Working Thanksgiving -- hosting supper.

Will do pies the night before and cook turkey and let rolls raise as I work. Hopefully work will be scant and will have time to prepare some of the side dishes. Otherwise my daughters will be coming over and helping with that. I am gratefulo for that. I had to use up all my PTO for a surgery last month so working Thanksgiving or not wasn't an option for me. Other people coming will be bringing dishes and they too always can be counted on to come a little early and pitch right in. Many reasons to be thankful. Hope everyone else working has good help too.

Recently hired by an MTSO, but managed to work it out with the recruiter to start the Monday after Thanksgiving. What shift do you have? I'm 9:00 to 5:30 so that would be smack in the middle of dinner prep and sitting down to eat. I looked at the calendar and according to my schedule I will have Christmas eve and Christmas day off. Next year I'll work on Christmas day.....if I'm still alive by then. ;-)

I can't complain....it's a job.

I've done the rolls the day before and I have prepared the stuffing the night before. And we always do a broccoli cheese and rice casserole and I basically put that all together the night before. So all I have to do is pop the pans in the oven the next day and warm the rolls.

Working Holidays Has to be Tough - MTer

It is very sad that anyone in our profession has to work holidays - be it Christmas, Thanksgiving, Labor Day, etc. This is why I only choose to work for companies that specialize in clinical work. They realy stick to a Mon through Friday schedule. On top of that, by avoiding hospital work, you're avoiding a million different dictators. Just my two cents!!

I figured if I'm looking for a M-F schedule this is not the profession for me. There is nothing sad about having to work a holiday. A holiday is a personal choice. Not everyone celebrates x-mas, thanksgiving or other holidays. It is just another day in the year. People get sick and when they get sick they can't help it. When my mom was alive I would fly back home for the holidays (x-mas) and sure enough each time I did she would get sick on the holiday. She couldn't help it and she sure wished she would have spent the time with me instead of in the hospital or ER, but that's the way it is. When people go into the medical profession (including MT work) that is just part of the job. My instructor said if you are dead set against working weekends or holidays then think twice about being an MT. When I worked in a hospital we rotated each holiday. Now that I'm an IC I still work holidays. I don't have a million different dictators and as an adult working a holiday or weekend doesn't bother me. Just part of the job. Plus in these uncertain times I am thankful to have any work I can get. Just my two cents!!

And working holidays from home is a heck a lot better than having to go in and work it. That's the way I look at it when I'm working a holiday.

I do it all from acute care to multispecialty clinic to radiology. I've never been offered less to do clinic than for acute care. Perhaps it's because the employer knows they can toss me into any arena and I can hold my own, but I think more than likely it's just the going rate is the going rate, whether you're doing acute care or clinic work. MQ might be an exception what with the way they tier their MTs, but not all MTSOs do this.

At my current PT position, I was offered a cpl rate, accepted, and then was asked which I preferred to work on, clinic or acute care. There was no difference in the cpl rate.

process they ask where your experience lies. I have also taken tests where there are separate tests one for acute care and one for clinic MTs.

But then again if you have proven skills across the board, i.e. acute, clinic, radiology, etc. then I could see an MT getting a higher cpl in general.

I have been a transcriptionist for 22 plus years and never worked a holiday until Transcend bought Deventure out (the beginning of 2009). My accounts were clinic work and prior to that worked in house and they observed holidays so had holidays off. Needless to say - I have had holidays off for this past year - called unemployment. Happy Thanksgiving to call - regardless if you have to work or not.

I know it's a little early but i'm a planner. What do you usually do at Thanksgiving? This will be new for me as it is now just me and my 10-y/o son. In the past he'd usually go hunting with his dad and I'd cook/bake all day. They'd come home with any "wayward" buddies for dinner. Our OKC homeless shelter has an adjunct service to help take care of pets of homeless people. I frequently donate to that. While the homeless people get their Thanksgiving meal, they need people to volunteer taking care of the pets, feeding them, playing with them, etc. I'm not a people person. All these recipes sound great - but I can't eat them. I have to (want to) get my weight down - haven't baked anything since July, food diary, all that jazz. I can see that people in the medical field are necessary, but I think retail people should not be forced to work on Thanksgiving to increase the big store profits.
