  NJ ...

Financial ReformJul 18, 2010
I have been reading articles on what is, and what is not, included in this new law. Not a single article agrees this is real reform.  It still gives Wall Street (SEC) and big banks the freedom to do what they want. This is not good. It's what I've been saying all along.  The idea of financial reform was supposed to stop the abuse, but it may give the above more free rein in what they do.  I'm posting one article from MSNBC. Please be sure to read the ful ...

House Showdown On Financial Reform.Jun 24, 2010
Dylan Ratigan is freaking out of the changes Chris Dodd and Barney Frank are trying to make to this financial reform bill: The long-awaited showdown between banks and Sen. Blanche Lincoln over her derivatives reform section of the Wall Street bill begins Thursday. The conference committee will consider an offer made by the House to amend Senate legislation that forces banks to spin off their swaps desk and separately capitalize that operation, while also bringing the business out into the open, ...

Senate Passes Financial Reform BillMay 21, 2010
Hopefully, when the Senate and House blend the bills, it will truly be good for the country. Only time will tell. I noted that 3/4 of the amendments were not introduced or voted on in the Senate. WASHINGTON - Prodded by national anger at Wall Street, the Senate on Thursday passed the most far-reaching restraints on big banks since the Great Depression. In its broad sweep, the massive bill would touch Wall Street CEOs and first-time homebuyers, high-flying traders and small town lenders. T ...

Financial Reform, Senate Version, Is Now Full Of LoopholesJun 30, 2010
They've gutted the House financial reform bill and Bernie Sanders if furious. It doesn't help the consumer. It doesn't do much more than what was already in place before the bailouts; i.e., why did they even bother? All they did was waste time.  Please see articles below. Senate Passed Financial Reform Bill About An Hour AgoJul 15, 2010
I must go look at it now that it passed. There were stipulations that didn't rein in Wall Street but one article I read stated it does that.   "The Senate passed the financial overhaul package in a final vote Thursday, ending more than a year of wrangling over the shape of the landmark legislation. The focus now shifts to the monumental task of implementing the new regulations over coming weeks and months. The 60 to 39 decision came just before 3 p.m, only a few hours after Democr ...
